well if that is really the case, I feel rather privalidged to be able to give this car a new lease of life! There are more Estelles left than Rapids. I personally prefer them left standard which obviously goes against what RR is about. However, the fact that you are keeping this on the road and obviously have loads of enthusiasm for it makes me very happy indeed, too many of these cars have been thrown away. I refuse to scrap these cars now, which has meant my collection of "really ought to be scrapped if I was normal" Skodas has increased somewhat! ;D

well then time for a little update! Some of you may have seen my wheels and tyres in the general section, for those who didn't and to keep the thread up to date here is some more pics! new wheels compaired to old rears front front wheels need machining to clear hubs so they didn't fit.... ass! well time for some new tyres almost legal, just need to flair the arches and job is a good-un I am very happy with the look, once the car is repainted and the wheels are re-ferbed and the spoiler is on i think it will look different and very cool! ta

Great Looking car there bud, nice to see another one saved, that car looks really clean. Agree with all the others , put the bumpers back on. incidentally i woul dsuggest you take the breather pipe off the carb and vent the rocker to atmoshere via a longish hose down to the bottom. don't forget to block the carb inlet pipe. that way you don't end up clogging your carb with oily waste. I did on my 105 and it works a lot better. If you drop the front more than a few inches you will need to put bushes on the roll bar mounts otherwise it will foul the cross beam under load. Pics of mine somewhere else on this thread. more info can be found at www.southcoastskoda.com , I'm on there as dodgy-alan.

This engine will not be in here to long (turbo lump to go in when it is finished!)
and yeah..... i wondered what the clunking was! I have taken it off for the moment while i sort out a different installation solution!!!!
And i am very happy with the condition.. there are a few car park scrapes on the body, but there is pritty much NO rust anywhere! its only got 30k on the clock, and 10 of them where done by the previous owner last year!!!!!!!!!!!

although I think the bumperless look is better... you can't make that statement if you haven't seen the crash damage difference. bumpers do NOT move when hit, even hard. without them there is no protection in front or behind where the subframe ends and your panels will be destroyed. I must admit, I have seen the damage on another forum, and i do agree actually about that (dispite my slightly flippant statement! the problem is the stock bumper look pooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo and i don't like them at all! I was wondering though about something different, either a wrap around bumper from a different model/aftermarket, or maybe some form of bump bit fitted to the end of the bumper hangers?!?! may help a bit!

I've always liked the look of the front of these without bumpers. I had one years ago when I still lived with my parents and wanted to run it without bumpers but my mum and dad wouldnt let me! Keep hold of the bumpers, you can always put them back on if you get bored and fancy a change...

I've just read all six pages. Very interesting car. I love the current stance. Bumperless for the win. It looks miles better. I feel inclined to post pictures of my old beastie... I got around the rear fog light issue by mounting it into the rear panel... *I miss that car. Keep up the good progress....and join the Skoda Owners Club!

Definately bumperless is better! I had a 120LSE (4-speed) about 14 years ago, took the bumpers off that, looked so much better! Was a lot quicker than you'd expect too.
You just don't see these cars anymore, i started with a X-reg 120L, a C-reg 120LSE, an F-reg 130LSE & a E-reg 130GL (all Estelles). I wish i still had them, the 130LSE was the one & only car i bought from a main dealer back in 1995 & lasted me all of 6 weeks before i had a slight altercation with a Ducati motorbike!!
There used to be a maroon coloured Rapid around here (Lincoln) that had been re-engined, haven't seen it for a few years though.

thanks for the comments everyone..
having spoken to my pet skoda guru, the plan has changed....
I wanted to turbo a 135 engine and get 150 bhp, and mate to stock skoda box, but my man Jim says that when he rallyied estelles, he had a 120 bhp engine, and used to rate the boxes at 300 miles before they needed a full rebuild!
I am not prepared to live with that, so the plan is now to either just build the 135 up as a high comp 136 and run that, or what is more likely is that i will fit a different engine and gear box, like an audi 80 or something like that!

well a bit of an update.. It has been a while and I have been rather idle, but after the trip to the retro show last month and the ace cafe on wednesday, I have got some renewed enthusiasm. I can't exactly remember where we got to, so here is a little update of recent things. - Bought a turbo off ebay that was FUNKED - Decided that a turbo motor on stock gear box would not work due to gearbox lifespan issues - Purchased a 136 gearbox and full rear suspension - Standard motor is too smokey too leave in. Any ideas you skoda gurus out there, it smokes fairly badly all the time? - got a birdbath spoiler that was cut up by the previous owner so have started to repair, but it needs more work! - started to strip the interior - Not much rust.... but some..... - the surface rust is fine, but the seam is a little worring - looks like we have had a water leak the above photo shows water traped between the sound dedening and the floor.... urm... not good! I am going to need to investigate this further, as the floor pan on this side looks to be domed in the middle... not good! finally.... one of the details I love about this car... the sunroof! Anyway a few more things to add later... just cooking dinner atm.... All you skoda peeps out there, I am now on the look out for parts... list to follow!!!! Thanks Lewis

Right been a while.... again But I have been doing a bit of work, and now I have a deadline (and some money) to get this car on the road. I have a spare engine and box etc, but for the time being I will be staying the standard engine. The sudden kick up the bum to get ths working has come from SWMBO. She got banned from driving for 12 months about 8 years ago, moved to london and never bothered retaking the test. Times change (kids etc) and she has started to relearn. Well she has been getting on well and needs some wheel time. I can't get her on the daily (company car) so it was either get her a banger, or get the estelle running. To that end, I will be sorting a few little bits out, getting it MOTd, getting her driving, then once she has passed, I will get her a car of her own, and take the estelle to my parents house to do a full spray and overhall with new lump and suspension. So... there was some surface rust in the passenger foot well due to a leak (bunged up drain holes) So that got sanded and painted The gear shift is sloppy, so that got some treatment. It turns out a lot of the play is due to the ball at the bottom of the stick being worn. That ball is sandwiched between two plates, so i took the top plate off and skimmed 1 mm off the bottom and bolted it back together. Much better now, and i also took 2 inches off the stick. Nice!

So there were a couple of dings at the back So a hammer, some filler and a little paint sorted that and then I put the rear anel back on Final bit. I have cut the front springs (which are fine) but now I don't have much front suspension travel. Anyone see a problem with this at MOT time? Thanks

Well lots of work today, but no pictures (that means i actually did some propper hard work)
I took the rear suspension apart to sort out a few little bits. I had cut the rear springs, and they were dislocating at full droop, so i modified the droop loops that the car has to reduce the droop and stop the springs coming loose.
I sorted the fog light out. The car had a set of bolt on fogs that i didn't like. So i had re-wired one of the reverse lights, but couldn't find a red enough bulb. So i cut the red lense out of one of the fogs and stuck it behind the clear reverse lense.
I fitted new wiper blades, and re-sprayed the front grill and wiper arms.
A bit more paint went onto a door that was a bit scrapped.
I have had a fiddle with the horn, which still won't work properly. the indicator stalk is a bit knackered so i fiddled with that.
The interior should be going back in tomorrow and a bit of wiring.
The car won't look much different after all of this, but i need it on the road.
I am going to save some cash and do a full spray next summer (if we have one!)
I will try and get some pictures tomorrow of the work!
Wish me luck for friday!

Just to keep this up to date, It failed it's MOT before Christmas on steering rack gator, slight issue with the springs, wobbly wheel bearing and emissions (not a supprise).
Its now up on stands waiting a total rebuild, which is what I had always planned to do anyway...
ho hum....
onwards and upwards (well sideways maybe!)

Right, just to drag this back up from god knows what page.
Got some mojo and time back again so i have decided enough of the mincing about, and to get on and get some concerted work done.
I have pulled the rear slam panel back off, unhooked all the ancillaries and will pull the engine in the next coulpe of days, then pull the box and suspension in preparation for the 136 back end.
That has been cleaned and painted up in my shed, and ready to go.
I will pull the front end out as well just to clean and sort the trunions/kingpins out (they are a bit rattley)
I promise to have this done at some point before i go completely grey!

Sit down ...Have a well earned cuppa then take stock of what is left to be done ....Have you made a choice on an engine yet?..For ease and quickness of getting it back on the road why not opt for a felicia motor? you could buy a complete car so you know the motor is good, rip it out and sell any other servicable parts on..The manifolds would be the costly items but Jorily had an inlet and exhaust listed new if no 2nd hand ones can be obtained,if you went that way then a 28/36DCD weber or 32/36DGAV are good carbs to fit and they are easy to adapt as they have the same stud pattern as the jikov ..Happy to mail you pics and info on stuff you need to swap if you decide to go that way ;D..Good luck and keep the faith!!

Yay for mojo Lewis. Glad to see you're getting some work done on this, I've just read the whole thread and I wouldn't be surprised if you lost interest! Looks good though, I like the bumperless look and the wheels rock. Good save that man
