well, some of you willl have seen some sneaky preveiw pics on the day I got it, others weren't so lucky. so I thought I'd best start a thread that I can lose its the first car I've ever brought of ebay, I got it after getting all deflated. I got chatting to a guy about a 1948 ford f-1 pick-up (dream vehicle for me) and took his number. but he wrote his number down wrong, ARRGH! after some efforts to get it straight and failing, i spied this and gave the bloke a ring. I won it on the friday, and trailered it back from leicester on the sunday with help from spacekadett. the car is a 1982 wartburg knight in the 353 body style, sometimes the 353 designation being used instead of knight. it was white and has been badly and hastily painted brown. while I like brown, i don't like that brown. really obscure (for anything other than what originally had it) paint will be applied before registering it . it was brought over from hungary for the warner brothers film Mrs Ratcliffe's revolution which starred Catherine "something about pre-politariate europa" Tate. never seen the film or even her sketch show, which means I have no commitments to keeping it anywhere near standard ;D ;D its unregistered so i have that little hurdle to get over, however the windscreen presents more of an obstacle to me. want some pics? look at those 4J steels, wow! photoshop anyone? positive camber?!?!?! no way.... cool feature^^ wartburg emblem embossed into the front rubberised carpet section more in a sec......

there's the 2 stroke 992cc engine in all its glory. job 1 was have a look at this little lot- the conneting pieces of the column change. its pretty easy, easier than the floor shift version! I've made it so all the gears are now "gettable" but its not right. suspension wise, this is the rear. semi trailing IRS with some convinient coilover mounts and new shoes!! this is the front end. double wishbone, discs and four pots. you can see the dual line master cylinder in that shot. had a look at fitting these today. just too much offset for me. you can see my laser tool shining up the wheel well and the very outer pice of the arch. if they were 8j maybe you could stretch some 165's on to get some clearance but they're only 7's. they look good, but comprimise the stance being out that far IMO. when it drops, the wishbone will push it out by another 15mm or more to boot but they do look teh secs!!!! end of updates for now, enjoy!

A bloke on the railway had an estate version of one of them - painted it red oxide and polished it........ Anyhooo, he ran out of petrol on the way into the carpark one day, so mixed up some lamp oil (paraffin), trico111 (solvent) and diesel and ran it on that. It started, ran, but put out so much smoke the carpark disappeared! Nevertheless, he drove across Norwich, topped up with 4-star and carried on as if nothing had happened. Bloody bombproof!

I know of a VERY sad RHD one of these - it's about two miles from my house. Quite a long way beyond rat-look and parked up outside many, many years ago just because the brakes needed some work.

Looking forward to watching this on Edd - it really is bonkers! Also wasn't expecting discs but then I guess by this late its not that suprising. Does it have a free-wheel? That would alse explain decent brakes. I find it amazing looking at the engine shot that it really is no different in layout to a pre-war DKW or something! I think you need to find a triple throat Weber for it

right, Q&A time, I don't know how to multi quote-sorry . yes it has a freewheel, but its switchable. ie. you don't have to use it! it has only got 7:1 compression though so not much engine braking for the moment. early ones were drum allround same as the 311 and 312. geuss they went to discs at the same time they rallied the 353w-rc- mid seventies? that made 90kw in the power stakes don't think that one is it rmad, but I don't know. black interior by the looks of it and the faked plate is wrong. the plate mine sports was knocked up by the film crew you see, so its unlikely they hung 2 false ID's on it. the red one on smoothies, haven't seen that one before its a water cooled polo based one tho. they facelifted and changed the running gear about '87 AFAIK. no it ain't plastic. its all steel construction on a separate perimeter chassis. trabants were duraplast body panels, made by the same people as the wartburg (IFA) I believe. PCD is 4x160, so this and trabant really I can get adapters at 380 euro a pair think i'll get some knocked up, hence trying to fit cookie cutters. the plan at the moment is to find a screen. I tried an e30 which is the right width, too high although it could be cut. completely wrong curvature to even think about grafting in an apperture. and yes, I would go as far as grafting in another screen apperture in if I could find a screen close enough. then get it mot' and reg'd.

can you not get a new screen shipped in through the owners club. i had two new trabbi windscreens sent over. maybe oldbus can help as he,s over there. anyways you're car is so ugly its cool. looking at you're pics wartburg didn't like to change much over the years. Ive got a stock 1956 311 here and the engine is exactly the same as in youres

yeah, I think i ought to join the owners club. if there's a laminate "competition" version, I'd certainly spring for that. they surely can't use a toughened 'screen in a rally car?!?! you've got a 311? FANTASTIC I spoke to a guy at the classic motor show about his tuned 311, apparently its pretty fast, quicker than most of the club wanted to go anyway ;D and while photobucket is open, have this- inspiration

you may be lucky on the screen. mine that came over were laminated which was a nice surprise as the original decided to shatter into millions of pieces.
car in the picture looks sooooo much better for being lowered.
tuned 311!!! mines going to be tuned.6.3 ltrs of v8 tuned, lol.
