Mr J, Looks like good progress and more importantly excellent planning so far. If you're breaking the blue one - there's a couple of little bits I need for mine! -The rubber bit for the engine bay release lever -Is that a windscreen washer switch on the dash? (just to the right of the clock) - I only need the screw-out bit of the switch -I also need the windscreen vent levers just visible on the left hand side of that photo -Bellows - the rubber ring between the air intake of the engine and the inlet. Any chance I could buy them off you? They should be reasonably easy to post... Vielen dank Matt ps. let me know if there's anything in particular you need - I have a shed full of bits and pieces!

Well, i could need a rust free shell ? ;D As the silver car is missing everything, i need to take all the parts from the blue one, but i have received two boxes of spares today, so there should be another switch and that rubber thing , i just need to look in the next days.... i still did not find out, what the green switch is; also the switch for the wipers, i can't tell you yet... i think i should have tried before breaking ;D ;D the progress is pretty slow at the moment, as i am helping a friend to restore his baywindow, but he will be painting the TL later, so "one hand washes the other" ( a saying over here)... but the brother from my GF gives me a compressor for free and his welder, so hopefully i'll be starting on the silver car soon,....

The green switch is probably the Turbo Boost button, or maybe ejector seat the progress is pretty slow at the moment, as I am helping a friend to restore his baywindow, but he will be painting the TL later, so "one hand washes the other" ( a saying over here)... but the brother from my GF gives me a compressor for free and his welder, so hopefully i'll be starting on the silver car soon,.... Sounds like you've got a lot of support for this one - excellent. Get some photos up of the Bay as well!

Vielen dank Matt ps. let me know if there's anything in particular you need - I have a shed full of bits and pieces! ok, i have been browsing the two boxes; the screw-out thing is no problem, the rubber bit for the engine bay release is missing , i only have the one from the blue car, and the rubber thing is painted blue Rubber from the air intake is missing, too, and i am not sure about the windscreen vent lever, i must check everything at the weekend and sort it, otherwise i will have problems when i want to put the car together. Just to explain, the blue one is nearly complete, the silver one is a bare shell, nothing inside, so some parts are unique... please PM me your adress, i'll send you then the things i have twice... regarding the bay window; here is a small blog i set up for this project : www.youngtimes.de/bus/index.phpit is completely in german, so under the first pic it says "Mehr lesen" which means "read more".... it is not 100% retro, the bus will get close to the original, not modified, but a very interesting experience for me. No worries about the budget, and if i need new parts, i just say it, and i get them. At the end the guy will spend a lot of money on the van, probably more than it's worth, but he is a perfectionist, and it will be one of the better ones... just a teaser : it has been sandblasted and is nearly finished with welding, it will be painted underneath, so that we can fit the axles again...

The blue one is like my old 411,concourse winner in '99 few years later, the dreaded tin worm everywhere These cars definitely need to be kept in a garage.

The blue one is like my old 411,concourse winner in '99 few years later, the dreaded tin worm everywhere These cars definitely need to be kept in a garage. the problem with the blue one is, that it was restored 20 years ago... too much filler, NO waxoil, so it had to die... it was sitting on grass the last 3 years, so this was the end. But when i am finished, the silver one will be kept garaged, driven only in summer... and lots of waxoil...

it took ages for an update, several reasons here : - Mk1 Jetta which came in between (and still is...) - several things for the daily drivers had to be sorted . work shop looked like a mess, and I am running out of space... so, Plan A was to restore the silver car using the blue one as donor car... now I have the problem, that there is no more space in the workshop at the moment and at the end of the month the 78 Passat Variant is coming in, so I started to clean up the workshop yesterday in the evening.. then saw the blue one standing and waiting for the last parts to be taken out.. so I looked a bit closer, moved it away and thought about trying the new welder... and this is plan B : the rust at the c-pillar; caused by PU foam VW used in the 70s to avoid corrosion looks a lot better, doesn't it ? the same procedure here; here you can see the foam... and finished... Happy with the welder I started to take a look at the front ; Hmm... ok, I started to drill the welding spots, so I could take this reinforcement panel of.. I didn't have to drill... ok, so this car was welded 20 years ago in this area, no protection after welding, and this is what it looks like... though not nice, it was solid for almost 20 years... so, time to stop here know, but the decision is made; the blue one will stay alive, the silver one goes probably to a good friend... I know, maybe not the best decision, but seeing how cars, which have probably more rust than this one are still restored by enthousiastic people, encourages me to go the harder way.... I think I need to buy some sheet metal for the future ;D

You look like you are finding the same rusty holes I have been finding on my fastback which I am restoring just now. If you are interested and need some inspiration (as I have taken from your pics) have a look here; www.vwscotclub.co.uk/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=4502Keep up the good work, Dave

Wow, yours has a great colour and those fantastic wheels... yes, it seems, that they all have the same problems... i am trying to source some panels, if not, i'll have to do them on my own... i just needed a kick to get started, which happened at the weekend... small update today; the dodgy welding from the earlier restoration; looks not nice, was also patched on the rusty panels underneath... No chance to stop the rust then, so I took the angle grinder... next problem, really silly design : all the leaves and the stuff fall in here, water keeps it wet, so this has to rust... still thinking how to avoid rust in future.... tomorrow i will start to make some panels.... also i have decided, not to keep the original engine, i am going four a Type 4 engine from a Type 25....

so, this was a very productive day ;D starting here : self made piece of metal... hitting it with the stick ;D et voila : i decided to make this panel in several sections, as it was too difficult for me, to make it all out on a sheet of metal... but it fits and looks quite good.. also the last bit of old dodgy welding was cut out and replaced... and ready : needs some more work with the angle grinder, i'll do that tomorrow... next week i don't have to work, so i'll have time to do some more progress....

no, not at all; i always hated it to patch cars together, this is different though as its mine and i have all the time in the world.... anyway, another update, finished a (small) part of the whole thing today : hat two smaller panels welded in and "cleaned" the seam welds with the good old angle grinder... same on the inside.... a little bit of red oxide ;D ok,i won't win pebble beach , but it is solid now and the rust won't come there for the next twenty years... there will be a special anti corrosion paint added but i'll do that when the front is ready... so, i have ordered some repair panels for the front bumper mounts, hope they will be here this weeks, so that i could probably finish the right side...

Hi Juergen, I was doing a load of work on my fasty tonight and the pictures above sprung into my head. I don't know if you have already thought of this but the reinforcement panel you removed; Happy with the welder I started to take a look at the front ; Remember it holds the support bracket for the fuel filler tube. Again, sorry if you have allready thought of this but I would hate not to say and it cause you problems later. Dave
