Wow! Read about this this morning and you had the repair panel on but trips where going to be cancelled! Check at lunchtime and you already have it booked into the paintshop!
Horrendous bad luck but major kudos to you for not torching the thing in a fit of rage and getting it sorted! Wish I could make RR08 as I really want to see this van in the flesh!

Needs a button on it like the old T style shifters have, or a lock out switch under the seat (seat belt light switch?)
|
|
Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

ok, purely mechanial device, a button on the end of your shifter, pushes a rod that runs through it with a bent end on it poking through a slot which engages in a quadrant and stops the lever moving unless the button is pushed, heres my highly detailed fully to scale drawing of said device (patents pending)

As soon as i´ve got it back together i´ll try and find some time and get something made. I thought i´d get away without it but after yesterday i´ve changed my mind.

I'm sure it can be improved or modified or adapted or whatever, I went for simple and easy to make.

Shyte! I've not been keeping up to date with this one. Tragic! A rather large helping of respect for just getting stuck in to sort it out.
If it makes you feel better, Rolls-Royces have a gear selector that's VERY easy to move. I had a bloke adjusting the steering on one I was taking a shot of and he knocked the lever - he didn't half brick it when it started driving off with him standing outside! Everyone seems to be coming up with top suggestions here - or fit a damned good handbrake when upgrading the stoppers?

Cheers Ian, glad to hear i´m not the only idiot out there..... ;D The van has a decent handbrake, the handle is not connected up yet as it fits to the engine cowling and i didn´t want to close it all in until the electrics were working properly. I managed to get the van back to the sprayers yesterday evening with a bit of luck i´ll be back on track by the weekend.

Maybe the mechanishm from a handbrake? Great idea Tim, had a play around with some Scorpio bits yesterday and as soon as i´ve got the van back together i´ll have a play and see what i can come up with. Cheers, Dave

Bummer. Not good. Glad to see you're well into the repair though, sh!t happens as you said.
Why oh why didn't I say something when I saw your shifter setup - I was going to say that you needed a locking mechanism or it might knock into gear accidentally.
Have a look at the auto shifter on the scorpio - that will have some kind of locker under the stick. I'd be copying that idea.

Cheers Matt,
my own fault mate. I had the Scorpio gearselector in bits before i started as i wasn´t happy with the set up the way it was, but there was just no way to integrate any of it.
I went round the scrappys on the look out for anything i could adapt but came away empty handed, and that doesn´t happen very often.
I think i´ve found a way how to do it now (surprising what an accident can do for your motivation!) and will have a go at sorting it out before we come over to Santa Pod.

looking at popup's idea.. could you not modify some kind of bike brake mechanism.. so rather than pushing something in.. you pull it towards you.. it pulls a pin out of a slot/hole which then allows you to move the lever.. release and the pin re-ingages in new slot ?? just thinking as they're usually designed to be adjustable and mount onto a bar.. they're pre-sprung, you can adjust them and then all you'd need to do is get the cable length right.. plus you can get some really nice shiny alloy ones if you want them to look nice if you made the pin a bit like the attached (very shonky) drawing should be easy enough to do and fairly discrete.. run it along the back of the shifter... the locking plate would be mounted so that the thinnest side would be facing you.. the end of the pin closest to the lever would have contact with the spring inside the pin mount at all times to ensure that the pin stays in the locking plate.. but there should be enough room in the pin mount to pull the pin far enough in to disengage.. hope this makes sense..

Thanks for that Posam,
definately makes sense mate, that´s not a bad idea too.
The only thing that would put me off a bit is that I don´t think a bike handle would look quite right.
I´d really like to keep it looking as original as possible with the mechanics hidden away, but your idea of pulling instead of pushing might work out well with another idea that I have.
Cheers... ;D

Any scope for fitting something that forces you to lift the whole lever towards you to move it? Quick bit of fab might allow you to cobble up something small just to keep it locked in Park.

Some Bedford Midis (in Germany?) and Toyota Previas had auto boxes with a column shift, could something be adapted from one of them to fit to your original shifter?

OB i was gutted for u when i saw the bump, your a total legend for getting it sorted in super quick time, i crashed my mini after 3 days of driving, it stayed bent and broken for nearly 2 years after that, you get to fixinng yours after half a day!! i really hope the paint comes out well and everyone forgets the damage was ever there.
the new van is brilliant, cant wait for yu to crack on with that but as yu say theres a bit of a backlog building and we don't wanna rush you haha.
keep up the good stuff mate, looking forward to seeing the pod pics, just wish i could make it down to see the van for real.

Hi Ian, i tried using the old reverse linkage and movement (lift and up, if you get what i mean) but i had to weld all that lot up to get the linkage moving in the right direction. Some Bedford Midis (in Germany?) and Toyota Previas had auto boxes with a column shift, could something be adapted from one of them to fit to your original shifter? Thanks mate, thanks to all the good ideas coming up here i think i´ve found a way to sort it out. Cheers Tim, i know exactly how you felt. if i hadn´t have got stuck straight in i´d have just thrown everything in the corner, gone and had a couple of beers and ignored it for a while, but i didn´t want to let my lads down as i´ve promised them one or two trips out this year. Shame you can´t make it to Santa Pod, i´ll see you at RR08 (if i haven´t broken it again by then!)
