ive had some time off work for a change so i decided to improve some area's of the car that have been lacking since going on the road namely a small leak from the axle ,,and takeoff shudder/vibration from the propshaft i tackled the propshaft by setting up the U.J. running angles by way of a new gearbox crossmember and relocating the center bearing up first task tho was to clear away the snow of the drive then set the centerbearing up over with spacers to set the rear prop section correctly(embarasingly it was running 6 degrees at the CB and 0.5 at the rear axle) then it was a case of removing the rubbish Xmember i made before and replicate with much stiffer mount bush's and using a tape measure this time to work out where to drill and once fitted i could shim the gearbox up to set the font prop running angle next job was concerned with whipping off the diff cover and both checking the condition of the planet gears,,,and sealing the gasket properly test drive seems to have revealed less power getting wasted by the prop,,,and for the first time total smoothness

well the 3100/3000xpack capri carb wasnt really giving much excitement in the throttle response, higher revrange or fuel economy stakes i was getting up to 30mpg on it,,but only if you kept the momentum up so now it runs via vintage lucas 'L' efi which has been very hard to find quickly but a worthy improvement over carbs bought the above stuff from a breaker for 100 quid,,note the incorect afm thrown in the box and the usual chopped wiring carry on that breakers do a week later i found a full system minus afm for 30 on ebay ,then the good RR chap 'Carlos' sent me an incredibly well packaged afm for silly cheap ,,many thanks that fellow ;D i then jet washed the alloy bits and painted them black it initially ran on 5 then after 30mins settled on 7 ,swapping the ecu made no difference so after locating the dead cylinder by touching the exhaust manifold and feeling for changes in temp ,,i found it on the first branch which was warm,,,next one was like getting a knife into the finger heat wise which proved that method to work,,but not be practical swaping the injector in seen it running on 8 this seems to have released the top end of the rev range and added torque all over the shop ftw camshafts next once i can work out what one will add to the midrange pull without a daft shaky idle

Good work as ever Ronaldo . At least you're out there doing it rather than just yapping about it on here....

Also with the fuel economy in mind i added a gauge panel to the place where the radio would normaly fit the important gauge being the manifold vac gauge which i can quickly check to see i havnt let the throttle become applied more than needed for cruising speeds,,the others to balance the setup are oil pressure (nice healthy 25psi at hot idle) and oil temp sitting around 60 degrees i520.photobucket.com/albums/w327/jikovron/SDC10914.jpg[/img]the origional sender required the bellow part removed and the base drilled and tapped for a bspf fitting to the gauge feed it was sheer chance that the only tap i had was suited to the fitting provided ,one thing i did do tho was drill slightly into the bronze sponge so the gauge isnt fast reacting,,i will need to remove that part i made the holder basically without measuring the length of the heater outlet ,,hence the overhange and wrapping the tabs around the corner next on the list,,,the sump gasket as the board placed under it is gradually getting saturated with 20w/50 above carry on was done last month but more lately i decided to sort it out due to a few little niggles annoying me these being a screeching clutch,,leaking core plugs,,starter not engaging easily,,the massive oil leak,,waterpump failing spectacularly and the lack of a dipstick (oil leak possibly being due to overfilling haha) so engine out: bunk bed ladders AKA engine crane ,,hiding behind this engine is a 3.9 waiting to go in ,,just waiting on royal mail to open the sorting office so i can collect it all reason for removing was leaking core plugs,,and a clutch spigot bearing screaching embarrasingly due to making it slightly too oversize i ordered this rad last year from advanced radiators in lemington newcastle,,80mm core all for 170quid ,,big money spending for me but the car is hopefully a keeper so the low running temps FTW also picked up a scimitar axle for some LSD fitting win however i note this one is 57" wide so about 4" more than the sprint axle i shall search for a narrower scim axle pictured next to a dolomite 1500 axle,,,one of these should be up to the task i hope

the 3.9 engine seems to be turning into a money pit by virtue of a full rebuild so for the moment i shall fix the 3500 as its in top health and very clean inside i took all the parts off that oil was escaping out of, that being the timing cover and sump gasket in the main and noted the cam has done the usual rover v8 thing of wearing lobes away, i read this is exacerbated by more modern oil lacking in zinc and phosphourous and i guess its why porting the head made little difference also of note was the timing chain had stretched to comical levels this shows a inlet lobe in reasonable condition with 10mm lift or so this is one of 3 affected lobes which had virtually dissapeared down to 2mm lift it can be noted the tappets ranged from unworn through being slightly dished to being deeply convex

That engine's going to be transformed when you put it back together with a fresh cam/lifters/chain and have it all timed up on the button. Look forward to seeing the results!

yeah i'm hoping it feels much more 'fresh' and smooth running for sure latest shenanigans are centered around the gearbox which in this case is a lt77 G suffix with ldv R-150 ratios, these are awfull tbh on a 3.45:1 final drive and sd1 gearbox's are all both weaker and older than this one so the idea is to use the gears and layshaft from a 4x4 and combine them with the rwd mainshaft and casing what may scupper this is if the input shaft/layshaft stepdown gears are different sizes between 4wd/rwd as i'm hoping to use the sd1 length input shaft rough puller needed to be made had no puller for the rear mainshaft bearing,,,so mounted first gear in the vice and tapped the mainshaft through puller and socket employed to remove the mainshaft to inputshaft bearing via 3rd gear and the resulting engine gearbox parts pile which needs to be a working combination some time soon
