not strictly retro perhaps, but i thught i'd post it as some people might be interested, and i've posted up the other two cars so why not
bought back in 1999 to replace my 1.4 8v metro gta, standard bar a k&n airfilter. it was a multipoint injection one, so fairly swift as it was.
being a bit of a boyracer, and having not much money i started playing with the looks,, but also added the odd performance tweek here and there. first major mod was a set of 6x15in compomotive TH2s 15s are a BiG wheel for a metro and took a fair bit of work to get to fit properly, however they did make enough room for a 285mm big brake conversion.
soon after i started getting clutch slip, when the garage started fitting the new clutch they founf the gearbox was dead, the input shaft bearings had collapsed, allowing the shaft to move far enough to destroy the oil seal and its housing. i decided to pay a little bit more for a 216 gearbox and clutch, knowing they would better cope with any future power upgrades. around this time i became more interested in driving than looks, so stripped the interior and started atteending trackdays.
once i had bought the lancia, and was using that as a daily driver the metro became rather neglected. it's engine was tired, and the body was starting to look very scruffy.
then things took a turn for the better.
a friend of a friend was selling his metro to fund a trip abroad. the shell was pretty much totally knackered, but it was the engine i was interested in, a 1.8 k-series running jenvey throttlebodies and an emerald 3d ecu.
one weekend me and a mate swapped the lot into my metro, and at that stage the car looked like this...
faced with needing body repairs on virtually every pannel, and the standard caribbean blue pearl paint being a nightmare to colour match, i decided to go for a metallic black colour (as per the lancia) and chose rover charcoal metallic, a sandard off the shelf rover colour that was an option on the rover 100, but never factory supplied on the metro gti
diy rattlecan style FTW!!!
at the same time, as i'm now too old to be a boy racer i swapped the bonnet for a standard one, painted the bumpers matt black to echo the standard ones, and also smoked the clear pug 205 rear lights i thought it was a good idea to fit at some stage. there are still plenty of custom touches to make it 'mine' but it doesnt shout out at you like it used to....
plans for the near future are to tidy and paint the engine bay, finish seam welding the interior, and fit a big valve head and some nicely lumpy cams. i'm hoping to get down to bellow 750kg, and at least 180bhp at some point...
