Hey all, I was just reading that you now have to give DVLA proof of engine change when you change engine size or engine number on log book.
before it was only if you went down a tax bracket.
Has anyone done it recently and what did you send in?
Stu.

Yep, you have to provide documentry evidence.
Just tried to change my engine size etc... and got a letter back.
Quote from the recent letter to me from DVLA;
Receipt of purchase from a garage, on headed notepaper confirming the engine number, engine size (CC), fuel type for thre reconditioned or replacement engine, if one has been fitted.
If your existing engine has been converted, written evidence on headed paper from the garage that carried out the work.
An inspection report from a body such as AA or RAC.
An inspection report provided for insurance purposes.
If the change took place before you bought the vehicle, we will accept written confirmation of the change on headed paper from a garage.

Thats a lot of dicking about just to pay them MORE tax! sod that for a game of soldiers. So say I buy a 1.6 engine to put in my 1.4 car off a forum, I have to then pay to get it inspected and someone agree that "yes, that is a 1.6 engine indeed, you aren't insane and wanting to pay the DVLA more money every 6 months for no good reason"
Which bright spark sat in an office on 40 grand a year decided on this?
I can understand having to get inspections to decrease the size, but to increase it? Madness!

I have 2 letters one for the van ad one for the 100e both asking me to send them written reports from the company's that carried out the work (err I wouldn't let a company anywhere near my car for that sort of work I want to know exactly whats been done and that its been done properly ) and they won't change the details till they get what they want so now I have to find somebody who can give a report and say all has been checked and is done properly

This is'nt about smaller/bigger engines , its not about making sure its been done safely , its not about informing the relevent insurance company , NO , This is just another way of bending you over , greasing you up and fecking you over .

I've just changed two engine numbers by filling in the relevant part of the log book, but neither of these involved capacity changes.

This must be a fairly recent change then - I've always just filled in the changes and received a newV5/V5C, no questions asked.

Oh great, just what I was starting to suspect.
My 2.4 doesn't even have an engine number, I suspect it's based on a German police spec omega block.
I can't wait to try and get someone to write a letter confirming that one.
Oh well, Let me know how you get on Mark

It seems daft that this a requirement on tax exempt cars... If it is, it seems a lot of a pain to bother to increase by 300ccs or so. Considering you couldn't tell for sure without removing the heads... I bought the engine secondhand, so I don't have a garage reciept. Which means a garage / the AA etc would have to remove the head to confirm the CC?

Simply re stamp it wit you're original number and keep shtum. Not that I would condone such activities Although I'm now glad I've already changed my 100E as I didn't realise you had to go through all this curse word

Anyway, i just looked on the Direct . Gov website and it states that:
Change to engine and cylinder capacity (engine size)
DVLA will need written evidence of any changes to engine number and cylinder capacity (cc). Written evidence can be:
* a receipt for the replacement engine (highlighted by me) * written evidence from the manufacturer * an inspection report provided for insurance purposes * written confirmation on headed paper from a garage if the change in engine size took place before you bought the vehicle
So, no problem really. I'm sure most people on here are friendly enough to be able to get a receipt from their garage or a breakers for an engine, aren't they?

Just make sure that engine dates from the year it was introduced in case emissions laws get even tougher retrospectively. Also remember that if your chosen engine was still being produced in 1992 and you put that date down your car will most liely then need to meet those emissions requirements. For example, the donor engine for my 142 was used in 1989 and 1992 (for one year only). Both my engines are 1992 models, but my receipt will state they are from 1989 as there's no way my 142 will wear a CAT whilst my still points south.
