Bit of a breakthrough tonight, THE ROVER LIVES!!! I tried and failed to repair the radiator unfortunately, 3 different types of glue got me nowhere at all and my last resort was a radiator repairing geezer in Stoke. He said 'bring it in, i might be able to do something' and wonder of wonders, he fitted a whole new (s/h) end cap from a dead radiator!!! Pressure tested it and what have you as well, all for £20. What a lifesaver. So tonight I went down the garage and lobbed it on. i had already connected up all the pipes, wires and so on and stoked it up, so I knew it would go, but i'd not been able to run it for any length of time due to no coolant. anyway after some farting around, the car was 100% on the button again. I am pleased to say that the engine sounds absolutely cracking, keeps a steady temp and does not splutter or misbehave in any way. Also, so far no leaks! In other news I have fitted a new headlight to replace the cracked one (£12 delivered off the bay) and had a fiddle with the rear calipers which to my surprise has revived the handbrake, hopefully I will get away witholut replacing the calipers, CASHBACK! I took the Rover for a short blezz tonight, and remembered why i like it so much, its freakin class to drive. Unfortunatley its taken me so long to do the engine that the MOT has run out, so i need to tackle that before I can finally start caning it up and down the A50. Anyone wanna buy a Xsara HDi?

Always thought the K-series was a 'good' looking engine for some reason. Regardless, great stuff! Glad to see it's going again

The k is a good looking engine, and it isn't alone - that's a T-series. ;D
Great to see that it's running again - it feels really good when a swapped engine bursts into life.

You have no idea how tempting that is! Out of interest, what sort of money would you be looking for it? I'd like about £700 or so with a years ticket but likely no tax (runs out end of Nov). Why so cheap? I would have thought that it would be worth quite a bit more, seeing as it's structurally sound and capable of daily use.

Took the Rover in for an MOT yesterday: It Passed!!!! Unfortunately: It boiled up like a mutha during the emissions test. Thats not the end of the world like, as I quickly established the reason - a duff thermo-switch in my new radiator end houising. More annoying is that oil absolutely pisses out the bottom of the bellhousing. The rear crank seal on my lovely new engine must be b0rked!!!! Thats about the only seal i didnt change, Unbelievable. So I still cant use this car, now I have to take the gearbox back out and replace the f**king seal (another £40 from Rimming Bros). I did rag it down to Derby and back on Friday though and it was freakin ace, so I havent lost my rag with it yet. Now its a usable MOT'd car with an oil leak, not a project with a knackered engine and no ticket.

Might you try one of those glops that allegedly swell the seals? Might work..... a bit.....enable you to drive it to rebuild your enthusiasm?
Or some stp - just in case.

I've already got it in pieces, it seems the problem is in fact down to my new aftermarket sump gasket being of frankly poor design, meaning I have wasted £40 on needlessly buying another crank seal! BA$TARDS. Pics and explanation soon.

B0llix, thanks so much for sharing your car life with us all. I'm a mega lurker on here but love coming on every so often and seeing what tasty treats the RR folks are playing with. I started reading your thread at work around lunchtime today and just finished off the last couple of pages at home now. To have the space, time and ability to do what you do is a bit of a man-dream of mine. All the cars are interesting in some way (maybe apart from the Xsara?) especially as most "normal" folk would screw their face up in horror that someone would choose to work on and drive such "old and therefore rubbish" cars. But we ain't quite normal The Rover especially speaks to me as I've had a couple myself. First was a red 1993 214Si which ended up with Coupe bumpers, turbo (chunky 15" 6 spoke) alloys and a bit of a noisy exhaust. I was young! Second was a 420 GSi Turbo which ended up with 240bhp thanks to a Nissan S14 turbo, Pulsar GTiR intercooler and several other bobs and bits. Sold it when I moved to Germany in the middle of 2008 and still miss it terribly. Now own a white '98 620 diesel which just keeps going. Your photos of the space Rover left us between the front and rear of the T series in the R8 engine bay really brought back some cold, frustrating and knuckle-skinning memories (as did the pic of the coolant peeing out the bottom of the car!) and again thanks for sharing that and everything else. Cracking job with all the cars and really top work taking so many photos and taking the time to share everything on here. I'll be keeping an eye on this thread as I feel it just won't end Thanks again and keep up the great work, Leo ETA: Great to hear you mention Rovertech too as that was my home during my entire 420 turbo experience (and before, right back to when the forum started in 2003ish) and if you care enough you can find quite a bit of info on there about these cars including my old one)

How do you get the plunger out of a seized up m/cyl? Use a grease gun and pump it full of grease: pops out and covers everything in grease!

Alright gang, lets have a short and uninteresting update. So last time the Rover was up and running again, but wazzing oil out the bottom of the bellhousing. So, back it came into the garage: I took the gearbox out again (bit of a dab hand at that now, only takes an hour or so) And got the flywheel off again: Turns out the problem was not the crank seal (annoying asd I had just spent £40 on a new one anyway) but the sump gasket. The crank seal is mounted in a placca housing that bolts on the back of the block. The sump gasket seals against the bottom of this housing, so that oil on the inside of the seal cannot run down the inner face of the plastic and escape!!! Heres the original Rover gasket, it has a sort of tongue (on the shortest side of the gasket) that seals agains the crank seal housing: My new motor factor gasket did not have that, but it still went on perfectly so I had no reason to suspect problems when I fitted it. ANYWAY what to do now? The proper answer is a new Rover OEM gasket, but I didnt want to take the sump off again and throw yet more money at it. So, I resorted to hylomar and weetabix packet: The hylomar is in the area where the tongue thing is missing from the sump gasket I made a 'tongue' of my own to slot in under the crank seal and put loads of hylomar in to glue it in place/seal it all up. Nowt to lose really, if it works then great, if not, its a new sump gasket. Anyway, I put it all together and put the gearbox back in. I am pleased to report, that itas 100% oil tight. If it does start leaking, a new sump gasket will cure it properly, with no harm done. Heres the rover on commuter duty: And here is the 'money shot' Not a drop of oil!!!! I have now done 100miles/day in it for 3 weeks with no splats on the driveway and NO PROBLEMS. I'm getting 36mpg average and Karma seems to have been restored. I have even bought a couple of M+S tyres for the front to boost my chances of getting to work in the curse word weather, thats a vote of confidence if ever there was one. The new engine does burn a little oil i must admit, its nowt like the old one, but its still a pint or so every 1000 miles, shame that but there you are. If i was a real headbanger i'd pull the head off again and renew the stem seals, but you've gotta draw the line somewhere. Its now a far healthier car than it has been in all the time i've had it, i'm just gonna drive it and enjoy the fact that i've had it completely to bits and reassembled it into a reliable car (touch wood). Now what? Well, i was browsing the 'for sales' on here and my eye was drawn to the plight of an old Cavalier (2.0 8v Auto) that no-one was buying, despite only being £200 or so. the head gasket was on its way out and the scrapyard beckoned. My Mrs was out one evening so it seemed opportune to get a train up to manchester and have a look, without having to lie or answer a series of searching/slightly embarrassing questions. The car looked tidy but the head gasket was defo toast. However I knew that before I set off so, I decided to have a crack at extending its life a bit, we agreed on £160 and a promise to do somethign constructive rather than just weigh it in, and I got it trucked back to Crewe for £40 thanks to SHIPLY. When it got back to base I was pleasantly suprised by the condition. One wheelarch is a tad crunchy: Not too bad though, knowing what these can be like. It seems to be in its original paint all over and I suspect will come up really nice with a machine pollish. Anyway this week I brought it into the garage: Very straightforward to work on these old things! Even with slow semi-frozen fingers I had it to bits in a couple of hours: The Cavalier ran well, but used water and steamed out the exhaust. Once it was in pieces it was clear that the old HG had just died of old age, possibly hastened by a weak antifreze mix. The gasket had just rotted away next to no.4 and the metal seal ring had nothing to 'bite into'. I'm fairly optimistic of geting away without a head skim, but i'm gonna clean everything up tomorrow and inspect it so i will know then. My new favourite car parts shop, Smithsons of Stoke, ahd a full gasket set on the shelf for £12!!!! I will renew all the gaskets + probably the stem seals, also got a new cam belt, new head bolts and of course some obligatory fresh oil! Got a full day of low-temperature garage fun lined up tomorrow so with a bit of luck i'll get it back together, fingers crossed!!!

A weetabix gasket! What no jordans cranberry muesli this month?
I heard the mk3 Cav is a sorted motor as they'd been building it for flippin ages by then point they built yours. It sticks in my head as John Cleland ran one of these pretty successfully in the BTCC. I'm pretty sure his wasn't an auto though.
