lol at panniers - they are pretty bad like.
i've used throw over panniers, but don't trust them. whats to stop them fall off? i prefer to look of fixed ones too.
is the headgasget a pretty simple job then?

It's a two-stroke. i don't think it can get simpler, no valves, no chains, no belts nothing.
I think you have to undo the top engine mount to get the head off, I'm not sure what the engine hangs off tbh. It might need supporting underneath while your doing it. The spark plug may have to come out if you can't raise the head enough to clear the engine bolts/stub thingies (name escapes me right now) What else? have a look in the barrel while the head is off, look for deep score's in the barrel, deep pocket marks in the piston top, check if the ports have a radius on them. If your feeling frisky, whip off the exhaust and look up the port at the piston, that way you can check if there is any blowby on the piston skirt.

quite a lot happened recently. used it daily since september. had a few issues which i'll through shortly.
currently got a new chain and sproket on order as the current one is knackered and is slipping if you pull away too quickly or rev too much!
gah.
loads to do in an update though!

wibblepoo, i never did do that update. in Korea atm so can't really do it now. I put a new chain and rear sproket on which stopped that problem. I also put two new tyres on and had two rear punctures. Currently undecided as to whether to take it off the road and strip it down and rebuilt it? Its currently sat in the garage at home and will be used again in March.

if you have dislodged something in the exhaust then be careful its not changed the mixture making her run lean ...
I knew someone took the baffles out of a 2-stroke and cooked it within a few weeks...
just havea look at the plug when you get a chance to make sure the tips still a nice brown colour

michelin m45's ftw! black plugs indicate that A) your not trashing it enough B) it's running too rich

Nice one. Read Jennings' book.port and polish barrel. Re-shape/size ports if you're brave Can you get an expansion chamber exhaust for them? If not, graft one on from a different bike.

By running too much, is that too much two stroke oil in the mixture? mcbodge - port & polish barrel? How? Is it explained in the book? Expansion chamber exhaust - I'm not sure. You can get German performance exhausts for them? Whats an expansion chamber? Rob - the noob

Porting and polishing is to help the gas flow through the engine. Re-sizing and shaping the ports is equivalent to changing the valve timing. Basically, properly proportioned expansion chamber exhausts send timed pulses back and forth in the exhaust ,aiding cylinder filling and preventing un-burnt gas mix going straight through. If you read up on the basics of two strokes and then that Jennings book you'll find better answers. I bet there is a lot of information on MZ tuning. pigeonsnest.co.uk/stuff/mz/mzpage.htmlwww.rzt.de/produkte/41/40049/

Too rich = not enough air in or too much fuel.

If you have too much two stroke oil it will smoke excessively, it should smoke but not enough to cloud the town as you potter about. I meant rich running by the way of some previous owner putting in (or drilling out) a bigger main jet expansion pipe

I've not had a proper look yet. I'm worried about the corrosion and very seriously considering stripping it and sorting it out. But, that would mean having to stop talking about doing it, and actually doing it!
