Went round a mates house last night to assist with some computer issues he was having and sitting on his drive (quite appart from his Aston Martin DB7 Vantage which I thought he was joking when he siad he's bought one but anyway... He's got a late model Range Rover 2.5TDi "Autobiography" with the two tone leather, the dual climate A/C the bling alloys, the full package in a delightful shade of blue. Its on a private plate but I think its like a '99 or 2000 one. He paid £2500 for it becuase someone told the previosu owner that a fault it had with the air ride might cost several thousand to repair (it cost like £150) and that "anyway road tax on these will be like two grand a year soon". Now I'm not huge on modern cars but that much bling for that little k'ching and you have my attention. I could be ballin' big dawg style in that. car #2 was a bit more me. Worryingly so. its a mid to late 90s (on a private plate) Jaguar XJ6 in lovely claret metallic with an unmarked parchment leather interior. automatic climate control, all the comfort stuff. I noticed there was no "sport mode" button on the console and its only the 3.2 litre (not sure if it was the straight six or the V6). 90K miles and full service history. Owner had to give up driving. Nobody wants a second hand Jag with petrol prices how they are. My mate picked it up for a grand because it was "too cheap to let anyone else have it at that" but now doesn't knwo what to do with it except try sell it to me... LOL But I have to be tempted.... But the reality is that no matter how nice these cars are, they are still just common moderns and nothing is the same as driving your own unique retro. Or is it?

.... it depends.
I can cover 2000 miles a week in my job, so I have a 2-litre X-Type solely for that purpose. But a trip up to North Wales Jaguar Centre has convinced me to possibly move up to an XJ6/XJ8, although I'll wait for the right Daimler derivative to come along. I did have a look at a 300C Chrysler but I couldn't live with taht interior with the miles I do....
Let's face it, if like me you've got to be up at 4am and be 250 miles away by 9am, a modern makes sense - as long as it's a 'decent' one.

Wafting along in Jaguar does appeal to me and I've always liked those XJs.
However, with fuel prices how they are...

My wife has just successfully convinced me to stick with our e30 shitter for a while, I have just given up the thought of owning one of these Jags for at least a year, and you go ahead and spoil it for me, you evil man! I'm pretty sure there isn't another car I'd rather have for the price, you can most definitely find some good ones below £1500. Un-bloody-believable but fact. Oh, and I don't CARE about the fuel prices *says he, clutching the wallet* as I only drive on weekends and I'll gladly pay £5 more per journey if it means driving a Jag AND it's STILL CHEAPER THAN FRIGGIN PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Every time I dabble with a modern, I come away impressed. But everytime I buy a modern, I get bored if it in a stupidly small amount of time. Sure, it's nice to have something that cruises nicely (the current MINI diesel is simply superb) but there's a real numbness to the driving experience. It's ruthless efficiency and it's dull.
Those X300 Jaguars are going to get very cheap now as people seem to have developed a real fear of big fuel guzzlers. Admittedly, it's a gamble - will that stupid tax thing be retrospective or will common sense actually kick in?

I wouldn't know what to do with myself in such a quiet, plush interior. Fall asleep and crash probably.

the retrospective tax is only going back to 2001 - 51 plate cars.

I thought about this for a moment and remembered why I wouldn't - the cost of spare parts and the difficulty and expense of fixing these. Yeah, my current bange.. err... I mean classic is curse word compared to a Jag, and that whole "new cars are boring to drive" thing IMHO is only a rationalization of being unable to afford one (in my case anyway). I certainly didn't find the company Focus boring to drive.
Trouble with owning a more modern car is that all cars eventually break, and when a new one does more often than not the cost of fixing it will be very high, especially if it's a Jag. There's always a trade-off somewhere, the most expensive part on my car (secondhand) would cost around £250 but then that's half of cars resale value.

and I know what you mean about boring. I had an Audi once you know!
Paul, I thought they went to a V6 for the smaller engine when they went to a V8 for the bigger one?

I suppose it looks retro, depends on the miles you do as well.

Not enough to "justify" a modern car, if such a state exists.
More that I looked at it and thought "gosh they are nice, I could see myself rollin' round in that" But then I'd always be wishing it were an XJ-R or the V8 at least so maybe not.

To me a modern car for budget money is just another angle on the retro ethos. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to see fields of oldish but not classic Jags in the show field at RR08, but when you can get that much car for that little money it'd be rude not to as a daily or just a bit of luxury.

The Jags do respond well to the LPG treatment, the only downside being the tank makes the already small boot into a glovebox.
I think you would get bored of it after a short while, and playing with the Ford Fiesta switchgear would annoy as well, if you are going to do it go the whole hog and have the 4.0. I'd suggest plant the seed of £800 in your mates mind and wait for him to get sick of seeing it. I know its the car that happens to be there at the moment but if its a boring exec with reliability for no money you want then what about the Honda Legend, though I wouldn't like to LPG one.

I've never ever owned a modern car so can't really comment on lving with one everyday but SWMBO's Ford Ka is boring as b*ggery to drive. sure its reliable and good on gas but its just got no character! plus for a 10yr old car, its got more rust than either of my dattos - which is shocking!

and I know what you mean about boring. I had an Audi once you know! Paul, I thought they went to a V6 for the smaller engine when they went to a V8 for the bigger one? That's an early type X300 - the large chrome trim on the bumper top is one piece rather than two separate (as though 1/4 bumpers for want of a better desciption) & has rectangular rather than oval indicators. For that model both 3.2 & 4.0 are straight sixes

Those Kas do rust and FWIW I rate them as one of the best of the cars of that class for driving experiance and character. Try a mid 90s Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 Merit if you want the ultimate LOOSE in motoring experiance.
Meh, the Jag feeling is passing now. Its just one of those "shiny car forsale in front of my eyes for not much money" moments.
If I want a Jag I should tap my dad up, he has a 4.0 Sovereign sitting in his garage unused for a couple of years. Lovely car, absolutely full spec. About 60K on the clock and FSH. But in that dull mouldy green metallic colour.
Seems mad to see a car that "young" sitting on flat tyres covered in dust.
