HI, Well, I reckon I found this forum about two weeks ago and have since read about 20 pages of readers cars!! Some really, realy cool cars in there. I now have a really bad urge to go and buy another Volvo 240, put wide steelies on it, chop the springs and transplant in a turbo diesel engine... There is somethong so much cooler about an old but honest car.. So I thought i'd do my bit and put mine up my current banger on here to guarantee its virtual immortality seeing as its deteriorating faster than an epileptic lepper in real life!! I've had it for about 5 years now and between this one and a few Pug 405 td's have been through the possibilities of what you can do to the old XUD engines... It might not be qualifyingly old, but it still is a bit different, and surprises a few of the new 'blob' cars when I need it to. PICS!! Its got a few mods to the engine!! It's an engine from a 405 originally, rebuilt and fitted with a Garrett GT2052V (VNT) turbo from an Audi A6. Its probably got the longest exhaust manifold I have ever seen! 306 16v suspension, berlingo brakes with 406 master cylinder, Xantia inlet manifold, Mercedes 300d injectors, Audi TT intercooler, 405 rad, parts of an old Montego in the injection pump and various other bits of car that werent originally supposed to be in there!! Goes really well and it always smells of chips! I am just at the point of getting something else now though. E30 2.0, Volvo 240, Carlton GSI, early RX7 or Supra MA71. All within the budget, but what I really would like is an old, cool turbo diesel that I can tune the nuts off and run around in for almost free! ;D Any suggestions?

Cor, that must be nippy!
As for suggestions - Citroen CX DTR to keep it French. Volvo 240 as you suggest for something different. W123 Merc is another option - not sure we got a TD here (US market only?) but no reason why one couldn't be built!

Wow nice mods... what kind of performance does that give? I've never driven one but I gather the 405 TD's aren't exactly slow in the first place....
If you didn't know the 240 came fitted with the VW 6 cylinder diesel lump in European markets. Might be possible to transplant a D24T out of a 700/900 series into one? I've also seen Nissan TD conversions in Volvos

I like that, pondered potential of these before. can get a euro look quite nicely, and i they didn't have sensible suspension, i might have chased one before now.

Really interesting project there smallturbo - what sort of power is it making, and what was it before. This is the sort of car the greenies should be encouraging...can making a new Prius and shipping around the world really be better for the environment that stuffing an old motor full of recycled bits and running it on chip fat?
Heroic efforts!

How are you controlling the VNT?

Thanks for the comments! Yeah, I like it when people see the smoke out of the back of the ZX and it whistling and farting away, they assume its a environmental catastrophe, then I can tell them its a hell of alot greener than their stupid lexus rx!! Idiots! Those prius still only manage an equivalent MPG in the 40's as well, The ZX manages that! VNT is mounted on a custom built monster of a manifold, which interestingly does not really increase lag. Custom downpipe mated to new-ish standard system. Manifold took ages mainly because of having to do things in this sort of a fashion, elbow grease all the way!!> ETC!!! Oh well, I learned to weld during all that! Cant find any pics of the finished manifold, maybe I was too embarassed to take any pics at the time!! Its a pig on the outside but baby smooth on the inside.. Tip of the day was don't scrimp on cheap hacksaw blades and drill bits!! The VNT is controlled by just a boost actuator at the moment. The VNT internals have been flipped over so oil is going the right way. The actuator opens the vanes once a certain boost pressure has been met. I can set the start point of the vanes by changing actuator ord length. I was using another (better) system that I will need to re-engineer in the next few weeks which involved the throttle arm pulling the vanes closed, then the actuator opening them at boost. This gives a much better response, but the last cable system I made was curse word and broke due to rubbing. I'll post up pics of what I mean once its done. It goes very well, standard 92bhp, not sure what this has got but I'd hazard a guess around 140bhp and about 250Lb/ft. Its faster than a 306 Rallye above 1st gear., by quite a bit. Pump has been modified for increased rpm, increased max fuelling, static timing increased etc. Was running an 11mm plunger and delivery nozzles from the Prima pump but there was a problem with pre-injection. Should have that sorted at christamas now. Just using the Prima throttle springs in there at the moment. VOLVO 240!!! Yeah the VW 6cyl goes in from the 940!! Could get an easy 200BHP/300ff/lb from that one and run about for free. Would have to be a saloon, and i'd love to get a really old one, the one with the round front lights. Merc 300d w124 is also on the list, fitted with an OM606 engine from a 98-99 E300TD (the last and best of the TD's) but would be more pricey and *I* think less cool than an OVLOV. Lowered on the GLT alloys, with spacers, or even some split rims and painted black. Hers my old one: LOW isnt it? Thats because its got 205 litres of diesel in the back seat and 205 litres in the boot!!! ;D ;D ;D Rusty old sod with no fins left in the rad, and a hole in the boot that sucked in the exhaust. So you were either roasting with the windows up, overheating the engine with the internal fan on cold, or getting CO poisioning with the windows down. I went for a slight mix of all 3 for balance! One like this would be a good starting point: Wheels a bit too big, but nice stance: Or, best of both worlds, OM606 in Volvo 240?!!

Anyone who has to cut holes using this method deserves a lot of respect! Its not drilling the multiple holes that takes forever but the filing afterwards. Argghhhh!!! Not my kind of car but after all that effort you frickin' well deserve it to be fast!

Y282,
You can use the xantia inlet manifold, but not the zx standard intercooler as it has one end tank with a flat oval flange with o-ring to bolt to the standard manifold. I have seen zx's fitted with the whole xantia front mount system, quite a bit of chopping to make it fit as its tall and its not a great IC anyway.
On my car the front mount required a lot of bumper cutting to make it fit, but other than that its just pipe runs. The manifold itself bolts straight on. Hope that helps and good luck!

cheers for the advice LT, I'm looking forward to getting a FM fitted. trying to keep it loking as original at the front as possible, it's got the original plain black sloping bumper so may have to have it stick out bottom, boso oil cooler style a bit. doest the intercooler remount make any performance gains as such, or am i just doing it for the looks?

Hehe, boso style would look, um different on a zx i think! but if you paint the IC black its amazing what you don't notice..
The front mount makes a huge difference. The most noticeable is after a hard pull, then go down the gears or whatever. When you get back on the gas with the front mount it is alot crisper and takes off again alot quicker. Lots to do with heat soak on the top mount though which only really works once you get above a certain speed. I actually did have a standard zx cooler front mounted for a while with everything else standard. I did it by taking the pipe end tank off another spare IC I had to make one with pipe ends on both tanks. So I had an almost direct comparison of FMIC vs TMIC. Definately worth doing.

now THAT's what i wanted to hear. i always suspected it would help, but it'll be good to actually see it.
it's already got 205 1.9 gti wheels on it that i'm thinking of spraying a really pale high gloss grey (the car's dark blue, rubbing strips removed) and the only other real exterior/mods i want to do are to drop it a fair bit at the front (the back already looks lower than the front) and get one of the tailgate top spoilers off a volcane for it.
surprised more people havent caught on to them tbh, it's a good alternative to the 306, different styling, cheaper and surprisingly quick. oh and it has no rust on it anywhere!

User on 205GTIdrivers has a 205GTI and fitted the XU7DT engine - plus a few additional mods and it's quite quick. Shed loads of torque, I'll dig out a review of it it you want. My brother had a 1.9TD ZX, didn't last more than 3 weeks!

sh*****************************t! hope he was alright!
the zxtd is a really good car to smoke round in tho. if you can find that review i'd be very interested to read it. i'm trying to get as much info on modding that engine on a budget as possible.

sh*****************************t! hope he was alright! A bit shaken but learn't not to take those bends at that speed again. Think he was more gutted that he borrowed the money for the car and then watched it in a corner of the drive for 3 years; until we angle grinded into quarters and took it to the dump! I think the engine is in a garage somewhere at my folks.
