Nice buy Dez! The estate I had a few years ago was £500 and much tattier than that (still a great drive though). Lovely old things, a pleasantly odd mix of distinctly unsporting looks, chitz-tastic interior and a surprising turn of speed. Some people would prefer the manual that estates came with, but the auto ‘box on the saloons is really rather good and shouldn’t put anyone off (saloons more common in any case, by a ratio of about 4:1 based on original sales, so more chance of finding one of them). agreed, saloons are much more common. but, any big old estate car arguably has a better survival rate, and is worth more, due to general usefullness. i do think they're a very good car, they're much better than an equivelent age volvo, which is what i was originally looking at. now i've just got to figure out the parts interchangability with other nissans now- i already have one very interesting development on that front though

i'm thinking about that......
but they're expensive, hard to find, and have usually had a hard life. the block is the same, but i cant find out how similar the gearbox and clutch setup is. i cant see why it would be different, but sods law it will be!!
ive got a few other things to attend to first.

i've actually just got back from meeting the guy who i bought it off to see the rest of his stash. hes got another 7(yes, 7!!) nissan 300Cs, 4 estates and 3 saloons. plus a couple of toyota CROWNs, a JDM toyota century(which is a gorgeous car), a couple of cortinas, and a datsun 280c. about half of these will be returned to the road and will be for sale, including one or 2 of the 300C estates, the rest are too far gone and will be parted out to provide spares for the others then bangered, so let me know if you're interested. when they banger them they pull the nissan boxes and motors out as they're front dizzy, and replace them with cologne V6s, so hes got a load of motors and gearboxes palleted up too! they're actually banger racers i have respect for, as they're not out to trash everything, and actually provide a good amount of spares for this type of car.
ive collected replacement parts for a few bits of trim on mine that are damaged, plus a set of stock alloys, all included in the price of the car. ile be going back down there at some point to pick up a few more bits too.

Dez, Bodie&Doyle told me last night about a pair of 280C front wings he knows of, 430 model I think (one that immediately precedes 300C, looks similar at first glance). £20 or they get chucked! I think the guys you mentioned might be able to make use of them, and they're local.
Other reason for not using the Nissan V6 would be the injection - no carb-equipped models were sold here (though I suppose a manifold could always be made up?).
I once managed to single-handedly get a VG30E engine and auto 'box into the back of a 300C saloon (and I'm not exactly Charles Atlas), having first removed the seat and door. I was selling it as a package to a guy in Norway. Not a bad car that one, hope it's still around.

i dunno, he had a couple shoved right in the back corner. i think he said they were cortinas, i i didn't even look. later boxy shape things, so id say mk4-5? no idea of condition, may be banger fodder, or may be usable, i can ask.

dunno why I thought you was in ireland, don't think I was fully awake when I read the 'co.' bit at that price on a group 8, youre getting right royally bummed, unless you have 13 points, half a dozen convictions, and live in the ghetto! all nissan 3L v6s up to very recently share the same bottom end/block, including patrols, and 300ZXs. dunno about the 350z. anyway, tonights episode wasn't too good, iv'e managed to break stuff before its even insured its seems in the '80s nissan had a fixation with controlling everything by cables. they probably had a redundant cable crimping machine or 2 after they went over to hydro clutches, so big bossman at nissan said 'design all this bits to work by cable boys, that'll get it in use'. or the japanese translation anyway. it might have seemed a good idea at the time, but 20 years down the line it means grief. spare wheel held on by cable/winch- check boot electric window cable operated-check cable dipstick-check the only one still intact is the dipstick. the leccy window one was well gone years ago, you can guess what the cable looked like after living directly under a window seal for that long. i've fished all the bits out from inside the rear 1/4 (now i've popped the drain plug out and lost the 6" deep puddle out of there- thankfully its well rustproofed). I have ideas on cleaning everything up and getting a stainless cable made for here. the boot window is too cool to not have it working!! tonight, I managed to snap the cable for the spare wheel. it hangs underneath via aforementioned cable, you lay the spare on the floor under the back of the car, poke the thing on the end of the cable through the centre bore, then use the wheel brace to winch it up. all well and good til the cable goes ping and drops the wheel back on the floor. bum. i might just buy a new one, but itll mean main stealer, if they can get one, so it'll be ass rapage, or see about one of these in stainless as well. will probly be cheaper to get one made.......

so, another 2 weeks without 'net thanks to the numptys at BT. in that time I took a coil and a half off the front, its only dropped it 2-2.5" but itll do for now(until I get some blocks for the rear from the sates anyway), was a nice quick job and it gave me chance to take some measurements off the front struts so I can source some bits from the scrappy to make me some proper struts. the front struts are of a very odd design that takes 50mm OD inserts, but has 55mm OD legs. I have a full set of front and rear coilover bits originally intended for a ford focus that I picked up cheap which are 50mm, so I need to convert it to 50mm OD, with shorter inserts, to get me nice and low but keep the ride. ive still not fitted the wheels cos I need to drop nearly 300 on tyres to get it how I want I then racked up 450 miles without a problem. 27mpg so far, excellent ;D

update. well, not much to update really. lack of funds preventing progress, as well as lack of equipment. I need to buy- lowering blocks=£40ish tyres=£280 pay for machine work= £ no idea yet and buy bits for the struts= don't know depends on scrappy prices. add to that the fact my compressor is still 150 miles away so I cant blast or paint the wheels, and the lack of progress gets annoying. in an attempt at making some progress, I poured a tin of paint stripper over one of the wheel centres tonight then sanded some of it, definately the hard way to do it. I need my compressor. and I cant paint em til I get some centrecaps. anyone know where I can get some 155mm diameter centrecaps of a non-gash design? I was thinking about making some if I cant find what I want. on the plus side, i've found the paint i'm using on the centres. HOK 'dark gold' flake. ive had this tin of it for at least 3 years, waiting for the 'right' use. its quite a small flake, 200 micron, but I think it should look rather sexy against the champagne bodywork. I think I will be doing the new brake calipers in this too. hopefully one day soon ile be able to actually get it all done!

well, i thought i d drag this back up as there was a development today. i still cant bring myself to spend £400 to get the split rims sorted and shod in appropriate rubber, so i picked these up for a bargain price today. mitsubishi FTO rims, with almost brand new (Still have the bobbles) 205/50R16 goodyear eagle F1s. £300 worth of tyres. they're the right bolt pattern, i have a set of correct wheel nuts, but either need the centre bore opening up a touch, or 5mm spacers before they can be fitted. and the front one pumping up, obviously i quite like em, they look very similar to a certain 16" porsche rim. i think i will run the for a while then sell them on when the time come to sort the splits. i REALLY need to sort out the lowering blocks for the back and the coilover conversion for the fornt now though, as it looks very high on those rims!!

Dez, Those wheels suit it quite well, looks like they've got a nice edge to paint to if you wanted coloured centres too.

nissan put that 3.0l v6 engine in the silvia in the US it was 165bhp they put the VG30 series in pretty much every car in their range for years! theoretically, the 300+hp VG30DETT from a 300ZXTT is a bolt in fit.......... but try finding one of those for a reasonable price!!

I had a 300C. Brilliant car it was. I fitted AC to it (cheers Will) and some Skyline wheels yep, they're definately very good cars. mine needs some attention/tidying really though, as well as all the other changes ive got planned. not a bad choice of wheels on yours- ive got a set of skyline brake laying around that will probably make it onto this shame the front is so hard to lower properly- unlike the back!!

Dez, Those wheels suit it quite well, looks like they've got a nice edge to paint to if you wanted coloured centres too. yep, it does look nice on them. but ive seen it on the 17" splitrims tbh, the FTO wheels really need blasting and repainting as well as they have some bubbling, but cos they're a basic shape and plain silver, itll get away with them for now. the next cash i spend on this thing will be to get it lowered, not to get the other wheels fitted.

cheers rim choice is one thing i really cant decide on ive got the 17" splits, which i now will look cool, but i keep getting urges for banded steels and big dish/poke/stretch........... anyways, ive done summat to it recently. first, i slapped this on to replace the rather worn stocker- the smaller diameter has really sharpened/quickened up the steering, and 'cos of the power steering it can still easily be wanged about one-handed. it fits absolutely perfectly, the chrome base plate is exactly the right size to fill the hole left in the column cowl by the old one. then, i did something more performance related. i binned the stock fan (approx 14") and water pump driven viscous coupling, as well as half a ton of plastic shrouds, then knocked up a snazzy framework to fit a pair of 12" leccy GATE fans, controlled by an adjustable-temp thermostatic switch. this pics make it look a very quick job, but it took me most of the afternoon to build the full frame and get the fans fitting in the right place, etc. heres the framework- i cut the original bottom mounts off but the fans are otherwise unmodded. bolted up- i fitted the thermostat to the battery tray support- shown here before bolting in- here it is all fitted with the thermostat tucked out of the way- i plan to do a little more work on the wiring, soldering all connections rather than the current crimp connectors. I'm then going to shorten/modify the induction system to get it flowing better, including moving the airflow meter and loosing the stock airbox and a lot of piping.
