Lots of little jobs done this weekend. Scrubbed the boot carpet but still lots of marks on it. Going to try the old boot polish on it next.
Cleaned up some of the engine bay and the engine itself prior to popping the head back on. Later today I plan on re-fitting the manifolds etc.
The old battery was, unsurprisingly, knackered but a spare one was connected and most of the electrics tested and found to be OK. A couple of bulbs may need replacing though.
The car came off the road originally due to low compression on no.1 cylinder. The head has been sorted as it was believed to be a burnt valve. Once the engine is running again I'll find out if it was indeed a valve! If not the bottom end will have to come out which will obviously add time, effort and cost to the project.

Hi Dave! LNK was running OK last time I checked. Still need to balance the carbs etc but he should be at WWW. Madge will definitely live again, hopefully by next summer. Today I started putting the manifolds back on then realised that the head had been set up to receive the Holbay items with different length studs. Initially I am just re-fitting the standard carb and exhaust so I need to get a couple of studs as I didn't have enough of the right size in stock. I then turned my attention to the ROS door where the door button had jammed in the 'in' position. Carefully removed the door card and saw that a lever which is pushed by the button was slightly bent allowing the button to slip past it and then jam on it. A little pressure applied to the lever bent it enough to prevent the button jamming. Next I had a crack at the boot carpet. It went from this: via this and this to this By no means perfect but a lot better than it was, the boot polish should help the vinyl top surface too. Here it is back home: Another little job involved the shredded rubber gearlever gaitor. It was next to useless and let fumes in last time I drove it (2008). I had an old leather gaitor and a spare ring from a Motolita steering wheel. Some judicious use of a drill and a wee while later I had this: Top of the fuel tank after 2 coats of Hydrate 80. Mildly cleaned up off side of the engine. Yet (never?) to be cleaned near side.

Acquired a couple of suitable manifold studs from good old Midnight Motors in Watford this morning and got the manifolds bolted up. Gave the air cleaner parts a second coat of paint and also added a coat to the steel rocker cover (will eventually be replaced by my alloy Holbay one once the engine is fully sorted).
Then I had to head off to work. Pics laterer.

Engine mostly back together and spinning over on the starter. Good oil pressure. Fuel pumping through to the carb (although it's over 7 years old so will have to be drained before I try starting it). The head originally came off 7years ago because I was told a valve had burnt on no.1 cylinder causing the engine to run on 3. Head is now all sorted and back on the block. Today I decided to check the compression. Dry: 4=130. 3=125. 2=125. 1=60 So no.1 still has no compression suggesting it was the bottom end after all. Did a 'wet' test and got no.1 up to 150 with the others getting about the same.
So it looks like I'll have to whip the engine out and get it re-bored to take the +30 flat-top pistons and rings I have in stock. Cost being the issue this will take some time to sort.
In the meantime I have some welding to get done. Deadline for getting it back on the road is next summer so should be able to meet that!

Ah, that's annoying about the compressions, just when it was looking like you might have a runner. Flat top pistons are probably out of a 1500. You need to keep an eye on compression ratio putting them in to a 1725 because of the longer stroke.

Hi Seth,
Yes, they are out of a 1500 from memory. Can't check the manual as I'm at work but I think the Vogue had a relatively low c/r as standard so the flat tops will hopefully bring it up to something a little better?
Edit: c/r is apparently 9.2:1
Any idea what the flat tops would change that to?

Got fresh petrol in the tank now and she's running as she's meant to rather than with the temporary fuel supply.
Waiting for some new hoses and some paint for the radiator before I can run her up to temperature. Need to free off the clutch, hoping heat will help.
Got all the electrics working and replaced a couple of bulbs. Fuel gauge seems to work with 1/4 tank.
Other jobs for the recommissioning include: Replace suspension springs and shocks inc bushes. Fit nos anti roll bar and bushes. Have calipers refurbished and fit all new brake stuff. Weld up little bit of rot under driver seat area (jacking point).
Need to run another compression test as I have a sneaking suspicion cylinder no1 may now have compression. Probably just wishful thinking but we'll see................

Congrats Baz! Love the temp fueling set up. Looks to be running very smoothly, moreso than I'd have thought if only on three.

Cheers Seth. Did another compression test this morning.
1 = 160. 2 = 155. 3 = 100. 4 = 155.
Looks like no 1 is OK now. No 3 is down though. It was 125 when I first did them the other week so hopefully it's just down to the tappets needing setting up.
Once the cooling system is sorted and I can run it up to temperature I can set the tappets and see how it goes compression wise. Also hopefully get the clutch freed off.

Just looked on eBay. M16 are indeed plentiful and brand new ones are pretty good value.

A quick look at the engine as it stood yesterday, new heater hoses yet to be fitted, waiting for rad hoses and repainted rad to go back in along with the cleaned up alternator.

Today was a good and bad day.
Got the cooling system finished and ran her up to temperature. All good so far, expansion tank worked fine as did the temp gauge. Once warm I got the clutch working, so I bled the old curse word out and replaced with fresh.
Once hot I reset the tappets then did a compression test. Now have 160 on 3 cylinders and 156 on the other.
Happy with the engine I decided to take a closer look at the rot. Got her up on ramps and stands and started digging.
Bu66er! More rot than I thought, mostly from the front o/s sill back to the B pillar. Seems to be the inner sill and some of the floor plus some chassis members.
I'll grab some pics tomorrow.
