W00t! Have received e-mails back from the man with the Land Rover and Julian. Looks like we're in for the rally, and I've spoken to the LR owner on the phone about collection. It's not going to be for at least a week, and I've got to figure a cunning way to get it home without shelling out to much cash - I need that to sort the engine/buy a hardtop etc.... Updates to follow as and when! Where is the LR? And yay for Morocco! ;D

Could you not source a decent 2.25 or 2.5 n/a LR diesel? There are a few on eBay.

Apparently the 2.25 Diesels are worse than useless. I'd rather go with something a bit more modern, but gearing appears to be a problem whatever you do.
It's in Oxfordshire btw Fi.

Looks like it. Drive to Oxford and ring the AA seems to be the favoured option at the moment.

Sounds like a plan.

Cheapest/easiest option would be the 2.5 engine from the early defender and if memory serves correct if yours has the 5 brg engine it's a straight swap. Just have to look out for cracks across the ports on that engine
Sadly its a Landy whatever engine you fit will feel noisy and harsh. 2mm thick floor pan and no sound deadening does that! ;D

I don't mind that - 200TDi or Di is the preferred option at the moment, but I hear the combo of low revving Diesel and series drivetrain gives you a top speed of 43.

My brother-in-law has a older swb landrover that's had the 200tdi and box fitted to it by previous owner, pulls pretty darned well fully laden!

Excuse my dimness but aren't these the same (Pug) engines as the LDV400? Apparantly painfully slow but incredibly reliable.

Aren't they [overdrive] pricey/unreliable/a it of a faff to fit? No, it took us less than a day, and that included fabricating the lever. IIRC you just unbolt a cover plate from the back of the GB and that exposes a shaft / gear. You remove that and the OD has a corresponding shaft / gear that replaces it with the OD gear box then "hangs" out the back of the LR gear box. We fitted a Fairey one like this. Good pic of the lever here as well. I'd say if you can get a cheap one, it would be really worth it. We didn't have any bother with it on the trip, but as always YMMV

Just a quick pointer on this, both the Land Rover 2.5 NAD and Peugeots were fitted in LDV350/400 series(I had the Landy one in my old Freight Rover beavertail) but they are different engines. Can't speak for the pug but the land rover units are generally fairly rugged but as stated earlier they ain't rapid!
IIRC the 2286 5brg unit and the 2.5 share the same block but use different cranks whereas the 200Tdi is a different block but same crank.
If you decide/can afford turbo return to ebay and bid on a complete discovery then you see/hear engine running and make decent money from the leftovers.Either unit will feel harsh through europe though, and comparatively slow reckon on cruising at 50mph and perhaps 60 downhill backwind farting!
Personal choice would be to stick with an LR product(Tdi or NAD subject to budget)rather than hybrid options like the perkins etc
