Got given an Imac G3, don't know anything about Macs and had no use for it so I thought i'd see what I could do with the case as when I looked at em on ebay they were so cheap it seemed pointless trying to sell it and I do quite like the look of em. Anyway, this is a G3 same as mine. Took it to bits Made a bit of an error here I think, modified the macs slot loading cd rom to take an ordinary pc connector at 5 volts. Had a spare lcd monitor took that to bits as well I had to cut away a lot of the mounts that had held the mac tube type monitor, and modify the case slightly at the side to get the lcd into it, moved all the bits about on the back of it till I had space for everything then stuck it all down with hot glue and gaffer tape for extra security. had a spare one of these Used the drive from the mac as an extra storage drive so it has a decent amount of room on it. stuck the monitors power supply on with hot glue, I did think about running it off the pc power supply as its 12v but I was a bit concerend about the small 140w psu having enough oomph to run it as well. heres the psu mounted on top of the base plate under the angled mother board which sits like this thats as far as its gone so far, all the bits still work except the cd rom which was working when I tested it, still this is experimental anyway, and once I have everythinbg sorted i'll be changing the internals for the much more powerfull stuff out of my proper pc so the cd rom will be upgraded to a dvd rom anyway, and instead of faffing aout soldering a connector on, i'll adapt a mac 50 pin connector to run it.

Skillz... You don't happen to frequent BT do you? *n BT? well seems to work, i spliced the power leads together and soldered them onto the plug in the mac put it back together and fired ii up, i have to make some small extension leads so that things like the mouse and keyboard can be plugged in to the panel in theside of the mac inside of fed inside the case to plug into the mother board but that should be fairly simple. I have fitted a light inside the case as well so it glows blue, but it needs to be a bit brighter i think. heres a pic, the bottom part of the shell isnt on it yet as i have cables hanging out the bottom but you can see it works.

nice conversion! but why the step backwards in technology? I was waiting for the closet weirdo mac fan to appear. ;D cos macs are pants is the simple answer, they are more expensive to buy for the same speed as a pc, almost impossible to upgrade other than buying a new one, and you cant get the bits to fix em when they die which they do quite often, ebay is always full of broken macs, if you want to run every piece of software you need a pc as there is still lots of stuff that wont run full speed on a mac. There was a time about ten years ago when macs were much better than pc's for working with graphics or music but pc's closed the gap and overtook, and macs rely on peoples memories of back then and the fact they are pretty stylish to look at. macs have they're place, they are fine for those people who want to buy a computer, plug it in and not do anything complicated with it and are happy to have to buy a new one every couple of years, personally i like fiddlin with stuff and you need a pc for that. oh yeah, fitted a wireless mouse and keyboard now as well so thats cured the problem of somewhere to plug them in on the outer casing and added a wirless card so no need for a network port either, gonna see if i can take a usb hub apart and that should give me a useable and non messy pc.

i thought macs were better for music (production not listening) because they don't have an internal fan which can be picked up whilst sampling??

That's great! I'd say retro, and a proper design classic, and it's had new life breathed into it. Quality! I like Macs but has anyone seen the price of a Mac Mini with a half decent spec? Shocking! Or maybe I'm just tight?!

I thought macs were better for music (production not listening) because they don't have an internal fan which can be picked up whilst sampling?? Back in the early days of fruityloops etc that was the case, but now its not so true. Also this whole mac/PC thing has caused apple to jump over to PC hardware, which says alot. I did my 3D degree on Mac's and I do like them but PCs are my main love. I currently run a G5 with windows and MAC O/S 10.5 dual boot, they can even read each others file structure now (NTFS). One mouse button is the spawn of the devil the end lol.....

BT = Bit-tech.net
Macs have used PC-compatable drives, memory et cetera for years. Upgradeability isn't an excuse.
My next purchase will probably be a Macbook...

BT = Bit-tech.net Macs have used PC-compatable drives, memory et cetera for years. Upgradeability isn't an excuse. My next purchase will probably be a Macbook... *n you try buying a faster M/B and CPU for a mac, drives and memory are not "upgrades" as such, they should be maxed anyway if your after performance, you wouldnt buy a car with only half the pistons in it and no back seats thinking "oh thats all right, I'll buy them later when i need more room and want to go faster" Also ring them up and see if they'll sell you a new power supply or see if they want you to send them the computer back so their trained technicians can fix it for you. macs are fine for people who don't want to fiddle and are happy to use the software that comes with it, for anyone else you want a pc.

Arguably (and I have used both, at great length) Macs are more stable for long bouts of music and film editing. For the latter there's Final Cut Pro which is industry standard. Pro Tools and Logic are there for music but you can get the former on a PC. They are massively overpriced for this attribute as well, but after 15 hour stints doing things you really don't want the fool to crash even with back up.
The rest to me is just clever marketing, just like with the sodding iPod. Have Apple made the battery last so you can actually skip through your tracks for more than two hours? Have they curse word. Have they made it look prettier? YES! What a surprise, the marketing men win again, just like with modern cars. So long as it's pretty and people will oooh and ahhh over it, it doesn't matter two curse word as to whether it works right, is easy to repair or has better longevity than that of a split condom.
That's one mistake I won't make again, until they start using batteries that aren't a bag of curse word.
And I agree Macs are curse word for upgrades. You don't have to constantly maintain them like PCs though, and spend three and half hours every curse word night clicking 'no' to everything because every piece of software is too clever for its own good, doing everything but actually running stably and properly.
So I spose on balance Macs come out evens. I wish they'd do a plain Jane one that was cheaper with the same internals, a bit of a 205 \ 309 switcheroo, and then the resulting drop in sales would make people see how crushingly effective the marketing man is these days.

see how many morons want the iPhone cos it looks cool, then watch them having trouble texting with its crappy touch screen keypad and surfing with its oh so slow internet connection, the Nokia N sereis phones all do everything better, but watch the iphone hit the top of the charts anyway.

Macs look sexy but that is about it, nowadays, they are just a high end PC with a Unix based OS - I am not saying that OS-X is not good to use, it is - but having to upgrade my entire OS, just to use an ipod touch is not really on (My sister is a mac fanbois and has just had to do this). Nowadays, the G5 case is a little generic and is easily surpassed by many PC cases - and as I can install OS-X on my PC, whats the difference? I would live to do similar to a G4 tower as they look awesome and suit my tastes but funds are not quite there... Unfortunately, Macs always sell well as too many people prefer style to substance and as a company, apple do that very well. Anyhew Ubuntu FTW so tbbbttthhhhh to all non Open Sauce OS's!

I love Apple computers (they'll have you killed for calling them Macs these days.....!), but I use a Vista machine all day. Why? Fed up of working hard to be different.
Going back a few years, I used an Amiga. Had an A500 for games in 1990, got an A1200, then got serious about computers. Ended up being the first person in the UK to build it into a PC tower case, with external keyboard, PC power supply, twin CD drives. A lot of work. See Aminet for my guide! The mainboard died in that one so built a new one in a desktop PC case with an Ateobus, PowerPC card and 68040 copro, 64-bit GFX card, SCSI Zip and CD writer, soundcard, internal modem etc. Now this is in 1998-1999, LONG after the Amiga 'scene' had become a little bit select. Software is getting a bit scarce, hardware was expensive (my GFX card was a Cirrus Logic ISA card with a few tweaks, but cost me £230! PowerPC board cost £200 too...). The Amiga could still do far far more per MHz than the PC equivalent but I started to get sick and tired of hunting down buggy software to do the same job a PC could do - if I needed to send a Word document to someone at uni I was screwed, RTF was the best I could manage. I could browse the net fine, but as soon as I hit a webpage with Flash or Javascript, I was crippled.
Why do I mention this? I find the Apple software to be very similar. Yeah I know it does plenty out of the box, but it's bloody hard work tracking down software do everything I'm used to (along with 90% of the PC-owning population). Winamp? No mate, not on here! And if anyone suggests iTunes, I'll cut their nuts off along with the man who invented the bloody thing. TERRIBLE! Safari is slow and buggy, and the built-in email client is useless. It's like they've designed the OS purposefully to be different, just so it's different. The hardware is great, I love the notebooks' build quality and screens, but the OS is just trying too hard to be not-Vista.
Anyway that's all it is these days, an OS. You can tweak OSx to run on a PC, and you can run Vista on Apple hardware. Apple have even built in Windows compatibility to Leopard, so you can run apps natively - so they know it's missing things that are important!
As for the iPhone, that's useless I agree - can't use it one-handed thanks to the fancy touchscreen, which needs two fingers to zoom and select. However the Nokia N-series are equally useless thanks to the amount of time they'll spend being repaired, or having a new firmware flashed. Bugs galore, just to get a new phone out to market. The N95 is possibly the most useless gadget I've ever used, the only saving grace is the camera but that's only the quality of a £40 digicam. Get an HTC smartphone, all the good bits of the iPhone but £350 cheaper, unlockable, mine's got GPS and 3G as well as Wifi/BT/GPRS and you can install whatever software you want unlike the iPhone. Oh and I don't need to use iTunes just to even activate it.
Sorry, rant over!
