i placed the engine and box in the place i wanted abit higher than the diff flange for the rear of the gearbox,,,and the bellhousinging 3/4" away from the new subframe crossmemember should suffice ,,the cylinder head on the offside is 1/2 " away from the bulkhead i'm happy with the engine being totally level in the bay the engine block brackets on both sides needed chopping shorter rather than just the one as i thought before then they were fitted to the mock block along with some new cotton reel mounts to see how close the rails were,,,,,,i liked the result then some little angle brackets that bolt onto the rails were made and fitted then i looked at the rear crossmemebr for the gearbox and it was completely wrong so that got popped off,,,i just wanted a crossmember that mounted of the origional holes,,,,but was lower and further back than stock i seen disabled gaurd rail was very beefy steel indeed so i wipped that off the wall and chopped it along with some brackets the brakets were shaped and drilled to fit like this style compared to origional it fitted up fine and just need some cotton muonts seats to fit properly

I made some brackets for the crossmember to support the gearbox rubber mounts and welded them on,,,,,,,,i had to move them sideways later as I didnt measure properly initialy and some strengthening fillets were added to stop them bending down the gearbox needed its m8 mounting holes drilled out and tapped at m10 size for the rubber mounts I found (volvo 340 engine mounts lol)

Stonking work fella - a great write up too...... I may be begging a look-see when I get over in October. What'll you do brake-wise? There is a conversion for Sierra vented I think - need to go dig out old links and contacts.

indeed the brakes was a stumbling block initially but i heard from a member of the dolomite club that golf mk2 gti brake disks and sierra sliding callipers will fit under 13" wheels i reckon i'll get the golf vented and grooved disks,,,but get some sierra cosworth 4 pot calipers as good brakes are a must the rear drums as they stand are probably more than man enough for the performance but i'll look at a rear disk conversion for the future
and indeed your more than welcome to take a look at project 'dolly v to the 8',,,,i shall attempt dig out the kettle/ tunnocks tea cakes and those crazy square battenburg cakes etc haha

i have recently been working on the sump to clear the steering rack and subframe crossmembers,,the standard Range Rover sump has the bowl taking up the rear half of the sump,,this is exactly where the afformentioned element of the car get in its way,,,on the dolomite it needs to be a fairly compact front bowl sump first job was to hacksaw the sump up then the front half of the bowl was welded further forward and a new rear wall was welded to its rear then the rear of the bowl was chopped down and rewelded at a much reduced height (the slit was cut as it had gone banana shaped due to the patchwork style of it,,,so had to be bolted down and rewelded) the old drain hole was plugged with one of these handy items then a subtle coat of paint seen soon action over it

recent activity has seen the oil pickup pipe modified to suite the front bowl layout of the sump,and some rustic brackets where made to prevent the thing cracking the setup was mounted then tested by trying to wobble it,,and it felt rigid enough,,so the sump was bolted on I don't normaly bother with painting bits for looks,,but its a mint order engine so its not a waste of time imo so I pulled out some early v8 rocker covers,,poured some nitromors on them,,,made a massive mess first time round lol,,these had 4 layers of paint the gloop did what it said it would,,remove paint when rinsed with water and irritate skin badly then abit of black spray found its way on and some sanding action to the raised parts the inlet manifold had its top hacksawed off too with a fine tooth blade,,never again ,,however what to do next is a mystery for now

i havnt been happy with the offside mounting rail on the subframe as the downpipe would have no where to go due to the side of the block being hemmed in by the starter motor steering column engine mount and its rail so the rear part of the rail was cut away ,,the little section cut out reappears later the downpipe can now exit down between the rail end and the crossmember that little section chopped out was welded to the lower subframe rail to spread the load of the T section bar that was going between the upper and lower rail this T bar was chopped to length and its end modified to fit the upper rail then it was welded in postion (may do the other side for symetry) i also made a start cutting down the propshaft i'm hoping to go for a 2 piece item of similar layout to the original one i used a jubilee clip to mark out the cut,,,really a piston ring compressor would have been a better bet but its only the mock up stage before i find a lathe to properly square it up on getting the top hat ends out of th waste shaft is much more of a faff as you cant just cut straight through,,more like saw around the perifery untill its weak enough to snap out ive only looked at the intermediate shaft but it'll be about 20" shorter and the other shaft about 9" shorter once looked done

well its now been 2 weeks since the mot and ive been smoking about in the 3500HL as a daily throughly enjoying it a few things that are abit annoying are the carburettors being old and decrepid so the engine sometimes stumbles and miss's and the propshaft company phased the center UV joint's 90degree's to each other for some reason and it mildly vibrates under power (smooth off it) engine in and plumbed in left interior as standard as i like it,,and its more sleeper rear disk conversion so as to make it easier to find service parts and make it easier to keep adjusted afformentioned prop popped the clutch master cylinder inside the car welding gas bottle with brasso top sufficed as a cheap remote reservior starter required a remote mounted solenoid to clear the steering rack now looks like this battery to boot for space issues

Not seen this one before, fantastic project!
Quick question, is that one of those XJ6/Sherpa gear lever housings on the back of your LT77?
Nice work, especially like the two pence piece welded into the sump!!

aye the bonnet does shut,,i think i may have opened it on the move before picturing it to see if it made a difference to the running temp (none as it happens haha) the gearbox is a sherpa one,,but the remote is a cut down sherpa item with a rose joint and turned gearlever which makes selection quite hard as its both quite shortshift and has no spring bias or detents yet haha the back section of the prop seems right but its the center uvj to the gearbox one thats oddly phased ,,it may be fine tbh as it only vibrates very slightly at low speed indeedly the carbs need thrown in the nearest bin as they are off a 150'000 mile disco and are pants I seen you down there qwerty (<<just realised how easy that is to type in) but indeed i couldnt get away for the interest it generated ,like someone randomly gave me a large sheet of titanium that he had lying in his boot! may even make some fancy ott titanium brakets ,,for the cig lighter or something similarly minor haha

been a while updating progress on the tatty machine,,so far done 4500miles in it doing the run to work and its been continuously reliable,,save for a reused coil that i replaced with a decent one of a jag xj6 yesterday and the fuel pump refitted low down in the boot anyhow recent additions was a weber 40 dfi on the manifold i chopped down with some shoestring drilled out jets untill it felt right on the move does exactly 29.4mpg if driving carefully well to see what this unknown engine can do (standard heads,early 10A block etc) i took it down to PDTuning at boldon for a rolling road session ;D also has a joke of an exhaust with no flow capability,,,2.22" primary stepping down to 1.75,back to 2" mitre joint bends throughout and a single none straight through silencer i was expecting 120bhp and 180lb/ft peak due to the exhaust,,but the results show that there is a wall that the engine hits at 5000 which it wont go past lol transmission absorbed most of this tho with 115bhp at the wheels which i think is mainly the propshafts fault due to vibrating,,AFR shows some excessive richness at the bottom of the power run but should be better suited once a half decent exhaust is fitted up

Blimey, 151.6! That's pretty good!
Stock SD1 is 155, I believe? That's pretty stout for an essentially standard(?) but rebuild motor! Dread to think what feeble figures my tired old RV8 would rumble up, if it ever starts again....!
