Welcome to my thread for my GX71 Toyota Chaser
First off, big props to EvilGed, a RR member who sold me this cool as car. Ged is a top bloke, thoroughly recommended for any dealings you may have with in the future. He has been fantastic through out our very drawn out transaction. You'll find him terrorizing scooby drivers in essex ;D
So.. My car. I love this thing! ;D I have a lot of love for old skool J-tin and after owning a ST162 Celica, a FC3S RX-7, a KP62 Starlet and a KE70 Corolla I find myself the very proud owner of this scruffy old J-barge.
If you don't know already, the Chaser comes from a family of very similar Toyota models that all share the same floorpans, running gear and engines with very subtile differences up top. They can all be confused together quite easily. They are the Chaser, Cresta, Cressida and Mark II. The Chaser and Mark II are put forward as the sporty ones of the bunch, with their sportier suspension etc while the Cressy and Cresta tend to be a little more plush with more luxury items. Chaser is just the coolest sounding. It's cool just saying "yeah, I got a Chaser" which does feel cool for about 2 seconds until someone replies "Oh right... What's that then?" At which point then you have to explain it' a boxy old toyota with seats like the ones from your nan's front room. Which I love and are stupidly comfy.
The exciting thing about all of these though is they borrow lots of bits from Supras. The best bits of course being the engines!
However.. mine is a 2ltr straight 6 with an autobox. Boo!
The weediest of the lot! I have a billion KM on the clock but it runs so sweet. Everyone comments how quiet and smooth it is with the bonnet is up. At some point in its past someone bunged a huuuuge cherry bomb on the back of the exhaust. It's rusty and skruffy but makes the best noises..
So the plans.. I no particular order.
Lose the autobox!!
Swap the engine
Get some proper suspension on there
Tasty wheels
Tidy up the body work. All the arches are skruffy old repairs but the rest fo the car is solid. The sills, floorpan, strut tops all the important bits, are all solid
the cat helps hide the shame of skruffy rusty old bodgy repair bits..
For a while I was having a real ball ache trying to find out which engines/gearboxes can be swapped from what.
turns out both these supras had the same 2ltr 1G-GE as my Chaser and they come in manual too. Still gotta find out which will be the better fit. I think it is the later model.
so for simplicity I could get hold of one of these as a donor car. perhaps a non runner or no mot of tax jobbie from ebay or a scrappy. which I can then get my manual gearbox, pedals and much needed rad from and have a spare engine too.
but, if I can do that why not go for the bigger engines? 3ltr twin turbos.. Hmm surely if the 1G-GE bolts in to the Supra/Chaser then I should be able to do it with the bigger engines. I know That the J-land Mark II has the twin turbo engine..
In my dream world I would of course have a 1jz under the bonnet. But my budget doesn't stretch that far.. At least I don't think it will.
So anyways while saving some pennies and waiting for payday you do the things that cost nowt.. Give it a good ol clean and then out with the lowering stick, shut your eyes and take a big swing!
Some more pics showing some of the cool features of this car. Well I think they are cool ;D
This was on the test run after lowering. Find a local bridge, push all the sport buttons and gas it ;D
all within legal limits
happy days
