You're kidding?! That's the stupidest, most ridiculous, most interfering, Big Brotherish rule I've ever heard, they're going to stop us working on our cars now?! What the f*ck is their problem?! You're right RearwheelNick, this place is turning into an Orwell novel, let Tony back in and we'll all be wearing ID and bloody transmitters so they can track us like we've committed a crime, we won't be able to change a lightbulb in the bathroom or put new spark plugs in our motors, anyone they don't particularly like or agree with will be arrested without trail and jailed as a "terrorist" or "threat to security" (something our benevolent fuhrer Tony borrowed from his master George W Bush, what with his ability to send anyone vaguely middle-eastern looking to Guantanamo or Camp Delta for no reason other than they're a different colour to him so he doesn't trust them), and more than likely all our cars will be scrapped and we'll all be forced to drive around in base model diesel Ford Focuses. They have a cheek to call themselves a left-wing labour party. Having said that, I don't fancy our chances under Michael Howard or Charles Kennedy either, and we'll be a dictatorship even quicker under the UKIP and Robert Kilroy-Goebbels-Silk! That's it, I'm voting Monster Raving Loony Party!

A good few years ago my mum and dad were thinking of emmigrating to the US. They found out that it wasn't worth applying as in the 50's my Dad was in the Communist Party of GB and therefore was not (is not?) eligable to emmigrate to "the land of the free".
Good job too, he's quite glad they didn't go!
Nick et al, don't underestimate the sheep like ability of the masses to beleive that it's all for there own good. You could tell most people that they have to spend the rest of their lives in a stinking jail cell just as long as you dress it up as "to help fight terrorism". In fact I'm sure the only reason the govt don't try it on is that their big business buds need us outside in order to sell us stuff.
Any society that regards shopping as a leisure activity is fundamentally sick! (cars apart of course ;D)

These 'no maintenance' ideas crop up every few years, mainly on bikes. I seem to remember they nearly managed to get it through in the 90's. It was to be enforced by fitting shear bolts (the head comes off a specified torque) to prevent removal at home and sealing of components. They backed down eventually after MAG got involved when a power limit on new bikes was put forward. Type approval of parts (ie you can only fit parts approved by manufacturer) is a favourite. Another idea was to stop the sale of oil in more than 1 litre bottles to prevent oil changes at home.

well it must be time for mr (and mrs) joe public to stand up (after emerging from beneath there vehicles) and throw spanners / nuts / bolts /oil / clutches etc at the opressors (mr blaiR) who threaten many peoples hobby and more peoples affordable way of owning a car!
i really don't think it will catch on it would affect too many jobs and would destroy motoring heritage. maybe its time for motorists to form a group similar to mag (motorcycle action group) as i would not trust anything rwd with the new generation of mechanics.
just imagine taking something 70's / 80's in to a garage an a spotty kid asks where to plug in the diagnostic computer? ;D
if anything it would reduce the number of cars on the road and reduce the taxes the goverment collects, which may be the kick in the stones they actually need.
think I'm rambling, time to stop !

If this is true, I can't see how they're gonna police it. Let's be honest here, cannabis is illegal, but people still smoke it. There's also a good number of unqualified mechanics working in garages up and down the country. To be honest, the average home mechanic is probably more knowledgeable about the car in question, espeially if they're an enthusiast of the make/model. A die-hard Mini fan is obviously going to be more knowledgeable about Minis than your average "mechanic" in a "Fast Fit" centre. I dare say that ther'll be significant opposition to this, especially amoungst the oder motorist who can't / doesn't want to pay garage labour charges. Maybe it's time for a political party that looks after the motorist, because none of the ones in the House of Commons gives a curse word about us! VOTE RETRO!!!!!

Maybe not quite such a daft idea as it sounds. After all the max power party are fielding candidates in Southend this year (policies: 90mph m-way speed limit, free road tax for drivers under 25, breast enlargements free to any old slag on the NHS).... Right. Let's draw up a Manifesto! Gonna get ourselves elected! ;D

there's a garage opposite my office and I did once take my car (samba Rallye) at the time in as it was close to ask if they could fix something while I was at work (can't remember what - was a while ago). I do remember that they said they'd rather not do it as none of the mechanics knew anything about old cars and they couldn't plug the computer into it!!
It was a frikking samba for arses sake, not a Citroen DS or anyhing! Imagine this multiplied by a million all over the country. On the other hand it's a good business opportunity for a retro minded mechanic!
sidenote: My proper garage, RS Autos (http://www.hotrodtees.co.uk/rs_autoservices.htm) got a telling off from their bank for all the cars they have lying around (eh!!) Apparently the BM told them they would make more money doing services only on more modern cars and they should aim to have the garage cleared of cars every evening. These are people who love cars. Rob (one of the owners) has a road legal 800BHP MG Magnette drag car !! Needless to say he was shown the door promptly.

You've got to love the US, haven't you? They claim to be the home of the free where anyone wiling to work hard can get in and become rich and successful (yeah right, is that why the developed captialist country with the biggest problem with working class poverty is the US? Check it out, it's absolutely true, there are millions upon millions of hard-working but very poor Americans!) and yet the minute they find out you don't/at one point did not agree with their government's point of view you're out on your ear! Now that's democracy! ;D ;D I've been to America as to meet relatives there a few times, but luckily they've never found out about my political dealings (the pro-leftist, anti-government publicity campaigns I've been involved in etc), I'd hate to imagine what would have happened if I'd forgot to take the sickle and hammer off the lapel of my trench-coat and the bright red "down with government greed!!" leaflets out of my pockets! I'd probably be in chains, blindfolded, and in Guantanamo right now! But anyway, I like the Retro Rides Party idea, let's go for it, if you like I'll head up the Scottish division, but I'll be needing recruits for the RRPM (Retro Rides Party Militia) to fight off the fascists (most relevant modern political parties) and liberate the country, Spanish civil war style, except without us getting defeated by the fascists, betrayed by the Kremlin, and all getting executed for treason!

OK here's a couple of policy ideas:- 1) Reduce the VAT on petrol to 5% (under EU rules, once VAT has been applied to something, it can't be taken off. 5% is the lowest rate possible). 2) Reinstate 25yr-old tax exemption. 3) All unnecessary speed cameras to be removed, only those near accident blackspots to remain. 3) Compulsory retraining for all people carrier, 4X4 and white van drivers. 5) Mandatory security guards in car-parks to cut down on car crime. 6) A clamp-down on rip-off labour charges at garages. 7) A ban on all congestion charges until a cheap, reliable public transport system is in place.
I realise that we need to get the mainstream motorist on board if there's any chance of a pro-motorist political party to get any chance of winning seats. But I reckon if enough people get their heads together on this, we could gain support. After all, a sizeable percentage of the population are motorists.
As a footnote to this, I've just had my Octavia back form the local garage, where I'd taken it for a new cambelt (believe it or not, you can't get a Manual for the car, besides which I hate working on modern cars, they do my head in). The mechanics there are complete car nuts, and very good mechanics. They told me that the last person to change the belt cocked up the fuel-pump timing (it's a diesel). The last belt was changed by a main dealer................

I agree with you that if we were actually to do something like this, then we need to get the majority of motorists behind us. Especially considering that a vast chunk of the population are motorists, meaning that if a sizeable chunk of that sizable chunk voted for us then we'd be too significant to ignore, wouldn't we? I don't think what Moggyman just said there would be at all unpopular with motorists, considering that every driver I've ever spoke to about speed cameras has agreed that the individual ones that do actually prevent accidents are the only ones that have a reason to still be in place, and the rest should be immediately scrapped, just about everyone realises that fuel prices are a rip-off and that most of the money is going straight into the pockets of various powerful people in Westminister and not going being spent on public services or on aquiring more oil (seeing as we get it relatively cheap even after the war in Iraq, yet charge more than anyone else in the EU, so there's a lot of profit being made), and there are plenty of other valid points you lot have made, but this post is going to be enormous and very boring if I keep going on like this! I really think there should be (and isn't) a party that should be taking all this down and using it in an election campaign. I've had a couple of people tell me that I should start a political party, and if ever I do this sort of thing'll be a big part of the agenda. Of course, some of our other policies would be slightly more controversial, like letting in immigrants who actually have something to contribute to society (and there are loads, this tabloid curse word that there are millions of layabouts wanting to sneak in and immediately go on the dole is just that, curse word manufactured entirely by the imaginations of narrow-minded people who tragically for us and asylum seekers have found themselves in a position where their words are respected and taken as truth by a lot of people, I've met a number of people who came here as refugees and are now contributing to society, and I've met a number of east europeans who've tried a number of times to get into the UK and can't despite having talents and qualifications that are urgently needed here, like the Poles I met in Newtonmore a few years back, some of whom spoke surprisingly good English because they do a lot of driving in the UK, who desparately want to leave their underpaid jobs driving hopelessly unreliable, obselete lorries for ridiculous hours and at ridiculous wages, and come here to the UK seeking decent employment, which should be fair enough considering that the UK is currently very short of talented HGV drivers, and that these particular Poles were experienced HGV drivers, yet they can't get VISAs for love nor money, and know that if they enter illegally they won't get a driving job and will soon get deported.) I could go on about my opinions for longer, but this post is turning into a manifesto as it is! ;D ;D ;D

hmm getting some policy ideas:
Bring back 4star petrol! its safer and better ;D
Ban 4x4s from school runs (exept retro ones)
combine road tax in with insurance - we do have the technology so y not use it?
change licence law so instead of having 6 points probation on licence after test you are limited to cars with small engines (up to 1.2) for 1 year or option of doing an advanced course to obtain unlimited license
ALL mk2 vw golf driver's to have blowing exhausts (;D like mrsigmas wifes ;D)
ALL citroen saxo's and pug 106's to be used to build bonfires on guy fawkes night
anyone driving wearing a baseball cap will be pulled over and tested for use of illigal substances
hmm anyone else got any?

Hey I wear a baseball cap ;D Well it covers my lack of hair and has the Imp Club written on it.
Why is 4 star safer then unleaded? I did hear in the past that unleaded was more flammable but that sounds abit odd.
