Dear Mr Ku,
We are currently undertaking a review of out database to ensure continually high levels of quality to our customers. Do you still own the white, Cadillac / Sedan DeVille / 2 axle / rigid body registered A704FRC? If so can you please confirm we have your correct name, address and post code. If any of the vehicle details are incorrect please can you send the V5C back to me personally and I will ensure this is corrected. If you no longer own the vehicle to which this letter relates please fill in the enclosed form and return it in the envelope to me personally. Please do not send details or correspondance about any other vehicle.
Yours sincerely
Some chick at the DVLA, Welshland.
-------------------------------------------------
I find this odd.
On one hand its like the email junk I send out at work to "get customer feedback" and it is vaguely encouraging, but on the other hand it also reminds me of the emails I send out which really mean "oh God we deleted a bunch of records off the database, please help me cover this up!"
ho ho ho.

My Prefect that I sold on for breaking years ago but never changed the logbook, illegally SORNed it for a bit and decided to come clean about it. Phoned them up to say I'd "found" the logbook recently and "received" a SORN thing in the post but I'd "sold" the car some time back. Oh I'm sorry Mr 69 we can't find any record of that vehicle.
Ok Gwendoline, we'll just leave it at that shall we boyo.

Could be someone has seen yours layed up and is trying to clone it or register it in there name?
Maybe worth giving them a call and asking em why they are doing this, found out my mates so called sorn on his car had been messed up by the po and was not sorn, fortunately he had kept receipts, come to think of it that was a yank as well.. STRANGE???

Or it could be a way of using a similar sounding address to get people to send in log books, change them to their own names forging your signature then either cloning the plate or reporting the car stolen.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, it would be a very dim crook who would try to do any funny business cloning such an unusual car. A silver 1.6 litre Ford Focus maybe, but a car which EVERYONE will remember? Not likely.

Why don't you ring the DVLA and ask why you have been sent this, the last thing you want to hear is that due to a lack of response from you, the DVLA have registered your car as scrapped (or something similar)

I've ticked the boxes to say I still own it, my name is spelt right and my address was right and send it back to them. (there was a form with 3 tick boxes and prepaid envelope included) I just wondered if anyone else had one, as it was a bit odd.

Might be worth ringing the DVLA about it - public enquiry line is 0870 240 0009 (I think - that's the number I give out to people, we have an internal direct line ourselves ;D )

"lost" data when it hits the news isn't so much that the data has "gone" from the agency or company, but that an unauthorised 3rd party now may have access to it. [/pedant]

I had my car legally 'stolen' by my ex-wife... the V5 went missing after I moved out in March, she accused me of throwing it away (it was in my name but I let her have the car, I didn't need it and it's on the way out anyway). It was close to retax time but she filled out a 'missing logbook' form, sent it off with the date filled in as when I bought the car, made up something about the previous owner not handing over the logbook and I completely disappeared off their records, it shows she's owned the car since 2007 now. They never wrote to me to confirm it even though i'd already taxed the car once. I don't think anything dodgy is happening to your car, it sounds like a screwup on their part. However my point was it is possible for someone to take posession of your car legally without contact being made.

I give up with the DVLA. I've just tried to apply for a V5 enclosing the new keeper slip, according to the form because I have enclosed this with my application I do not have to pay the £25 fee. So far so good
Today the DVLA have returned the application demanding £25, so they can go forth and multiply as far as i'm concerned.

OT, but what happens if you don't SORN a car when the tax runs out?

OT, but what happens if you don't SORN a car when the tax runs out? They send you a fine for £80 (or, rather, the computer does). In my experience it also does this randomly even if you have scrapped/sold/exported said vehicle, I even had a SORN fine through for a car I had transferred to disabled class and taxed When I looked, I had been sent 2 logbooks, identical details but one plg and one disabled. The disabled one was taxed, but the plg one triggered a fine for not sorning the vehicle. Phoning customer services (If you like music on hold) or visiting a VRO (if you have nothng better to do for half a day) seems to be the only way of sorting it out. £80 is more than 6 months tax on a lot of stuff too. and ignore any reference to SORN in ebay auctions, the SORN must be renewed whenever the keeper changes... send the logbook back on a new project without declaring it SORN and you are going to get a letter back asking for 80 quid.
