Not a lot happening with these old snotters at the moment. The Rover passed its MOT after a bit more welding: and a pair of new back tyres which I lobbed on myself, see here: retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=usetharch&action=display&thread=115874Anyway with that done a new bit of paper was issued and I was legal again after a few days of being un-MOT'd! Now then, the argenta was running again after having had the pez tank swilled out, but had u/s headlights! So to fix that i bought a little rocker switch off eBay for £2: I dismantled the steering column and wired it in, soldering the wires into the main loom and sealing the joints with self-amalgamating tape: I also bought a pukka ratchet crimp tool for attaching the terminals at the switch end. I fitted the switch in the centre console: I wired it in properly so it lights up when the lights are on: With a couple of other improvements (new engine temp sensor and other odds and sods) I reckoned we were good to go again so i risked a trip to work in it, against the advice of Mrs_Bol, but what does she know? The daft bat. Anyway, On the way to work the fuel pump jammed again! I managed to free it off by reversing the polarity on the pump and faffing about to dislodge whatever bit of much had blocked it. To my surprise that shifted it and I was so sure the problem had been cured (there cant possibly be any more curse word in there now) I continued to work rather than heading back to the workshop to get the Rover. On the way home it jammed AGAIN. This time it would not unblock, despite the best efforts of myself and the nice RAC man. So: Came home on the back of a lorry. Now i need another fuel pump (no. 4) and i'm going to have to admit defeat and fit one of these pre-filters as I cant think of anything else I can do to get any more muck out the system. This things been on the road 4 months, and i've had about 3 weeks of use out of it as there is always something wrong with it! Fuggin old cars

Fuggin nora Mr Bol, that Argenta must be becoming pretty major test of your tat fettling mojo. Top marks for sticking at it. I had a look into alternatives to the pricey pre-filters but haven't come up with much TBH. The only other way I can think of doing it is to feed a small tank from the main one using a low pressure fuel pump via a filter, along with a return, then feed the EFI pump off that. Basically the same way you'd do a surge tank install if putting EFI on and old croc. A low pressure pump won't get blocked by crud and the flow rate is low enough to use normal placca fuel filters. It's a fair bit of messing about though. I might have a little under-floor mounting surge tank and pump you can use if you want to try it. It came off my old turbo Prairie.

I think you should sell the Argenta to me! It's about time you gave it a new owner it doesn't seem to like you

That would be like admitting defeat MM! When I do get fed up of it i'll be in touch, but I wanna get some miles under its wheels first! I did hope to get it to a few shows this year, but i've missed that taget by about 1 million miles.

Thats intersting, I've had 3 pukka bosch pumps in bits and none of them had a strainer, they would be much more robust with one in I reckon.

Gr8 update as usual, the trials and tribulations hey. Can something not be fashioned with an old tea strainer/pair of old tights/wire wool or some such filtering device?

Why not something like this? Fairly universal, not too sure the shape of the intake on the Argenta's pump but the large surface area would tolerate a fair bit of chod before blocking up. Doesn't matter what type of filter it is really, as in the tank it's only at a differential of about 1psi on the intake. The pump should be able to handle that just fine. Certainly better than it's handling blocking up right now? Those filters run in at about $15 here. Google shows me some diesel vehicles use a similar one too. --Phil

Due to MAJOR LEAGUE CHEESAGE with the Argenta I decided to drag another of my old crocks into the garage last weekend, remember this from earlier on? Tried to stoke this up after a few months of sitting doing nowt, first problem was the fuel pump had jammed up again after I freed it off when I bought the thing. I know these pumps don't really appreciate being re-opened more than once so i bought a brand spanker off the bay (£35, presumably a chinese effort) and lobbed it in. After cleaning the plugs and some faffing about with jump leads it came to life, so i tried to drive it round into the shed but it ran out of pez almost straight away, meaning I had to push it in with the rover using an old tyre as a cushion between the two. Classy. The main probs with this car are from being parked for years, so sticky brakes and rotten tyres. I scored a sweet set of 4 not-very-old Michelin Energy Savers off the bay for £50 so they went on, then I went round the brakes freeing them off. To me surprise all the pistons, discs etc were 100% mint! so with a bit of red rubber grease and some in & out action the brakes were back in the game! I scrubbed the discs with the cup brush and bobbed it all back together (no pics as i forgot my camera like a flange) That had all been surprisingly easy and now we were ready to go for a drive, except now the ba$tard would not start. I had put some fresh petrol in, and it fired on one or two pots while cranking but not enough to stoke itself up and keep going. Checked for fuel flow - yes, theres pez coming through at a decent pressure Check for sparks - yes, we've got a nice big fat regular spark. Check for injector pulses - yes, they're seemingly doing the biz (as far as you can tell with a noid light) Check for damp in the ignition: All seems OK, gave everything a clean and a drink of WD-40 anyway. Check the plugs: all cleaned and gapped. Basically I pi$$ed about all evening till midnight trying to get this thing to start up again, it just won't go though. It almost runs, but won't. I only gave up when the starter motor became alarmingly slow then stopped engaging with the flywheel. For a moment I thought the engine had seized, but then i checked the starter motor - it was red hot. Today its cooled down and just clicks. The fuggin starter's burned itself out hasnt it. One step forward and two steps back! It was a runner with bad tyres and brakes, now the tyres and brakes are alright but its a non-runner and has a knackered starter. The mind boggles.

Did you try a bump start (I don't remember if it's auto or manual)?

Sadly its an auto, i reckon it would probably have fired up off a bump start if it had been a manual.

All I can think is timing might be an issue but there is no reason why it should be off :/

Yeah, when i had it running the other day it was mega sweet so I think the timings OK as i haven’t touched that, apart from checking for sparks escaping or jumping across into the wrong HT lead. I’m gonna get the starter off tonight and see if it can be revived or if I can find a cheap replacement – it seems to be the same as pretty much any 1.6-2.0 Fiat/Lancia of a similar age. Maybe get one off an INTEGRALE EVO II as a misguided ‘performance upgrade’.

Bol -each time I've needed to start mine (to shift it out of the way usually) it exhibits the exact same symptoms. I've found that flooring the throttle & holding it there (- like a flooded carb), gets it to fire on 2 ,then 3, then 4 within 30 seconds or so. Always feels like it wants to go -but won't ; till it struggles into life. Once warmed through, its fine thereafter -till the next ' longterm layup'. A week or so -no issues. Autos can be a pig -sometimes.

Thats jolly interesting, cheers biqqle. It does seem like theres a knack to it. Something else I have noticed is if the battery is even ‘5%’ discharged, you can forget it! It will spin and spin without hint of a fire. But if you stick a jump lead on to another battery it will fire straight up first click.
I suspect it just hates sitting about, i reckon it will be fine if it ever gets taken for a few long blasts.

The ONLY car I have the becomes all temperamental after it's been sat is the Cherry Europe. That can be a right PITA to get started. Once you've got it fired up it'll be fine thereafter. Bleedin' Italian cars, eh?
