Ah, the mac-PC flame war begins.
Doing the job I do I've owned and used both many times over in the last couple of decades.
My take on it is that MacOS X is the best operating system against Windows but it is let down by unreliable hardware. Mac owners have to pay a "mac tax" of about £100 per year as bits keep breaking. The upgradeability isn't so much of an issue these days and neither is the expense - if you get what you pay for. But over the odds for a computer that will break just isn't worth it.
If I could legally run MacOS X on this Dell I would. I can't, so I dual boot with Ubuntu.

Bonkers conversion, that's like ripping your engine out and putting pedals in your car ;D
Ooh! Am I a Mac user?
The argument will never be won.

It won't - and I'm writing this on an early dual processor G5, while gazing at a G4 laptop, a G4, 2 Classics, an imac, a Mac clone - all still fully operational - but if other people say it's "unreliable hardware", once again, it must be true

I love Macs. I've owned loads of them, starting with an LCII and ending with my wife's iBook. The key word there is "Owned". Except for the iBook which is on its 2nd PSU, motherboard, reed switch and trackpad, they're all deceased. After nearly 20 years in the tech business I still own my first 32 bit computer, a Commodore Amiga(working) and my first laptop, an HP Omnibook 600(working) but all the macs have died well before their time. Great OS, unreliable overpriced hardware, a triumph of form over function. I'd really love to say different, but I just can't. Sorry.

Strange how experiences differ I've always found them to be eleventy hundred times more reliable than anything else. Still, "The argument will never be won", and there's no point having it

I thought macs were better for music (production not listening) because they don't have an internal fan which can be picked up whilst sampling?? Back in the early days of fruityloops etc that was the case, but now its not so true. Also this whole mac/PC thing has caused apple to jump over to PC hardware, which says alot. I did my 3D degree on Mac's and I do like them but PCs are my main love. I currently run a G5 with windows and MAC O/S 10.5 dual boot, they can even read each others file structure now (NTFS). One mouse button is the spawn of the devil the end lol..... Forgive me for seeming like a bobby-know-it-all, but dear chap... that is utter and complete bo1locks. 1) I currently run a G5 with windows and MAC O/S 10.5 dual boot - arf 2) apple to jump over to PC hardware -arf arf 3) NTFS - arf arf arf ;D OS-experts make me widdle my tweeds

Just thought I'd mention that this is gold plated, grade A drivel, but it is what 'everybody' says, so it MUST be true, mustn't it. well I been in IT proffesionaly for over ten years, have strong links to the publishing industry through my family (were macs are used heavily) and playing with computers since the zx80 came out back in the 80's so i'd say its an informed opinion as it happens. Whaddya do? Shelf stacker at Maplins? ;D

I did hardware, software, phone and network support for small businesses and home users back in the 90's before moving into the city to make oodles of money scaring people into letting me fix the millenium bug (because i'm old as were the effected computers that the youngsters couldnt "DOS? Whats that?") I went back into support and building custom computers for various things, I also look after all my mates personal computers and some of their business ones, including one family company of printer/publishers thats still full of bloody Macs.
I was taught computer skills at school on a bbc so ive grown up with computers pretty much as they were invented.
Thought i'd better add that i don't do it proffesionally anymore though cos computers do my head in, its just somethin i happen to be able to do.

As a die hard Mac owner since 1984 I say, nice work on the old imac carcass. I'm sure you didn't need to be told about the dangerous voltages on the crt there, and in any case you're still with us so you either took care or were lucky.
It's a shame that over the years the same old back and forth still goes on with mac vs PC. All I can add is my observations
I have found all my Macs to be far far more reliable than any PC that ever graced my office. They also earn there keep for longer as they get longer use. They cost far far less to support than PC's with much less hassle networking.
I have never found anything I couldn't do on a Mac that I could on a PC and Macs have been happy to read PC discs since day one.
For the windoistas, virtual PC etc were always crappy but a new Intel MacPro is (without overclocking or otherwise enhancing) the fastest way to run vista or xp.
A budget Mac however is always going to be a non starter. A Mac, any Mac is competing with the top end in each class of computer so a MacBook competes with a Sony Vio rather than a generic no brand PC.
Style is and always was part of the Mac brand, and style does cost. At the end of the day your PC in a Mac case looks cool, but it loks cool because it looks like a Mac.
Written on an Intel Core2Duo MacBook Pro.

i leant not to touch anything in the back of a crt telly many years ago, it looks even stranger now as i just added an old audioline car graphic equaliser with flashing LED's to it to boost the volume.
