So, I'm getting rid of my Capri soon as I need something that's a little better on fuel. As such, my old man is lending me £1000 so I can buy a motor and I'll pay him back when the Capri is sold. This leads me to my next quandry.... ....I'm thinking about something which comes sans roof. The only problem is that as soon as I mention a car within my budget I get told it's girly. Are they though? The choices are... or or or or, and this is my fave... What are you're opinions? It needs to be something 30mpg-capable, but not specifically four seats as we have our Saab for family duties. Discuss chums!

Couple of things...... Sod the Girly statements.
Those Renaults do it for me. A bit like the Peugeots, simple, plain and honest.
For £1k you could find some Mazda MX5's and the are well known to be pretty much bulletproof, and rust resistant.
If you need a "family car" then the Eurobox type converts may be an option.
Alternately, just type in Convertible onto the Ebay search and see what else comes out.
I would love a convert, but for many reasons it cannot happen right now.
Great stuff and points to your dad for helping you move along.

I read somewhere that it was ok for a bloke to roll a rag-top without looking a t1t as long as the length of the car = more than 3x the drivers height LOL

If we're talking stereotypes I wouldn't just say girly, I'd add 'middle aged man trying to recapture his youth' as well Seriously the Renault is the most interesting, but probably the most likely to go wrong in an expensive way. Guy I know used to look after one and it was a PITA, as were a couple of 16v's we used to see. Top suspension mounts also had a nasty habit of cracking up if I remember rightly. Astra or Escort? Well the Astra is less likely to be rotten as fook Golf will suffer from added scene tax and if the filler neck has rotted, well by the time you've got the curse word out got it running ok (i.e. not cutting out and randomly mucking about) you'll be so sick of it you'll sell it! That fate befell the last three I know of with that problem. Looks like it's an Astra then, or my favourite option, get the jigsaw out and fit a Webasto in the Capper ;D

Me and a friend were just talking about this. We agreed they were nearly always girly, but the worse issue... they're horrible. Of course, Midgets and maybe an MX-5 are kinda nice. GOlf cabs though? No way.

If it's in Initial D, it's not girly. You'll struggle to to find one under a grand, you'll get close tho

MX5s do rust. Especially import ones. Especially import ones for sale for about a grand or less. I kinda like the Golf cabrio. Needs to be de-kitted. Never understood why nobody likes them "on scene". Mk3 or Mk4 Escort cab would be acceptable as retro ;D if non-chavved. I saw a stock Rover 216 cabrio the other day and I thought it looked quite unusual now. I had a 416 Automatic and I had my foot in the carpet the whole time I owned it and it still did 30+ MPG. Never let me down and all that. T16 tubby swap on the cabrio FTW. convetibles aren't girly. Its just that a lot of converibles are based on girly cars... 206CC etc.

I had a tintop R19 16v just before Xmas. The top mounts were cracked. It was also falling apart inside in that special French car way. Gearbox was as sloppy as a night on the vindaloo and it was a gamble as to whether you'd engage first or reverse to pull away... It did, however, shift! I can see it being a decent car if you get a good one. No scene tax either so your grand should go a fair way. Mine was cheap transport for a couple of months until I moved it on for the £250 I paid for it and used the money to buy..... My Golf GTI Cabriolet. Yes, it's full on hairdresser spec white but I don't care. It's brilliant to drive and that's that. If you were to get a Golf, don't bother with anything less than a GTI and put some decent suspension on it to sharpen the handling a bit. I also prefer the earlier ones without the bloated clipper body kit it got later in life.

If I thought I could make it fit, I'd have a 5 pot 20v Turbo from an Audi S2 in it. It would need a bulge in the front like the bow of a ship though! Brings a new meaning to Clipper I suppose!

Saab 900 (preferably turbo) beats all of those by a mile.
