This is Theundertakers 1.7td estate. It does daily driver duty on a job share with the capri and also comes into it's own ferrying bits of car up and down country. When it fell into his lap he protested 'that it was going to stay standard, practical and inconspicuous'
I then went and bought this to break as it had leather and a 16v in it
Before anyone has a baby that I broke it I feel I should point out that: a - this picture makes it look soooo much better than it was in the flesh and, b - it started out life as a white car, the edges of every panel were rotten, not a straight panel on it etc, was much more useful as a BBQ ;D
And the wheels, 15x7 Image 2 piece split rims, were put on the Astra, along with some 60mm springs, a subtle rebadging on the tailgate, and some rubbing strip removal.
Whilst -60mm doesn't sound a lot, it has settled a bit since these pictures and has tonight, after 6months of fast road abuse, worn a hole in the bottom of the sump Result of which was all the oil falling out, closely followed by the man himself spending the evening in the garage removing the sump and welding it back up, I've suggested an ally sump guard to him, but 'the welding that's gone back in is loads thicker than the original tin so it's gonna take longer than 6 months before I have to do it again!'

The wagons do have a lot of potential to look cool, in a perverse way (it was a slow, bad handling boat) I kinda miss my first car, a mk3, now. Really want one to get scraping along with a total shave and some nice cav 4x4 turbo alloys on it. Mmmmmm.

We've got a '98 (last of the MK3's) Astra TD estate, it's the OH's daily driver and our general load lugger... I have to say I'm not exactly impressed with it... glacial performance (I thought turbo diesels were supposed to be torqey?), unsuportive seats and vauge steering...
|
|
... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

I am pretty sure the later astras got the gm(ish) td engines, which were frankly, turd. If you find an isuzu engined 1.7 you're laughing.

Yes, ours is the GM engine, I belive it's a low pressure turbo... I think they put out something like 68 BHP My missus loves 'em though, she's had 3 Astra estates scince passing her test ;D

I have an isuzu engined one as my daily too. It's ace -60 looks cool! what does it ride like after the drop? My plan was to keep mine stock aswell but i have a broken spring one side and it feels wrong buying standard height ones for more than lowering jobs! I used to have a 1.8 16v sport estate aswell, which was mad for what it was, a proper factory sleeper Good work

Ah cool you put the rasta up on here. I have many happy memories of going sideways in fields with grass flying in thru the windows in this bad-boy...ah, the joys of westcountry living! I also have a few memories of feeling sick after long, bumpy, crashy drives thru the lanes lol!
EDIT: I also fondly remember the day The Undertaker announced that the Rasta had died of an unknown fault and just wouldn't go anywhere above 10mph, only to later realise he put unleaded in it, d'oh! ;D

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

The bonnet and roof are going gloss black dude, (curing/hiding the lacquer falling off problem) Ride is astoundingly bumpy at -60 but the handling and looks more than make up for the choppiness. This one's got the Isuzu motor and apart from it's hunger for starter motors it's surprisingly quick for an oil burner. @ Reanimation, yeah, it's fun down here but the wages are some of the lowest in the country bound to be a trade off for living somewhere nice I suppose
