3.45 am knock knock, its the old bill.
are you aware sir that your car is up the road on fire?
no its not its parked outside my house!
sure enough no more than 50 yrds up the road, my maestro is pretending its a bonfire.
turns out some little curse word had nicked it, not learned about steeringlock at chavschool and dumped it on the pavement then torched it.
so i go to have a look at it once the police insist on towing it miles with thier special backhander squad, even tho I'm there with landy and trailer.
so get there and they want 105 quid towing fee, i told them where to shove it and that i would be stripping the car of all the parts i wanted then going... so i did.
i came with a trailer and i look everything i could. not cuz i wanted it, cuz i wanted them to get nothng for weighing it in. drilled out the vin plate etc so then they cant distruct it or anything.
what a bloody con. first some baghead moved it and torched it then the pigs get heavy when i express that i was going to move it there and then. no sir, it has to go to our chosen depot.
then said depot wants 105 bloody quid for mooving it... cheeeek

unless its been involved in an accident you can tell them to stick it up their ![](http://www.wired.com/images_blogs/underwire/2009/11/fox_60.jpg) you can do what you wish moving it wise had a haccident 1/2 mile from home about 10 years ago and the plod wanted to take it to depot 6 miles away they were told not to but they did and they eventually were told to refund the tow charge by the insurance

erm,.. whats a bag head... ? ROFL, glad you asked ;D "Term for a drug user. Possibly originating from the manner in which solvent addicts imbibe glue; they put the substance into a bag then repeatedly breath in and out with the bag over their mouth."

No idea why the rozzers insisted on using their recovery company to shift your car. You should have just taken it there and then!
Bad luck old chap.

Unfortunately removing the vin plate won't stop the police authorised contractors scrapping it. They will in fact have licence to scrap it at anytime they feel like it and the police will back them up. Also there's a £12 a day storage charge on top of the set fee of £105, though this might be waived if you tell them immediately you don't want it back. I have heard various allegations of various forces that alleged some traffic officers might just get a backhander for every car they get removed by the official contractors hence if you break down on a busy road your motor might get removed VERY quickly. Unlikely I know but if the car is still there go back about midnight or 3.00am or something and take the whole car and hide it somewhere. Can't see how they can do you for nicking your own motor! Oh, wear gloves if you do strip it, apparantly there's some nasty carcinogens in molten rubbber etc.

I've had a similar (if not so bad) experience this week too. Some retard tried to steal the Saab on my drive about 10 mins after I parked it up. So they smashed the trim off the steering column and pulled out all the wires.... which are about 4 foot from the actual ignition barrel. Moron. Anyway, the police turned up, and were very excited that there might be some backward, inbred DNA in there or something, so arranged for it to be towed away to 'preserve' the evidence. When I asked when they would be bringing it back they pretty much laughed in my face. No, that's too easy, I've got to pick it up from a compound on the other side of town, during work hours.... without working indicators or wipers.
And they didn't find any yog or anything.
