Hi Juergen, I was doing a load of work on my fasty tonight and the pictures above sprung into my head. I don't know if you have already thought of this but the reinforcement panel you removed; Happy with the welder I started to take a look at the front ; Remember it holds the support bracket for the fuel filler tube. Again, sorry if you have allready thought of this but I would hate not to say and it cause you problems later. Dave Hi Dave ! it is good, that you mention this, i nearly forgot this so i have to work out something, though i thought about getting an old fuel tank... it must look cool when you open the bonnet to fill it up more news at the weekend, i have ordered and received some panels for the bumper mounts, i'll fit them on saturday...

I'm glad I wasnt telling you something you allready knew. If moving the filler kneck inside the bonnet, why not flush the tank out and weld up the opening and fit a new filler somewhere on top of the tank? I tried to fit an early tank to one of my late beetles and it wouldnt go as there wasnt enough clearance around the collapsable section of the steering column. I don't know if a type 3 would have the same problem but it might be something you need to watch out for. Dave.

some more progress today; first i had to clean up the workshop and change the positions of the cars, which was some work, as all the cars moved were non-runners .... today i wanted to replace the right front bumper mount (and the panel behind it). VW designed the bumper mount with no holes at the bottom, so water comes in at the top but can't go out at the bottom... a mate of me produces zinc plated panels with holes at the bottom: and here the original design : the new bumper mount and the panel come separate, so before replacing it, i need to take some measurements: it was easier, to bolt the panel on.... the holes match, so i could find the right position for the panel... and this is how it sould be looking ... the zinc plated metal was not so easy to weld, though i remived the zinc where the welding was necessary.... Bolted the panel on again, just a trial fit, no welding, as there are some more holes behind the panel i have to close... more to come soon

only 8 months ago, the last update i didn't do anything on the Type 3 recently, but i managed to collect some parts; meanwhile i have a set of Koni shocks and a brand new set of brake calippers.... now a friend of me is restoring a Variant now, and he has bought several panels, i get everything he doesn't use , so this is what i collected last week : in total 5 wings, two bonnets and two doors. Except of one bonnet all sandblasted and primered.... but the other bonnet is worth a look, i think i'll hang it at the wall, it is so bad, that it is good... : the doors are already welded up, so now trim will come : the bonnet is fantastic, i have two more, both have rust holes : the silver one has an appointment tomorrow with Mr. A.Grinder tomorrow I need space, no-one wants the shell, so i'll cut it into pieces and lean the chassis against the workshop wall...

probably he painted the bonnet ? The blue one is on hold, as the Passat came in between, though I now know, that the blue TL is not sooo bad (compared to the Passat)

this weekend (we also had a bank holiday today) was used to clean up the work shop. When the toolbox is empty, all tools are everywhere in the workshop, then it is time again. Also i need some more space, so i took out Mr.Black&Decker : sad but true, i tried to sell the shell, but all what happened was people not reading the ad sending stupid e-mails floor pan and front suspension in fantastic condition, i think about having the floor pan sandblasted and use this for the blue one ? but in the end i have more space, and the next shell to go is the Scirocco, it'll be killed after my holiday....

That floor pan looks almost new. Its amazing how some cars look completely rusty but are solid underneath and other cars the opposite is true.

the best way of getting space in the workshop is trial fitting huge panels : Looks like a car again.....
