I know it's not really retro, but after seeing some of the newer stuff posted lately I thought I'd start a small thread, and I haven't seen one on the road for some time. I've wanted one of these for a while, and seeing as my wife wanted something to run around I managed to persuade her that this was what she wanted and funnily enough this one was only 5 mins up the road. I knew the head gasket had gone before I went to look at it, but not one to be put off by such things that wasn't going to stop me. Anyway £120 (inc. tax and mot ) later and this was on the drive. The business end: Took the air intake off to find these little mess: To the right of the throttle body, in the bottom right hand corner of the pic, you can just make out a bit of rusty bracketry - for some reason this had been fitted to stop the throttle opening more than about 5mm! No wonder I couldn't get it to do more than 30 in 3rd! If there's any interest I'll add some more info and pics to the thread, if not I won't!

Definatly add more, these are one of those Retro yet modern cars IMO (plus mines also 92 and had no problems posting)
Hope you can sort the HG problems along with that throttle body! Looks a clean one, any plans? I sound like every other Metro owner but they are very fun, let it warm up then give it some stick, brilliant! Lower and induvidualise it and you'll be laughing!

Yep it's a 16v multi point. Already got the head gasket done, had toyed with the idea of putting a 1600 in (as I have one sat in a 416 that's going for scrap) but as it's for the mrs (partly ) I decided against it. Just took it for it's first proper run tonight and it goes very well as it is - brakes are curse word, but may just be where it's been stood, I'll stick some pads in the front and see how it improves. I think the pics make it look better than it is - it's solid but a bit crusty round the edges (rear arches, drivers door and wing, tailgate) but it's no big deal, the idea is it won't matter too much if SWMBO hits any hedges, kerbs, grass banks etc. Here's what greeted me when I took the rocker cover off: And a view inside one of the inlet ports: Took forever cleaning all that lot out of the head, inlet manifold etc. Running it with diesel oil in at the moment to try and flush all the crud out.

I like these, I'd love one to hoon around in. These Metros seem to divide people into either pathological hatred, or fanatical enthusiasm! Engine looks a right horror story! Well done on fixing it

My first car was a Rover Metro, only the 1.1. I always fancied a go in one with a bit more poke. I bet thats a right laugh when sorted.

Love these. Happy memories of My uncle Craids and My mate marks.
Really quite quick for what they are!! Suspension always puts me off owning one though....

Get some pics of the AX up - always liked those.
It goes quite well, just needs some better brakes up front, suspension is fine - as the man above says lower and individualise and away you go.Handles quite well as it is.

Body doesn't look too bad on the the pics and anyhoo £120 with tax and test has to be a bargain.

I grew up doing heads on k series so they're a piece of cake. Normally when they get this bad you tend to find the head or block is badly pitted where the coolant/water has been tracking across, but this was mint whn I got it cleaned up.Was well surprised as it's obviously been gone for some time, I think they just kept putting more and more water in without giving a second thought to where it might have been going I got nearly 10 litres out when I drained the oil(water mix)

Nice GTi, in one of the best colours IMO the grey, and a MPi type aswell.
£120 is a steal, your get double that if you were to put it straight on ebay as you got it. GTi metros value have rose due to a good few recent mag articals on stock and 1.8 conversion GTis which has pushed the up values where even rot boxes are going for £200+ on ebay.
I'm sure your aware but any one else, hgf is easy to do on one due to so many engine spares and now with the new better landrover k-series head gasket which should solve the weak gaskets.
Just keep it clean, they rust like buggers if left dirty and have loads of dirt traps under the archs and subframe mounts. Theres only one cure, expensive welding!
Enjoy your GTi. I've driven a 1.6 and its much faster than the 1.4 if your ever tempted to fit your 1.6 to it. I drive a 1.8 metro and it always brings a smile to your face.
