Just thought I would pop in and say Hi, being as my car appeared in some of your RCS galleries it seemed the decent thing to do! It made me feel all warm and tingly inside seeing my car on t'internet My car is the slightly unfinished looking 2 door Ascona; www.retro-rides.com/gallery.asp?issubmitted=displayimage&imageid=3164&folder=72&offset=225RCS was fantastic. Highlights of the show for me were the slammed orange Avenger and Minestrones 1275GT, which was posting some very respectable times for such a subtle looking Mini. As well as the Ascona I have a '79 Mini 1275GT and a 1380cc '97 Mini Cooper. I was slightly disappointed that there were no really quick Opels but I hope to rectify that next year when my car will (should!) be ready for some action. I will post some details and pictures of my cars in the Readers Rides section in good time. Big thanks go to my gf for traveling the 200 odd mile round trip in the back of the 'scona with no rear seats! And to Chris's gf for swapping shifts with him at work so he could go to RCS too. All in all a great day, great cars, and a very diverse selection of machinery on the RR stand.

Welcome to the board.
Out of interest, who built the 1380cc for your Cooper?

The 1380 was originally built by OAP race engines but I've just had to rebuild it last month after the big ends went. While the engine was out I thought it would be rude not to add a straight cut 'box ;-)

Thanks for the Opel love HoTWire, she's a lovely old barge really.
iRocco; Take it you've had bad experiences with MED then? The engine was already in the car when I bought it but as I say it was due a freshen up and it really needed sorting out. I've recently had a Unichip piggy back ECU fitted and had it on the rollers for tuning. It put out 65 BHP at the wheels, which is around 100 at the flywheel. Not a massive amount of power, but if you've had any experience with tuning MPIs you will Know they are not the easiest things in the world to tune. Long duration cams really do not work in the injected Minis. As a result, it runs a fairly mild cam which limits power but it's a real sweety around town, very useable.
I went for a 4-speed box (Jack Knight internals) as I find that it does everything I need. I will soon be changing the final drive though and I may wish that I had gone for the box of 5's then! but they are about twice the price.

No personal experience with MED, just a few guys at my old Mini club had 1380's from them and they kept blowing the head gasket and eatling big ends - one of the engines shot a con rod 65bhp @ the wheels? that's way down on what I thought it'd be - even with MPi ! Not only that, but you're loosing a lot from flywheel to wheels..........35% ? What profile is the cam? Have you ever considered reoving the injection and replacing with carb / throttle boddies? I knew a chap who can 4 Suzuki (1000cc) throttle bodies on an 8 port 1340 - about 130bhp @ wheels. Mine was 104bhp @ wheels and about 120bhp (ish) @ the flywheel - 286 cam, stage 4 head, 45DCOE, high lift rockers.

i ve had stuff from MED and never had anyproblems with it and most of it was secondhand. I always though they were one of the best companies?. my 1380 made 98bhp at the wheels with a gas flowed 1 3/4 SU, 286 cam, and a stage 4 head. if id had lots of money id have gone to Bill Richards racing. I got accepted by him to work at his engine shop for y work placement with uni but i couldnt afford to live in dover, [swerve back onto topic,] Asconas rock!

Racer86; Yep that's the one. I'd been after one for years, ever since I had a Manta GT/E coupe about 8 years ago. When I saw this I phoned IMMEDIATELY, within 5 minutes of the magazine being posted through my door! As it wasn't too far from where I lived I snapped it up. Sorry 'bout that. I was loving your car at RCS by the way. The roof rack is super cool.
iRocco; You would not believe how dissapointed I was with only 65 bhp! The head is an MED jobbie and is one of the thing on my list of future changes. I'm also going to switch to a twin throttle body setup. The cam is a Piper 274i which when you compare the specs is little more than a re-jigged MG Metro profile with slightly more lift. I was looking at changing this too but to be honest, the MOT emissions test is a nightmare as it is! It has to be subjected to the much stricter catalyst emmissions test, and it struggles! It goes a lot better than you would think though, thanks to a nice smooth torque delivery. I can't really do too much with it at the moment as my gf is learning to drive in it. To be honest, the engine is still pretty new and feels quite tight, it seems to be freeing up quite nicely though.
Thanks for all your kind welcomes and comments.
