Its been lonely in the saddle since the horse died. And all these pics of BMX's on here in recent months made me want another BMX after a good 15 year absence
Back in the day I had all sorts of cool rides and never paid much for them, but finding something half decent for chump change these days was proving difficult
Annoyed that I couldn't find anything for months that was cheap and local, in my frustration I eventually I ended up in a bidding war with someone over a knackered Haro.
Advertised as a 'HARD' BMX with 16" wheels and no other details, I thaught I would get it for nowt, and with a bit of identification help from Reanimation it looked like it was actually an entry level Haro F2 with 20" wheels and a bent fork, so not worth a deal.
Playing it cool went right out the window however when it came down to the dying minuites of the auction and I ended up the winning bidder at £50. Ooops!
Oh well at least it was local, and when I went round there I decided i'd knock the price down for the bent fork that wasn't mentioned.
I wasn't expecting to be doing business with the 11 year old that owned it, but I managed to give my morals the old heave-ho anyway while I did some tyre kicking, pulled out my bent fork ace card and knocked the child down to £40. Live and learn kiddo, live and learn ;D
His dad was there to oversee the deal and it looked like the family weren't short of a few bob, so I don't feel to bad
On the plus side it turned out to actually be an F3, which meant a cromo frame and a 3-piece crank, which is a good start.
The fork was completely Donald-Ducked, but I checked the frame caefully and its absolutely fine.
So, time to make this thing look a bit better
I really like the look of these new school BMX's, and decided i'd try to update mine a bit aswell.
First thing to do was replace the Fork, I found this Cromo Primo fork second hand, sorted
I noticed the new school BMX's all seem to favour smaller front chainrings, and I have an inate fear of going -over-apex from catching the chainring anyway so.....
......I scored this Tree 30T ring off Ebay
But I cant have a 30T up front and a 16T out back. I needed something like a 13T which also meant I needed a flip-flop hub.
Oddyssey provided me with a 13T freewheel.....
......And I scored this Gusset wheel with flip-flop hub for £20
The next thing I wanted to do was get rid of the origional seat an crappy steel seatpost.
I found a cheap girls bike dumped in the street and took the seat off, stripped all the foam off and cut the nose and rear off it to make it tiny!
I also removed the front brake (want to go brakeless one day but not 'til i've got my confidence up!)
All that was left to do then was remove the crappy reflectors, pegs, stickers, give it a T-cut and then apply a couple of other stickers at the end of the top tube and the end of the down tube, new skool stylZ!
And its about finished for now!
A quick comaprison before:
.....And after:
Better!
Just going to enjoy riding it for now, and upgrade as I go. Thanks for reading!
