I bought this in the summer of last year, a lunch hour impulse Ebay purchase. 1300C Mk2 Golf with some history and a few months test for peanuts. Went to Preston to fetch it, and on the way back the exhaust fell off However once I'd given it a once over it looked to be a tidy motor: I was struggling for ideas as to what to do with it, I was keen on the 'Hoodride' style aircooled stuff, but figured this was too tidy to start stripping the paint off. Another idle lunch hour on ebay sourced these: So I hatched a plan to do a budget bike carb conversion. Some alloys were stuck on, 16v clusters, german plates and surrounds, and with my christmas money, some coilovers: Got fed up with the alloys, and stuck on some GTi steels in matt black: Added a GTi interior and Audi wheel: Meanwhile, I got a manifold sorted: And this weekend I fitted the carbs! It's not quite running right yet, but they sound awesome! Really impressed with how about £70 worth of bits I have collected has gone together and actually works! Will try and host some videos when I get em off the camera

Basically most modern 4 cyl sports bikes have big 4 barrel carbs. The most popular carbs for conversions are ones off Honda Fireblades, CBR 600s or Yamaha R1s. Mine are off a CBR 600, they have 38mm barrels, and I've re jetted them to suit the bigger engine.
There's a firm in Yorkshire calle Bogg Bros. which makes up the manifolds to a high standard in aluminium, whatever carbs you have to whatever engine, for £175.00.EDIT (mine is NOT one from bogg bros, I am tight, and made my own, and it is not high quality!) They'll also re jet your carbs for you and have a Dyno so you can set them up properly. The carbs are a cheap alternative to twin 40 webers, mainly because they are easier to find and much cheaper. (mine were £35 off ebay)
I've got a 'How to' out of Performance Vauxhall on a PDF if anyone wants it. It explains all the parts you need for the conversion.

Looks good tom. I've been following your thread on e38 and was interested to see what happened since you said you were fitting bike carbs. I've just got back into dubs with a mk2 polo coupe s that looks to have the same engine as yours so I'll be interested to see how you get on with them ! Keep up the good work. BTW, your car looks really nice on the tarantula's ! ;D

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

hey dude, what is attauly involvd in re-jetting these carbs? Are you modding the jets yourself or just swapping them for differant ones?

get a drill and make them bigger.. or fit bigger ones..
not allways necesary though depending on the carbs you are using

I spoke to Bogg bros about this as I was unsure about drilling the jets. I asked what size jets would suit my engine (1300 8v with no mods) and the chap I spoke to suggested 160s (which are 1.6mm bore) or alternatively get a set of engineers drill bits, and drill my existing ones out. I am tight so did the latter! The standard jets that are in there are stamped 135 which I guess means 1.35mm. It's a doddle to do, just take off the float bowls one by one, unscrew the large jet in the centre, drill it out and pop it back in.
The carbs I use are made by Keihin and are used on honda CBRs and some Kawasakis. They share the same main jets as weber DGAS/DGAV carbs, and if you want to do a proper job, are only a couple of quid each (although not sure who stocks them)

Not sure to be honest, the engine is stock at the min apart from the carbs. It definitely feels more spritely, pulls better, would be interested to get it on the rollers to see what difference it's made.
To make the most of them you really want a 4 branch exhaust manifold, free flow exhaust and maybe a cam. I've seen guys on club polo get a claimed 100bhp out of a 1.3 8v.
Not sure what you'd get out of a 1.6, the problem with the conversion on those engines is the exhaust manifold is under the carbs generating loads of heat. I've seen it done somewhere on a 1.8 8v engine, but the heat from the exhaust was causing the fuel in the float bowls to vaporize. I think the guy made a heatshield for the exhaust to stop it.

I know someone who pulled out 65bhp out of a stock 1100cc polo lump which has 50bhp with the standard carb..
also the torque had increased a lot and was flatter, so more low torque..

Hmmm I was thinking bout bike carbs on a 1.4 ABD engine to put in my Polo but I'm just gunna use GT injection because I've heard they effect the emissions and my Polo is on an L so needs to pass an MOT

Looking and sounding good.
Did you just butcher the original manifold to fit the carbs?

Looking and sounding good. Did you just butcher the original manifold to fit the carbs? No mate, the original manifold is all an alloy casting with water heating from the cooling system. I had a mate cut me a 6mm steel plate on the CNC machine at his works, and I welded 4 pieces of tube to it to allow the carbs to fit on. I also had to drill a tube to fit the vacuum for the brake servo and ignition timing.
