UpdateThe topic was dead, but the old BMW definitely wasn't!
The past months of work gave me a very good reason to write a big update..
i'll start at the beginning. (not THE beginning, that's written down in the first post). The cool story actually starts with this:
I added the text 'with bikecarbs' in the topic title to attract more viewers.
;D
A M10 1800cc 8v lump. It came out of a E30 316, got a Pierburg crapburator and should fit exactly in the 02, with the original 02 gearbox attached.
The problem with that 316 engine was the amount of ponies bouncing on the pistons. in factory trim it produces a amazing 90 bhp. Not that bad, but it could be better..
so.
I bought a set of 38mm Keihin carburators for it. The Piershit lump on the right for comparing. the idea was to create a intake manifold myself, and buy a hotter camshaft somewhere, to make the engineswap being more worthly ;D
Some more pics:
When messing with the 1.8 lump, some of my mates decided to do a trackday on Circuit Park Zandvoort. That was way too cool for leaving it as it was..
But a fully standard 1502 would do nothing on the track. The first mod was a bucket seat..
And the caravan towing curse word had to be removed.
Now it was ready for circuit action. (yeah, even with those little mods it stays a standard 1502, but what the heck
)
Old miss Stuka went surprisingly well on the track. Forget the straights, with 75 bhp it's like watching potatoes grow. But the corners were big fun ! and I even overtook some 'cool' people in Golfs or Civics ;D
Small movie in the same corner, credits go to to TRDennis
nl.youtube.com/watch?v=uXQMHpUXeyUWell, back to the engine stuff. The original fuel pump would not fit the Keihins in terms of pressure, so there was a electric pump of some Honda motorcycle.
In the same time, the inlet manifolds were welded by a nice guy at dad's work. He is waaaay better at welding compared to my thorching art, what you'll see on the result:
Of course I had NO time to wait before those things got together.
Now the engine actually looked like something seroius
Back on the car, I always wanted to buy a LSD for the 02. I already mounted a LSD before, on my daily E30 318i.. that opened a new world of waaay better handling, so the 02 had to get one.
but.. someone decided that 02 LSD's cost about 700-1000 Euro in the netherlands or Germany!! NO WAY that i'm paying silly money for a LSD!
That gave me a good reason to weld the differential together. There's no difference (forget the schreech-clunk when parking, parking is stupid), it drifts WAY better!
Donutting works too..
nl.youtube.com/watch?v=ayiyM3m-0n0..well, the donutting on that movie was with the throttle flat on the floor..
Now, after listening to the donut movie, you know why I call the beast the 'Stuka'..
The old bucket seat was a piece of sh*t, another reason to buy something different:
and a rev counter is always useful..
(note that separate rev counters cost around 100 euro here, while complete dashes WITH rev counter being sold for ~40 euro.. guess what I bought)
Oh, and there was another trackday at Zandvoort.
No, it doesnt have any bodyroll at al, the curve is banked!!
The welded diff did some great work!
No understeer at all!
Banked curve again..
I also decided to take a driftday with old Stuka. The 1.8 engine wasn't built in yet, I was waiting for the 300deg camshaft coming up..
Luckily enough it went quite well, the welded diff helped a lot.
A Snap On bolt fastener didn't. a friend bought that, and offered to change my wheels. it was a offer I could not refuse until one of the front wheels decided to overtake me on the straight!
oh well.
curse word.
that took a lot of time to fix, thanks to the BMW system of separate front legs, which are held together by very small rusty nuts.
Then I found the good news between the post.
The camshaft arrived!
After mounting that stick, there was no reason to wait with engineswapping! Finally!
It was old and well used, but had to go out:
Let's fill it with something similiar
The oil pan, oil pump, exhaust manifold and water pump had to be swapped before the new engine bolted straight in.
After some troubles with connecting the new ignition on the stock wire loom (got from points to electric ignition), the 02 was prepared to fire up again.
The engine started immediately, and the carbs weren't even jetted right!
crappily enough it made more noise than you'll expect from a engine. It turned out to be the valves dancing on the pistons..
To set the timing correctly, I had to buy a adjustable chain wheel for the camshaft.
and then..
then..
the 02 finally drived out of the garage. On the first short test drive, it turned out that the Keihins needed waaaay bigger main fuel jets. I bought some sets of jets at a local motorbike shop, and started to jet it myself. I jetted several mopeds in the past, and that's very similiar to jetting bike carbs.. well, it's even more crappily work, I had to remove the whole carb battery for changing jets.. and jetting carbs means that you have to change those stupid jets continously, until you have the right size..
Now, the carbs are jetted almost properly. the car is TOTALLY different to drive than before.. it makes a lot of noise and.. way more Shetland ponies under the pedal!!
the 0-100 (or 0-60mph) is still curse word, thanks go to the completely worn out rear tires.. they only lasted 3 drift days and 1 trackday.. I'm gonna ask my money back
The same location as the donut movie earlier in this post, but now on dry asphalt and with waaay less throttle
The future plans are buying a set of springs and dampers. I like the Spax spring/damper set so I think i'd buy that.
After that, maybe a rollcage, and in the future respray the rusty bits and put a Jagermeister sticker set over it
