Popped up on Pistonheads today: "Pay-as-you-drive road taxes are being trialled by the Government, it has been reported. Several pilots are understood to be taking place across Britain and cars have been fitted with black boxes on their dashboard which can be tracked by satellites. This means their exact movements can be tracked and the Department of Transport is apparently appointing companies to carry out the schemes.
Members of the public will be asked to take part in the trials which could take place at some point between now and 2010. It is thought that the pilots would be carried out in about ten parts of the country.
The trials will mostly consist of a satellite tracking a vehicle's movements and motorists will then receive a monthly or weekly bill which will vary depending on when and where they drove. Around 100 people in each area will voluntarily sign up to the scheme and report back their experiences.
Labour has come under severe criticism for its plans to overhaul road tax and the Tories have warned that the 'spy in the sky' projects are will pave the way for a national road pricing programme.
Theresa Villiers, the shadow Transport Secretary, said: 'It seems that Labour's unpopular plans for a national road pricing scheme are alive and well. They are determined to press ahead with their untried and untested spy-in-the-sky national project even though it looks like an IT disaster waiting to happen. Ruth Kelly should start listening to drivers and scrap these pilots for a national road pricing scheme that is unnecessary and unwanted.'

Wouldn't worry about it, not wanting to bring politics to retro rides (now there's a horrible thought), but labour won't be in power long enough to implement a re-decoration of chequers, let alone road pricing schemes.

yet less than a month ago there was a piece in several of the newspapers that "pay as you drive" schemes were being scrapped, all the privately run ones such as the two or three insurance company ones were total failures.
As said the technology is very expensive and most of the scare stories are based on some "back of a fag packet" estimates done by Radio 4 a few years ago based on a few hunches and guesses.
What *is* happening though is that most cities have been given a green light to introduce London-style congestion charging and several of these are going into pilot soon. Nottingham's will be one of the first with Manchester following shortly after. They've published the proposed zones and charges already.

Erm, the first road pricing trails were carried out under the former conservative adminstration back in 1995. Party politics is nothing between the two of them on issues like this.

It's the whole " Big Brother " aspect of this which concerns me.
It's bad enough know that your details are on countless databases both private and government but to have " them " able to track your every move is just a step to far IMHO and is the begining of the end for personal transportation.
How long before the black boxes control your speed, route and even your ability to even start the car and drive somewhere without pre-approved route planning, risk assesment or whatever else 'they' dream up.
And if the "green lobby" ever get hold of it then God help us all.

don't you think you sound a little paranoid?
The security forces can already track your every move from your mobile phone, as well as being able to use it as a covert listening device. The mic is always on, and they don't even need to know the IMEI or phone number to activate it....
Every email you send or recieve, every web page you go to and (astoundingly in full detail) every Google search you do is stored and indexed. In fact Google store all thiers perpetually.
Every credit card transaction is logged and recorded, what you bought and where you bought it.
etc etc etc
We live in a society where there is already so much information stored about every individual that any scheme that adds to it simply makes it a bigger job for "the Iluminati" or "the Jewish Conspiricy" or whatever cack you care to believe in to actually search through it all.
All I'm bothered about is "will this cost me money".
The local congestion charge scheme will cost me £7.80 a day by 2011. Now that I know I do not want.

It would be easy to be a member of the opposing party. All you have to do is make weak criticisms of the government in power constantly.

I know this already, it just got a little lost in my rant. - sorry. The point I was trying to make was it's just a little further up from the thin end if the wedge. The wedge that is trying , step by step, to drive us off the roads by making it so awkward/expensive, that only the priveliged few ( including MP's ) will be entitled/be able to afford to use cars. Maybe I am a little paranoid, but not without reason I think. If I had no ties in this country, believe me I would have left a long time ago, but with my own small buisness to run and 2 young kids, whom I couldn't bear to leave behind, it isn't feasible ATM, so I guess i'll just have to moan about and carry on as usual !! The thing is tho, I can see a very real possibility that my kids will never know the freedom that is picking up the keys, to whatever car you have, getting in and just 'going for a drive' purely for the sake of it. And that makes me sad !

as far as the black box is concerned, a plus side is that you wouldnt need to shell out for a tracker on your beloved retro! the gov will know where the traveller thief has taken it and will therefore deploy the police to go and arrest the perp! could be worse, they could start installing cameras inside your car like the insurance companies in usa do for people who want to lower their premium

theres always a workaround with these systems. just like clone plates to avoid congestion charges
When it happens (not if) I will be out with my trusty soldering iron and mounting my black box on the local milk float ... while I breeze off in my car as far as I want
On another note there's thousands of drivers willingly allowing themselves to be tracked and are buying the equipment themselves saving the government a lot of money!
SAT NAV lol

I am not entirely convinced that this story has any basis in fact. The cost of the technology is such that, having developed it, you wouldn't trial it, you would just implement and deal with the bugs as you go.
The other thing to remember is that what the opposition say they will do and what they actually do when they get in will be two markedly different things. When they had the bye-election in Crewe shortly after Labour had binned the lower tax rate, that curse word Cameron was there and someone asked him if he would reinstate the lower rate if and when he got into power. The answer was along the lines of "Erm, well, we would need to consider blah blah, financial climate waffle, may be other ways etc." None of that constituted a yes.
