You sure can, it failed the test! Clearly someone uncrossed their fingers during the test. Not on owt major though - headlamp alignment and emissions. The MOT guy said he would sort the lights himself and give the carb a tweak to get the emissions under control. I lokoed in the haynes though and the carb does not have a mixture screw, its all set by means of the carb jets, so I think his options are limited for tweaking the mixture. Anyway I'll let him find that out himself and see what he comes up with! If he performs some magic on it, hopefully i'll have a green certificate later on today. If not i'll start looking for a carb overhaul kit

it must be running really bad :S as pre-cat emission tests have really high limits. I was sure my micra was over fueling (from the amount of backfiring it did ) but wizzed through the emissions

After some fannying about with the 'hill holder' gizmo which kept locking the brakes on on the rollers, this car passed its MOT at last on Thursday. I don't know what he did to the emissions, reckoned he just turned the mixture down a bit? I don't know but it runs great and the emissions slip on the MOT shows a pass so all's good. Anyway here it is in all its completed glory: Its so long since this thing entered the garage I cant believe it is 'done'. To celebrate, I lobbed a new cambelt on the Volvo and bought this: A very smart, MOT'd and quite rare early Rover 214, bought for £60 due to a broken timing belt. Next! I also found when undoing the crankshaft pulley nut on the volvo, that the tired clutch on there can easily be 'slipped' by hand with the ait of a 3-ft breaker bar so thats the next job on the fleet, can't have a tired clutch on your A-frame dragger can you. I bought a new clutch off eBay ages ago for £40 so Mon and tuesday night are spoken for already. My mojo seems to have come back with a vengeance now that this Subaru is finished so watch this space for more garage tatting.

I was just about to scorn you for buying that 214, until I saw the price! Actually, looks quite a nice car in that colour. I bet if you sort those bumpers it will look really nice all waxed up.

Nice to see a 214 that hasn't suffered from the rotten rear arches you usually see them with! Can't go far wrong if you only paid £60 for it.

Those Rovers were alright, my mate had one and totally behaved, which all went wrong when it got crashed and replaced with a 214 bubble. Good the Subaru is all sorted and mojo is too, nice one.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Its a 16 single point injection. I know this cause Xbol picked up a 16v engine from me to use as spares!
Looks in good shape, great colour too!

Yo, plenty of tatting happeingin in the last couple of nights. Took the Rover back to the garage for an investigation. I bought it with a broken cambelt, so i decided to lob on a new belt and try to start it, just to see what happened basically. On investigation I found the cambelt was intact, and nice and tight so could only surmise that it had lost some teeth. Sure enough: Incidentally, how do you undo a crankshaft pulley nut when you've no cambelt? That had me flummoxed for a while. had to lock the crank by sticking a bolt in the flywheel teeth, not ideal but it didnt seem to do any damage. Anyway after some faffing I got the new belt on and timed up. I tried to start it, the engine spun over like a mutha suggesting it had no compression at all. Ah well! Off with its head! Quite good engine access on these, fairly easy to work on. I left the inlet and exhaust manifolds as intact as possible and just unbolted them from the head, leaving most of the wires and pipes connected. Took a couple of hours to get everything dismantled: Off with the cam cover: Annoyingly the head is bolted on with ghey TORX bolts, a socket for which i don't own, so I had to stop work there. I have got one now though and will remove the head tonight. I have also ordered a new HG set off the bay with new bolts and steel dowels, lovely job! I cant wait to bring this little buzz box back to life. L8RZ
