So, after wanting to have such a car since i was a small boy, i finally managed to buy not one, but two of these. One is a good shell and the other car is a donor car, so i am trying to puzzle one car together.... here are the pics of the shell, the donor car will be picked up as soon as i have made some space in the workshop: this is how it looks, already dismantled the floor pan is in very good condition... some welding was done before by the previous owner, but i am not happy with all of the welding... First test drive ;D there we go... lifting the shell was easy, no bolts had to be removed ---- i am starting with the cheapest job; gearbox and axles will be removed, rust prevented an re-fitted; chassis will be painted... then i have to buy a welding machine and start doing the body work... i am not sure what the car will look when it's finished, but i will look subtle; thinking about a pale yellow, matt black bonnets and of course low... for the beginning i will stick to the standard engine, let's see what will be later , i'll keep you updated

what steering wheel is that? Would probably be worth listing on ebay as a super rare China export only spec option. Nice car! Looks pretty solid for the most part and that's got to be a good starting point.

smaller update today : i picked up the donor car... doesn't look as bad as i expected, anyway i need almost all the parts from this one to complete the silver one, so i won't waste a thought about restoring this one also... in fact the blue one has been restored a couple of years ago. Sad to see this, as the rust is coming back quickly, even the c-pillar has a huge rust-hole. The interior is not 100 % , so the seats need to be refurbished. Dashboard is ok, it has the old steering wheel, and the car is complete except of the rear bumper. The trim is fine, so this won't be expensive to fix... and i was lucky; a friend of me gave me son GRP front wings in exchange of some tools... that was a bargain (for me and for him) , as NOS wings are 700 € each . It might be a bit of work to make them fit properly, but i prefer this instead of welding patches on the old rusty front wings... also i begin to like this colour. My initial thoughts for the paint job was yellow, but now i am not sure .... i try to get the engine running this week, so i hope there won't be bad news from the mechanic department.... i'll keep you updated...

Seems a shame to just use the blue car for parts... no... you don't want another project, quick, take it to bits! Love the badge on the back of the passat (I think?) by the way - 'KATALYSATOR'

i think i found the solution: i am restoring the blue one using the shell and floorpan from the silver one ;D so everyone is happy... i still have mixed emotions; the silver is in very good condition, the blue one might be too good to scrap... if i only had the blue one, i would probably restore it. But the deal were two cars... but it was a funny day today : Tried to get the engine running, but i couldn't open the filler cap... it usually is made of three parts; part number three fell into the filler neck then i tried to start the engine and the car moved forward... i thought it was in neutral, but obviously it wasn't. No gear lever was fitted, and i explained the heavy rolling of the car with seized brakes... so i had a look into the car and found a gear lever : must be a short shifter... Next surprise was the throttle cable : Should i buy a new one then ? and is it really time for a new exhaust ? But there was a sticker on the engine with a part number for a VW replacement engine... ;D so tomorrow i'll get some fuel and new fuel lines and then the engine should be running... Stu: yes, it is a Passat : and i wanted to remove the "Katalysator" badge, but i kept it for some reason... it is a stupid badge, but they were proud to have a catalitic converter in the 80s , when it was something special...

small update today : decision is made now, the blue one will die...so i started to break it today : engine out was a quick job : one reason for breaking it : looks like a lot of work, not only in the engine department... normally i wanted to keep the blue one as long as possible, due to space issues it has to go... hopefully i remember everything when completing the silver one... plan is to have the welding done until march, so it can go to the body shop.... still no idea for the colour... while it is being painted, i have the time (and space) to build the Jetta.... oh, and the guy who once restaured the car, left his signature on the left sill it was done in 1987.....
