I'm not too bothered. Anything that can be made by people can be taken apart by people. By this I mean ' We'll see how long their little black box lasts I've been at it for an hour with a 20 lb sledge hammer at which point it gets lobbed in the Bridgewater for wasting my time' The congestion charge in Manchester boils my curse word. Will public transport get better? Will it curse word. It'll get more expensive, that's about all that will change. Will they lower road tax? Will they curse word. Has any of the studies, feasability plans and referendums been carried out in a democratic way? MY IT HAS. Note to the government: An 81% 'no' vote is a pretty curse word large majority. It means your stupid farce of 'listening to what people want' isn't needed, wanted or will be tolerated, and so therefore can disappear up the nearest fat bureaucrat's for ever and ever, AMEN. What gives them the right to implement something no-one wants? How is that fair? I really would love to see the 'backlash' that Edmund King extols the virtues of. I'm off to work in a call centre in India, because that's about the most British thing we have left.

theres always a workaround with these systems. just like clone plates to avoid congestion charges When it happens (not if) I will be out with my trusty soldering iron and mounting my black box on the local milk float ... while I breeze off in my car as far as I want On another note there's thousands of drivers willingly allowing themselves to be tracked and are buying the equipment themselves saving the government a lot of money! SAT NAV lol Sorry, I must be missing something... can you explain how my sat nav 'knows' what car it's in, and who's driving??? at the moment it doesn't ....but your half way there With a small amout of rom programming ,the box registered to your car, which makes you liable for the road tax whoever is driving, and your £100 ish navman for the sat comms times x amount of cars on uk roads = £millions just like a registered mobile phone in simpler terms....got it ?

People get the Governments they deserve goes the old adage... Me? Well, I've never voted in my life, as I consider democracy to be a crock of $hite in the first place...it's not apathy.. if that's the first thought that comes to mind. I'm all for small Government at the end of the day. Congestion charges in City centres? - Don't go into the city - let the ba$tard place die off and make them develop it into something more useable instead. Road pricing? Buy a car registered from another Euro state and drive that on UK roads.. As for all of these data bases - the powers that be are usually so inept and inefficient they probably couldn't track you down unless there was a 3 month period for something you require the next day. It's all logged down somewhere but not of a great deal of use I wager. Having travelled around the world for half my life, I do find the UK "Management" to be laughable at best

Yes, I agree about the concern over black boxes. Really don't like the Big Brother implications of this.
However, I do think that pay as you drive is a good idea. So those of us who use the roads less pay less etc. Not sure how it could be done, other than a tachometer style thingy that gets checked on every MoT...

I hope they are going to Scap the current road tax scheme then?
I thought the Nottingham Congestion charge was axed for now due to the local councils not liking the idea?

Well it doesn't really bother me actually..
Like some others pointed out, there is so much information being collected that the potentially usefull information is lost between all the curse word.
I heard on the radio London has 5.000.000 CCTV cameras, and Amsterdam only has 3500, but they are far more strategically placed and there is actually someone watching them now and then, and thus they have a lot more effect for a lot less money.

Re the satnav.... a satnav RECEIVES signals, but has no transmit capability, so it doesnt matter if its registered to a car or owner, there is no way to track it without adding on a way for it to transmit its location, or for it to log its movements to be downloaded at set intervals. Both ideas are unfeasable.
Anyway, the ANPR system already knows where your car is, so there is no point worrying about black boxes.

Thing is...the EU (mainland) in general has a lesser ar$ehole element than the UK... generally speaking - probably by the same ratio of cameras installed in London vs Amsterdam ;D

SAT NAV lol I dunno how many times ive tried to explain to people that sat navs only know where they are, they cant tell anyone else unless they look at the screen, it works out where it is by picking up signals constantly broadcast by different satellites and calculates its postion from the time differences between them, it has no way of transmiting that info to anyone.

I see... so where do I take my sat nav for this "small amount of rom programming"... or do they come to me?? As the registered keeper, I'm liable for the road tax on my car "whoever is driving" now... As I said I must be missing something...

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

On the one hand, an old friend of mine is very fond of telling me that "Just because you're paranoid, it doesn't mean the bastards aren't out to get you."
On the other hand, if all these databases are recording every single little thing we do, where is all this information held and where is the army of people who monitor it all to catch us at it?

Not sure how it could be done, other than a tachometer style thingy that gets checked on every MoT... Now that is a VERY good point. every time you MoT your car they record the mileage, (now completely computerized) and every time you change keepers the DVLA ask for the mileage (although its optional to provide at the moment). The stated reason for this is to combat mileage fraud, Ie clocking. hardly an issue on my probably been round twice already cortina, but big concern for nearly new cars. So, why check the old stuff? Let's face it, they know how many miles a year we do already, and could very easily tax on that basis if they wanted to, especially as modern cars have *very* tamperproof odometers now. So, why bother with the whole big brother black box gubbins in the first place. I don't know. I don't care. Suspect they are too caught up in the whole techy fantasy thing (govt and theorists alike) to notice a simple solution (like, say, putting it all on fuel?). Nah. Its got to be complicated.

Well what I would like to know is, if I am gonna have a black box, who will pay for it? Also, with retros having few or no microchips to track, how easy will it be? They have cable speedos too, so no signal to detect and convert to mileage and therefore a price. I's already been mentioned satnav can't send, so I assume these black boxes will be more complicated, so that = more expensive. I still object to the price of satnav, even though they have got cheaper, so sod paying a couple of hundred to pay the gov for the miles I travel! Aside from this, does anybody really think it will save them any money? If so, I suggest they take a taxi back to reality.......

In reality the payment for the "black box" is only the tip of the iceberg, you will also be paying for the trials, the installation, the maintenance of the system, the wages of the operators, the list is endless...short answer is that you will be paying for it at the end of the day. (along with quite a few other people I should add)
