I was going to say, meh, make your life easy and stick with the 289 you already have, but hey, looks like you got stuck in with the XJR lump already. Looking forward to seeing this done. Hope the wiring and ecu stuff isn;t too much of a challenge!

part of me likes the original wheels, part of me actually likes the newer wheels. I think for the full Q car image though, the original wheels have to stay.
Nice project though!

Just thinking out loud...could you do as Jaguar did...strip the body off the XJR, shorten the wheelbase and plonk the XJC shell on top just like the guy with the Moggy/Nissan hybrid? I know the amount of work is huge but you would end up with a rust free, stunner more than capable of driving just like the XJR? Good luck either way...look forward to this thread expanding.

i thought about swapping the shells over but i think thats way beyond my level of skill. its going to be challenging enough as it is. after driving the xjr i thought it was a bit smokey and hoped that it was because it had sat for a while but after messing again today and a bit more investigation, plus lots of worrying it could be the dreaded Nikasil problem that would have scrapped the block it appears the head gasket has gone. i hadn't read the ebay listing properly and thought it was a cat c, it isn't it was a cat d so i was all excited i could chuck a couple of doors on, mot it and use it while waiting to strip down the coupe. bit gutted but to change the head gasket obviously you have to strip everything off the top of the engine so if I'm going to all that trouble i may as well drop it straight in the coupe will be easier to make it fit if its stripped down to the block anyway and then do all the servicing to it that needs to be done. starting to get more expensive already. i did really fancey the idea of a q car but having driven the xjr that much power in the old girl on old skinny tires with no abs or traction control in the wet would be dangerous. exciting, but dangerous. i know swmbo wouldnt approve. plus I'm going to try and get the power up a bit more. hopefully 420hp ish. bit more disappointment i thought all these had brembo brakes on but they don't, it was a 2grand extra so this just has standard xj brakes. still going to swap the fornts though if i don't find any cheap brembo's before hand. saw some on ebay the other day for about a fiver and was amazed. wish i'd known this then lol. still deciding on colour. black is always cool on virtually every car but i was also thinking of le mans blue. its a dark blue they used on the xj220. the next step is to pull out the engine, will post some pics of that and start the weldathon. seems silly welding up an old car when the nice new one is rust free and fine started poking the arches the other day and will try and sort out some new panels next couple of weeks, have an expensive holiday coming up though so cant get carried away, am skint as it is.

Don't let it bring you down, it's still going to be an amazing car, it'll just take a litlle longer ... You're not in a rush, are you? Colour-wise; how 'bout white on black wheels? Maybe some nice chrome trim thingies to set the wheels apart...?

ill be honest, white was really on my mind. didn't want to touch the vinyl roof though so werent sure if it'd look daft with white and a black roof. if i could use photoshop i'd have a play but I'm not that clever. the misses keeps saying she'll show me

What a great project! In my head, white with a black vinyl roof will look pretty smart, especially if you refinish those later wheels in satin black too! Might not be the look your going for with it though. Either way, best of luck with the project, it's a cracker

This is shaping up to be one of my favourite projects on here!
Hope you get the head gasket problem sorted out and best of luck with the rest of it.

the cars have vinyl roofs because of the fact that when they were built new Jag couldn't get the distortions out of the pressing for the roof panel. So you may have to live with a vinyl top on this unless you are up to the job of panel beating the roof smooth. Try google, I've seen plenty of these in old english white with a black vinyl roof. You should be able to find a picture. I wouldn't have thought you'd get much advantage cutting and shutting the XJR floorpan into the XJ6. All you risk doing there is reducing the structural integrity of the monocoque. The XJ6 suspension was world leading when new, and is still a good design. Just needs a little adjustment and probably new bushes, UJs and the like to get it back in fine fettle. People drive more power than that on skimpy crossply tyres... I ran 300ish horses in a Chevy powered Vauxhall with the stock 13" wheels on. That was fun. But perfectly drivable. Just keep your foot out of it when you don't want to hoon it. Perfectly safe.

you sir, are a nutter. love it looking around theres not much that will need to be cut, may have to source a few smaller bits and a little modding but nothing major. i was told the old xj6 rear diff is stronger than the new one so will just be freshening everythin up with new stuff. the abs stuff is the biggest headache but i am definately going to bodge it in somehow thanks for your support every one

have been working on my cortina first like i promised which is coming on pretty well, i'll update the old thread soon. and i got my alfa 147 on the ramp the other day, its done 40,000 miles, the cambelt snapped on 18,000 before i brought it, about 4 months ago the engine blew and its took until now for me to have the heart to look at it, it still starts so i thought it might be a rebuild job but when i finally got my head underneath theres a hole in the block the size of my fist. a new engine ordered and more money blown anyway rant over. back to the jag. i saw a few pictures of one on the ppc forum and it was so rusty i had the urge to take mine apart and investigate. thankfully its nowhere near as bad as i feared. the door skins are repairable, thank god, one front wing is mint, one is scrap really. the sills all seem pretty nice, think they may have been done at some point. the bonnet is fine, needs a new front valance and two new sides for the rear valance. needs half a floor in one side. the other side needs really investigating though as it seems someone has welded a new floor panel under the old one engine is almost ready to drop, undone everything but the mounts so will have a go next week probably. keep walking around with my tape measure and its gonna be such a tight squeeze

Look boss, i am working, honest. most of the stuff is now stripped from the car, as you can see engine is out, dash is out with all the heater stuff out, that actually took longer to remove than the engine. i was gonna start stripping the paint off and getting the body straight but i've changed my mind, i no it needs a bit of floor doing and the arches but if I'm going to do it i'll do it properly, I'm going to mock up everything so i know it all fits, cut and chop what needs doing then I'm going to take it surface processing in dudley, have it dipped and stripped and sealed properly to make it last another 30 years. I'm going to paint the whole thing white before i decide whether to refit a vinyl roof. the nice white on the new bmw m3's real shiny like. there's a few more things to strip off the shell before i start stripping the xjr a bit at a time. i might be losing a bit of the workshop I'm in, so i might have to leave the xjr as a full car so its driveable for a bit. i really wanted to swap the whole interior over but a mate quite rightly pointed out that the xjr is a 4 door car so the seats are fixed and not retractable so i wouldn't be able to get in the back gonna keep the original seats now and just get them recovered, wouldn't mind some nice front seats though, ones with the seatbelt built into the side so i can declutter the inside a little bit. the deadline is going to be next summer ish to have it driving and by the end of next year to get it finished, thats roughly 10 hours a week and with a little help it should come along fairly quickly. it would take one hell of a lot longer if i don't have it dipped which is another reason I'm doing it. as long as i can make everything fit it should be alright. can see that statement coming up a few times in the very near future. keep telling myself its going to be fine

I'm having really naughty thought's. as beautiful as this car is, if the roof was a few inches lower...
i could do the chop and get it fitting nice but don't really know enough about it. specifically sorting out the glass and cost's involved. any one done one before or have a bit of info for me costs wise etc...
not much to update really, the car is pretty much stripped now only a few hours to get it down to a rolling shell. found lots more rust, all the rear valances have gone, plus the 2 inner valances at the back so more money's worth of panels. ordered some cheapo shot blast stuff so i can clean all the curse word off the floors. have brought some new floor pans to go in. watching some nice xk8 seats on ebay, silly me forgot that the ones in the xjr don't recline as its a 4 door. duh... xk8 seats have all the electrics in them so should just plug straight into the loom, fingers crossed. need to do all the welding next so my next few updates will consist of lots of panel replacements and pain in the a%$e welding.
