So, in my ever ongoing hunt for new wheels I couldn;t help but notice a few Porsche 944's apperaing at prices well under the £1000 mark. Some even had MOT too! Now don't get me wrong, I won't be buying one as the wife isn't willing to let me remove the legs of our two children. Still, I couldn't help but wonder if these 'bargain' Porsches are any good, or if they should be avoided like the plague. And yes, I know James Mays example in topgear was a fruit, but lets face it, they would have bought it with 'entertainment' firmly in mind. So, cheap Porsches, discuss...and have some pics..... 944 and even 924 Turbo are up there on the strokeability scale! Proper weapon and true winner in the underdog story of the Porsche world.
I'm sure the kids won't be too pi$$ed at being devoid of limb below the knee if you get to ferry them around in one of these?
Far nicer on Fuch's than when people stick Cups on (IMO)

Is this a question you have to ask?
I have always had a sneaking desire for a Mad Max rally car, almost Baja bug-esque take on one of these. Raised, matt black, offroad tyres, wire mesh, I'm sure you know where I'm going. I think grafting a Quattro drivetrain in one would be beyond me and anyway I know I'll never do it but since it's a weapon it might as well be a dangerous looking one.

i think they can look pretty awesome, and lots of dub boys r happy enough to run around pretending they have porsche's by using doorhandles*, so i would say this is defo a real porsche!
also whats with carstuckgirls? thats the weirdest thing ive seen in ages
don't shoot me down I'm only joking porsche handles do look proper trick!

944? i found it dull  no engine noise like a 911 sadly. we accelerated at a fantastic fashion but i felt something was missing, something was feeling too disengaged from enjoyment, i was very disappointed  |

Deffo weapons. 944 turbo is in the dream list of cars to have. Along similar lines have a real hankering after a 968 Clubsport - i need one of those in my life. I would like to get a Porsche 924 and literally put an LT van engine in it, the non-turbo 2.4 diesel perhaps. That'd really annoy them.  I think 924s and 944s pretty desirable, more so to me than 911s. |

I bought a 944 S2 a couple of months ago and I love it. It's the later 3.0 with turbo brakes and suspension but all are quick and handle well.
There's a proper sense of build quality about it and I'm amazed everytime I work on it how well thought out and put together everything is. There are a few things to watch out for (corroded fuel lines, cambelt change, sticking brakes, rusty sills and a few more) but if you choose carefully and get a good one then they're reliable.
I would definitely say that buying a cheap one is a false economy, some parts prices are quite amazing and because things are well made there's a good chance it'll still be on original parts which are reaching the end of their life. Make sure the one you buy has been treated as a classic porsche and not as a cheap sportscar - it's the difference between bodging things rather than fixing them properly.
I looked at ones which were £3k + and you'd have easily spent the same again within 6 months. A sub 1k 944 is going to be very expensive - think of that 1k as the deposit followed buy large and unexpected installments to the porsche parts man.
Worth taking the car to a proper specialist before buying - there are quite a few around.

I had a 944 and it was great, gave £1600 for it with loads of history on a private plate (was a D-reg) was a trade in at a porsche garage.Ran it everyday and it never caused any problems!!
