Ok... so not quite (well... not nearly) as retro as most of the cars on here, but I've been "bullied" by Seventynine into posting a topic here because he's sure that you'll appriciate it a lot more than the dub scene does!
Anyway, here's my 1991 Golf. Only a 1.6 Driver, but there's engine swap plans ahead. and like most of the modifications so far it'll be "unconventional" at best.
It's a 1991 only colour, which is exciting, and through the wonderful medium of a friend who lives in berlin I've snagged some parts that "only a mother could love"
here's the car when I bought it. Very nice... but I was fed up of get raced by people "what fort itz a GTi innet?" so things had to change:
too high for a start... so two weeks into ownership the coilovers went on:
but we couldn't get the front that low without too much work (I was young... I was learning...) so it came up a bit:
and a christmas photo for good meause (late march in the west midlands...):
Then I got bored and bought some whees for it. Prtly bacause some people told em that wheels off a renault wouldn't/shouldn't go on a Golf:
But they did, and I even washed the car for the ocassion:
My friend's Mk1 Astra Van in the background, thought you might like it?
Got myself a few ebay.de finds along the way, a strange fascination with obscure factory switches and interior pieces, note the In dash Cd holder. Can't say I recall having a CD player in 1991, let alone in my car!
then the OE- Backlash took place... aim of the game, fitting just about anything to lower the spec of the car, yeah it's cool to put up-market GTi bits on the car, but it's more fun trying to find the really rubbish stuff that people normally replaced to make the car more modern... pah!
The GTi spec arches had to go, replaced by CL wing trim and rear arch spats. the side repeaters (not that most of you have them anyway) were next to go. collected some lovely CL delete pieces, and the quad lamp grille was switched for an early spec single round effort.
Next was the interior... A good day at the scrappy turned up a golf "C" base model! an OE- gold mine... i took the centre consol delete pieces and promptly threw them at the car. I had to mutilate the heater vents in the dash to install the new position ashtray. not to worry
After a few days of itchy feet i put a new grille on the car:
I'm going to make the above grille propely shortly, cover the gaping hole of the missing spotlight with the remains of a single lamp grille. Took all the red trim off the car at the weekend and the front end currently looks like this:
after a few more parcels arrived from germany i was comfortable with how the rear end was looking. Genuine hella smoked tails (from a 1994 max power cover car I suspect) and ultimately 80's Treser Heckblende panel set it off a treat:
Next to arrive are my stunningly 80's wheels, then a trip up to sheffield to collect a BBS bodykit for the car...
Then we concentrate on the engine swap.
Sorry that I'm not as technical as most of you guys, or own a car half as interesting, but I hope you can see that this isn't a boring run-of-the-mill golf... I've been told by "seventynine" that I fit the RR bill... so here you go. I'll update as things happen, but that's you up to speed (as it were).
Paul.
