INF104 states -
Vehicles made before 1 January 1973 may display traditional ’black and white’ number plates (for example, white, silver or grey characters on a black plate).
A Q plate infers a vehicle with a date of manufacture that cannot be determined - The date of actual registration having no relation to the date of manufacture.
The date of manufacture on my Litton being noted as *unknown* first registered 1993
Therefore Q's can in the most part quite legally run their prefix style pre 2001 plates in a style from any age era.

www.mot-testing.service.gov.uk/documents/manuals/class3457/index.htmlCorrect me if I am wrong but... 0.1 Registration plates Registration plates may: display white, grey or silver characters on a black background – only on vehicles manufactured before 1 January 1978 ----------------- 6 Vehicle ‘first used’ dates – Application of test criteria Vehicles having a Q plate registration when presented for MOT are to be treated as follows: for emission purposes only, they are to be considered as first used before 1 August 1975 for all other testing purposes they are to be considered as being first used on 1 January 1971 --------------- So 1) this means "visible smoke only" test for emissions test and 2) as you cant use a car before it is manufactured then it's plate away! You also don't need a bunch of other stuff that you already have for IVA like fog lights or hazard lights even. However this may be in conflict with some other law/rule that I do not know about
Edit looks like I need to type faster!

Fog & reversing lights are mandatory on a Q plate, emissions are as passed IVA test for engine but may often be taken as smoke test only at MOT time but this is changing now as some have got caught recently with having to comply with year of test as it was not logged on the V5 that the engine was older - typical DVLA cock up but almost irreversable to get it corrected.
Nt sure on the legality of the silver/black plates on mine but it's illegal to speed as well but we all do every day.

So what's not fact in that statement or as you put it not the TRUTH? It's an absolute statement of fact that in no way precludes later cars from also being fitted with them.

As a matter of interest,as it might have a bearing on something I am busy with, how "sharp" is your front bumper? What radius did they accept there, and is there a minimum or maximum height it needs to be at?

'should' be black/yellow. It may not be though It would be a bit sad if it wasn't on black&silver's but with some black on yellows & stickyfixers tucked under the passenger seat in case the popo notice you're being a little bit naughty in that department.

Sorry to ask a dumb question that might have already been well covered in these pages... but am I right in thinking you have a bypass gate in the exhaust system?

Radius is 3mm top & bottom of the 7mm splitter, and no - no height restrictions - well there is probably an upper height restriction but you did not mean that did you?

Risk of getting pulled is minimal - look at all the 'personalised' plates that are mis-spaced or on 3D or honeycombe backgrounds etc, they are more illegal and never get tugged so it's worth the risk. Sorry to ask a dumb question that might have already been well covered in these pages... but am I right in thinking you have a bypass gate in the exhaust system? No, what I do have is the exhausts you can see in the front wings - the end cap comes off (one bolt) so they are open, otherwise it kicks back in and exits via the silencer just before the back tyre.
