Astra or Escort? Well the Astra is less likely to be rotten as fook O RLY? The one I bought blind from eBay, once the sideskirts were removed, appeared to be a special edition that came with the 'Delete Sills' option. They just weren't there! Was also rotten on the bulkhead, under the rear windows and behind the rear arch, and behind the headlights. The only place that wasn't rotten was above the rear arch where every other GTE in the world has either been repaired, or has bubbles. The guy that came to take it away for the hood, glass and interior wasn't even surprised either, reckoned that level of grot was common. PITA really as it was a great looking car, I'd have another easily, but I never like pulling bodykit off a car before I buy it to check in case I break it! My vote would be an early Golf (non-clipper kitted, I just think they look cleaner) or a Mk4 eScrote. Just not the white one with white roof, and white leather. I was offered a Golf with 12months test, D plate clipper (before the bodykit was introduced) for £600, needed a hood though (£225 fitted). Still within budget, rest of the car was pretty mint. Just my opinion based on the Mk3's I've seen thru work Maybe they were better looked after but I think we've only had one rough Astra in and that had been bodged up after a shunt and left in a car park for a year! Others have been clean as The last few Escorts have lacked wheel arches etc and one had the optional 'battery fitted in the glovebox' Funnily enough I also know of a Golf for sale, white with white interior and a good clean black roof. Recently tested too I think, can get details if you like. Think the last convert I drove was an early sixties Singer Gazelle Had to road test it a few times to figure an overdrive prob. Still, sun was shining

Saab convertibles >fail< your economy criteria, MPG wise, at least turbo's for sure. Non-retro GM900 - maybe but I've yet to hear anyone running classic Saab turbo averaging over 25MPG. They do look very, very nice though. Astra As for the Saab, I already have a 1997 900XS so I'd like something different. E30 would be nice, but I agree with the price issues. Thanks for all the info guys, it's certainly helping. Chris you're really driving a vauxhall a real saab convertible will certainly be different. Economy is OK, the later catalyst models can do around 30+ mpg. Audi 80 cab is good too and quite decent on fuel.

My Golf Gti Cab... I wanted a Hatch but couldn't afford one, Ive had it for 20 months, spent about a grand on it, and done approx. 25,000 miles. It does 30-35 to the gallon and gets driven hard and put away wet!! Without a doubt the best 500 notes ive ever spent! The money I have spent could have been saved if I hadnt bought coil-overs and had it painted... My mate has a GL Cab for sale, 1800, mohair hood, looks like mine but with bumpers and has black and silver BBS of a sportline... I rekon 600 quid will buy it... Definately not a girls car, although they are welcome to come along for a ride.........

The Golf would get my vote, easiest car to work on I've had, and i'm a total spaz when it comes to fixing cars. Comes in a couple of engine flavours and doesn't attract as much scene tax as you'd think.

Flannel.... ooof! ticks my boxes, love the banded wheels (G60 steels?) and the subtlety.

Forget the girly comments, if thats what you want then that what you should get, good to listen to all the advice but then follow your wish. People who never owned or drove a convertible cannot start to understand the feel good factor these car's have when the sun is out and the roof is down. I am middle aged and I am not trying to recapture anything I just love driving my mk3. remember one thing that the Escort and the golf convertibles were built by Karmann and if looked after they last well even in the UK.

Yep they are G60's but reversed, not banded... that photo was taken a while back, the back ones have been changed now as they looked funny from behind. It now has 8x15 Chevy truck rims with G60 centres...

Try looking at the late 80's mustang convertibles.
Can usually get 30mpg on these if not too heavy on the loud peddle but can get a 14 sec quater out of em if you want some fun.
Not a girls car shape in anyway.

An entirely personal view.
I think Astra and later Escort cabs are a bit kind of naff. Sort of white socks and black slip ons cars.
Earlier Escort cabs are less naff, in my view, partly because they are older and partly because I like the styling. Golfs are better again and probably the only one I'd actually buy.
