Dear DVLA, After discovering the recent rule changes (LINK) to engine conversions it has left me rather confused. The website asks for a reciept for the replacement engine. Does this type of evidence work for installing a larger engine in to thw vehicle or just for the same size? Also would a receipt, the V5 of the donor car and photo evidence of the conversion would be enough? This work is going to be done to a 1992 Nissan Micra (k10) 1200cc 8 valve (MA12). The engine going in is from a 1993 - 1998 Nissan micra (k11) 1300cc 16 valve (CG13). I'm just wondering if this will make it change tax bracket aswell. Yours Sincerely Ryan Langford. CBA to get raped if I don't get it enough and get pulled with a different engine, and cba to not doing it because I don't understand. Lets flood them with emails asking what it all means. also found this quite funny: www.dvla.gov.uk/contactus/customer_complaint_statistics.aspxgood work DLVA you still want to charge more yet your service gets shitter.

People know the police don't open your bonnet and check your engine right? And if they did, they wouldn't know what it was anyway. And the MOT man couldn't care less...

There is a rumour that the day the MOT man WILL HAVE to care is not far away - I've heard that now MOTs are computerised there will eventually be an online check to ensure that any evident modifications have been notified and the car SVA'd (or whatever the SVA is replaced with) if applicable

Bumhats, knew I should have declared the engine swap in the Merc when I first started doing it.... Ah well - not much chance of me getting a receipt for an engine from a car I scrapped quite some years ago now.... lol

I converted my Sierra from petrol automatic to diesel manual about 18 months ago and got the log book changed for engine size and diesel (heavy oil) instead of petrol at first they didn't take the auto of (as log books only state it's an auto never that it's manual) so I wrote a letter to them about this and they sent me another log book without it on.
As I say that was about 18 months ago I wonder how I would get on now.
My garage I use for MOT's did me an engineers report for my insurance company some years ago for a 'modified vehicle' and charged the price of an MOT.

well, I've had a reply, but I'm still waiting for an answer.....
Incidentally, the police can and do open your bonnet, and some of them are very well aquainted with what a valid engine number looks like, and where it is found.

just had this thread pointed out to me by scaryoldcortina, and so rushed home to read it, this is rather worrying for me. I have cars that ive not checked the engine number of, and as ignorance is no excuse under the law, if i find the number is different to the one stated on the log book, presumably, dvla will want to charge me for the privilledge of changing the docs. without any actual change of engine while the cars were in my ownership. yet another erosion of civil liberties and charging the public for the DVLA doing its job.
i despair of this third world country we live in, maybe its time to sell up and move to a country with less grasping and spying government, where i will be a citizen and not a subject to be taxed from cradle to grave

Well Ive had a reply. Thank you for your email. As the engine is not a fixed component of a car, the engine number is not a permanent identification feature. If the engine is changed the registered keeper should notify DVLA Swansea using V5C registration certificate. Please enter the new details in the "Changes" section on your Registration Certificate (V5C). However, before our records can be amended, it will be necessary for you to provide documentary evidence to support the change. This evidence can take the form of: - A receipt of purchase containing cylinder capacity information for the replacement engine Written confirmation from your insurance company. Written confirmation by the manufacturers. If the change took place before you purchased the vehicle, written confirmation from a garage would also be acceptable. The Registration Certificate and documentary evidence should be sent to DVLA. Only original documentation is acceptable and it will be returned after verification. If you do not have a Registration Certificate, please fill-in a form V62* which can be obtained from the Post Office® or for download from the website listed below and return it with your original letter and documentary evidence to DVLA. If, however, you also need a tax disc for the vehicle, you can get one from your nearest DVLA Local Office by filling-in the form V10 (available at the Post Office®), which must be accompanied by the Registration Certificate. DVLA Local Office addresses can be found on our website listed below. Alternatively, to find the nearest Local Office serving your postcode please telephone 0870 243 0444. If the V5C is not available and you are the registered keeper on DVLA records, you can apply to tax your vehicle at any DVLA Local Office using forms V62* and V10.If you are not the registered keeper you need to fill-in and return form V62 to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1DD to obtain a Registration Certificate. Issue of the certificate may take up to 30 working days if the previous keeper has not notified DVLA of the sale of the vehicle. A tax disc cannot be applied for until you receive the V5C in your name. Please ensure your application is supported by the appropriate documentary evidence. Regards Mr C James www.direct.gov.uk/motoringAs you'd expect its a pretty genric reply and only gave me a proper answer to one of my evidence questions. But When i do it ill take plenty of pictures and send them off with my V5 when I come to change it. If they don't accept that then Ill get an engineers report or something.

ooops - yes i have your cortina keys in my pocket
i wasnt thinking of St Kilda, more like southern Ireland, or possibly Orkney
from the DVLA reply it sounds as if i letterheaded ' yes, engine changed to No. *********, capacity ***** will suffice, although when dealing with the DVLA mandarins nothing is as simple as it first appears
