Wires aren't evil - it's just the chrome ones. Minilites & wood dash kits are also evil - ffs, they were just a cheap sports car..... However, white, on silver painted wires & whitewalls for the New England look Saw a BRG GT a while back, on early steels with chrome hubcaps, & it looked superb ;D Oh, and o/d ftw

Never really appealed but... Think I might just try one to see why they're the 'default' classic choice.....I fancy a V8

As a previous owner of a red roadster with (painted!) wires* I'm a fan. Despite being small in the scheme of things they maybe aren't as chuckable as you'd think, possibly a feature of them being a 40+ year old chassis design. But, perhaps that's a modern perspective and only a minor downside. They're stilll chuckable, as attested to by the fact that so many of them get out for motorsports use on weekends.
My Dad bought a green roadster recently and it's not as good as I remember mine being, despite being restored in the last five years or so. I suspect that it didn't (and doesn't) get enough use and needs a thorough greasing, wheel alignment, (front-end rebuild...).
They're the default classic choice, I reckon, because they're easy to own. The clubs are everywhere, parts are easy to get through the clubs or through the remanufactured stuff. And then they cater to most everyone. If you want to be a flat-cap wearing obsessive, go get the Clausager (sp?) book and go crazy ensuring that your o/d switch has the correct toggle lever. If you want to hot it up, go get one of those "build a B-series for power" books or buy a rubber-bumper and swap in a rover V8 (though an SR20T, 4AGZE or 13b would also be cool).
Oh, apparently the designers of the 'B hated them on wires. Hated. It's in a book on 'B history I have, so it must be true. Banded steels with original hubbies FTW. Though I think my dad's green one would look ace on Sakuras.

I must admit MGBs don't really do it for me. When you look at the price of a decent one and look what else you can get for the same money, they just don't stack up for me.
That said, an early car with plain steel wheels and hubcaps in a colour other than red is a very pretty car.

You mean these type of wheels...... Mind you, there are some interesting 'Sakura' s on there..... As for MGB's, go cheap, buy a T16 Rover engine and chuck that in; 133Bhp or 197Bhp turbo option. That'll give the suspension a workout and the mod is on the interweb somewhere, I've read it... The PCD is 4 1/2 inches not b****y 114.3mm. Jeez! And the difference is? ;D One's Metric, one's Imperial for us older b*ggers......... ;D

Ah, the Morris Oxford Coupe. Wheezy, boat-anchor of an engine with ancient mechanicals wrapped up in an adequately attractive package (until the rubber bumpers), owned by fossilised dullards. Right, that's the cliche's done. This one was on the bay this week: cgi.ebay.co.uk/Mgbgt-V8-Track-Race-Car-1972_W0QQitemZ330227772342Positively sexual. And who's going to crack out the picks of the Nissan motored one? Do it, but do it right.

i had my mates one for a couple of weeks while he was away, it was freshly restored but boggo standard (and slower than my hillman hunter!) i do think they are pretty cars, but they are not good driving cars, they are very old fashioned and they feel it, if thats what you want from your old brit sports car (and plenty of people do) thats fine, but personally i'd spend the money on an MX-5 for an open two seater and if you must have an old brit coupe sports car a GT6 felt better to me.
