924s/944s arnt hard to live with. 2k should get you a good 924S, 3.5k a 944. I plumped for the 924S as personally prefer the look.
If looked after in the same way as any 20 year old car your on to a winner.
You can get 4 adults in them (admitidly we're talking my GF at 4'11" and Mum at 5'3") Its down to the size of their feet over anything else!
If you do look into getting one, make sure a cambelts been done within 20k.
As for Porsche snobbery, at the end of the day without these cars (more so the 924) its highly unlikely Porsche would be in existance today.

I certainly have no problem seeing 944s as 'real' Porsches, though I know there is an established, elitist school of thought which says that the only reason Porsche many anything other than a 911 was for paupers (!!) who couldn't afford a 911.

We have run a 944 S2 as a daily driver for 4 or 5 years. Despite the current low prices depreciation has been very low. Only a couple of unexpectedly large bills so still cheaper to run than a modern fiesta and a million times more fun. As has been said before, look out for poorly maintained examples, and despite the galvanised panels they can and do rust. Regarding values, ours is a 1989 model. List price £30,000, plus £1000 for the electric sunroof. That is the same as our first house cost in 1989, so not so cheap!

Well I loved my 924 bargain car, decent(ish) power and handled excellently, obviously could do with more poke which is where the 924S / 944 comes in.
As I always mention, people spend more money on a rotten Capri, wonder why it's dog slow and hunts out the ditches and wouldn't get a 924/44 as they're not 'proper Porsches'. Neither is a Capri?!
One day I will get a 944, ideally Turbo and just enjoy it. And yes I found having a Porsche badge on the front did make me feel better, so maybe I'm shallow!

damn, could have made you all cry if I'd taken pics of the two I found in my local scrapyard at the weekend LOL. But yeah, ever since I was a little girl I've lusted after the 944's - out of all my matchbox cars they were my favourites (yeah I was a wierd little girl, I wasn't much into dolls but had a huge collection of matchbox/majorette/corgi etc toy cars (ahem, still do! but I gave away a few to topghia, and one of my green mercs to a certain collector of green mercs LOL) I think I liked the fact that with the hidden headlights they didn't resemble frogs like all the other porsches LOL (hey, c'mon, I was only about 4 at the time!) I'd have one tomorrow if i had the space to put one. I've always liked the boxy shape better then the 911. Mind you i wouldn't pass put a 911 of the 80's either. There is a 924 thats been sitting in the street neara mates place, if i come up for sale and it's real cheap i'll get it back on the road.

Weapon of choice I say. Sneered at by a lot of 911 owners I'm told for 'not being a proper Porsche' but I reckon the shape of the 944 is lovely and they're a decent car, especially for the money they're at right now.

If you can't afford to buy a Porsche twice, then don't buy it at all.
I say.
