A few weeks ago I stuffed my 1.8 metro and went to using my Polo as a daily, which is a pretty reliable car and I do quite like it. The sensible thing to do would be to keep using the polo as its working fine. So obviously I have done something even more sensible and bought another car with no MOT or tax with the intention of using it as a daily! Its a MK1 Austin Metro L, made in 1984. Its had one lady owner from new (She is now 91!!!) who cried when we were loading it onto the lorry. It has 9200 miles on the clock. Yep, thats not a mis-type, its really 9200 and something miles. Every single MOT is with it and every bill for services. Its been kept in the garage all its life and wiped down when its got wet! There is only one spot of rust and that is on the passenger side wing where there is a small dent caused by someone reversing into it. I have searched and could not find one single peice of rust anywhere on it! I got it home and put a bit of fresh petrol in it and charged the battery. It started after turning over for a few seconds, runs spot on, and its been stood for a year and a half! Only problem is that it doesn't go into any gears. I suspect its got something to do with the hydraulic clutch? Anyway, enough of my babbling, heres the pictures. These do not do it justice, you have to see it in the flesh to really see how good this car is. I mean, just check that headlining out! I wanted to put a nice exhaust on it and get some wellers, but I think I would feel guilty messing with this because its so good! Edd

What a score.
Gotta love an early Metro.
In my experience with minis i'd guess that the clutch plates may be stuck together. Check that the clutch slave is working (or at least trying to work). Then two options really
One involves an open space trolley jack and some luck. Jack up car start in gear, put foot on clutch and bang on the brake pedal as hard as you can (repeat until you hear a bang and the plates separate). The space is just on case it come of the jack in case you where wondering.
and
one is to take it apart and free it that way.
Every mini that I've had that's been stood has been the same and I've freed them all using the former method.
Only guessing though. Good luck with it whatever you decide to do with it mods wise.
The small print,
Note:
I do not accept any responsibility for death, injury or damage of any kind to anything buy using the above method.

If it isn't broken then i'll fix it so it is

That's a great find. At the risk of anorak-ism can I see a mix of Mk1 and Mk2 bits on there?

What an absolute beauty! So good to see a mint one of these early Metro's.... In fact in good to see one at all these days! I don't think adding some nice wheels will ruin it, I wouldn't worry about stuff like that. How about some wide Minilites or Revolutions? Then just wax the hell out of that lovely paint and roll (once you've sorted the clutch obv!)

i think the wheels are mk2, but maybe the later mk1's had them too. The steering wheel looks like a later one too.
For once I'm going to tell you to do exactly the same as i did! wide wheels, low and a big motor! don't touch anything else.

That is truely extraordinary! If you don't mind me asking, how much did it cost? The advert said offers. I offered her £500 and she accepted. I wasn't expecting her to accept it really because she said that there was loads of interest in it and thats all I could afford.

First thing I'd do is waxoyl the living hell out of it, othrwise you'll wake up one morning and find it's dissolved! Then a drop and wellers obviously

What a find, fantastic little car you got there! I'd love one of those, and as for dropping it on wide wheels, YES YES YES!!
I'd be interested to see if the 'above method' works too, maybe a vid would be cool!

Excellent!! This is identical to a metty my grandad had, same year and everything. His one was mint but he scraped it down a wall in wales and wrote it off Grandad was gutted and died not long afterwards! He loved his metro! Id be tempted to say its too good to use as a daily driver, but then what use is it it to you? don't chop it about too much, its a lovely car and ill cry if you matt black it or something! If it were mine id leave it just as it it, stock wheels and all. Take it out on weekends and enjoy that funny gear whine all metros have. Id polish it every day and kiss it goodnight........ but then you need to do what you see fit. Have fun!

I was seriously close to buying a Metro before reverting to type and getting another Cooper. Still wish I had when I see things like this...
