Oh yes, one thought that's just come back to me is that I seem to remember something about fitting the freight rover cover when retro fitting the NAD as it changes the position of the injection pump either higher or lower(can't remember which) for clearance.
Also avoid the TD version of the Land Rover 'red block' engine(2.5 NAD as per ebay unit). Basically it was a stock lump with a turbo strapped on and has a tendency to pressurise the crankcase and blow its own seals

If they're cheap enough I'm so getting overdrive. Anything that's cost effective to increase fuel economy and top speed on a run like that is worth having

Cool Landie Stronger chassis on an ex-mod Landie? Hows that then - didnt realise that. Mine is ex-mod...but then 45 years or rust probably doesnt make any difference anyway (will be strong as nails after we have finished with it though ) Good thing about the ex-mod ones is the extra fuel tank (although like mine, a lot of them have been removed, but at least it has the outrigger). £375 is a good price for a runner. You sometimes see them go for a silly prices (partic if they seller gives it a quick going over with a paint brush for some odd reason!) LWB is deffo the more practical approach for long trips (hence going for a SWB lol)

Oh and autohausdolby - a good way to increase fuel economy a bit and reduce noise is to fit an electric fan.
Regards
Alex

I'm going to scrapyard one right up for it, probably with an override switch on the dash. I'm used to driving rear engined, front rad water cooled VWs, so I don't like to leave anything to chance ;D

Incidentally if you don't want to do a 200tdi conversion but fancy a diesel I have got an uber rare 2.25 turbo diesel coming out of a landy soon. (personaly I would do a 200tdi) I will talk to the co owners about price but i would imagine about 150ish, it needs a fuel pump as the previous owner ran it on veg oil and knackered it, however replace it with a bosch pump and fill one of the dual tanks with diesel and one with veg oil.

Picture the scene - Last Sunday morning, Manchester airport. Autohausdolby buys a Land Rover magazine of some description. Fifi: When I get home, is there going to be a Land Rover sitting on the drive? AHD: No! Fifi: Course not, my car lives on the drive. Will there be one on the road in front of the house? AHD: That would entail buying a working one. Fifi: Will there be one in your workshop then? I've met you before.... This thread appears 4 days later! ;D AHD - Fifi has you totally nailed ;D

"Your mileage may vary" - another words, just because I didn't have any trouble with my OD it doesn't mean you won't! And what do they normally go for? Can't help there - we just got lucky and someone gave it to us (and a load of other LR stuff). I'd serious recommend posting on all the forums you frequent about this trip and the charities it supports, etc. You'd be amazed at what good fortune can pop out of woodwork

We have fitted fairy overdrives to all our 200tdi landies as it is essential for getting up to decent speeds, you can change the diff for a rangerover one which is a better ratio but not if you have the salsbury(sp?) axle which you should have on the ffr, the overdrives are reeeeeaaly easy to fit and all ours have been reliable although some are noisier than others suggesting different amounts of wear, they generally go for about 300pounds but make sure if you buy one you have all the parts such as the gear which bolts to the gearbox before you slot in the overdrive and the lever etc as although they are available they are expensive. The NA 2.5 diesel engines are low power but probably much better than the 2.25 (even with a turbo) I would probably go for that on a budget, they were also put into most military landies so will have been well looked after. Hope something there helps. if you want any more specific info let me know. no more time got to go.....
