Well as most of you know I went to Oxford yesterday to collect this from Minion. As I've started working on it I decided it's time for a Readers Rides thread. Theres the pictures. Heres the problems: Eratic idling / stalling. Grumbly front wheel bearing. 4x4 style ride height. Lack of money! Adam

And I think I've solved the fuel smell mystery! I took the airbox off so I could see what was happening around the carb, started the engine, had a look around and I could see petrol all over the inlet manifold and could hear a hissing noise. A quick nosy around revealed fuel curse word out of a crack in the side of what I assume to be a swirl pot: I assume this could be causing the eratic idling aswell as there is less fuel going into the carb meaning it is leaning out? There would also be less fuel pressure. I'm off to the local stealership tomorrow to try and order a new one! Adam

Afraid not - have you tried eurocarparts?
Failing that you could see if A to Z in Thatcham have one, or BG Auto's off the A4 in Newbury (behind the Swan pub)
But if all else fails ebay / scrappy.
PS - you have tried fixing the crack haven't you?

Best stuff for plastics I've found is Marley Plastic Cement. You can get it from B&Q (behind the counter) and is what plumbers use for afixing plastic waste / drain pipes. I had to fix a crack in rad on the rocco the other week - got the car to temperature, dried / cleaned the area and smeared with the cement...all fixed - no more leaks

How about a bit of Loctite in the crack, I've got several tubes of the stuff in the garage? Is it fuel resistant or will it dissolve at the first sign of petrol?
EDIT: Seems to be! I'll try it a bit later, see what it does.

Loctite / superclue is great stuff for a short term fix - but it's curse word long term.
A tube of cement from B&Q is about £4 - if you don't want to spend out you could pop round mine with said part and I could stick a blob of cement on for free ;D

I'll pop to B&Q tomorrow, I should be able to stretch to £4 and it'll probably come in useful somewhere else Adam

A dab of fuel resistant plastic bonding glue on the petrol vapour separator and some tape to hold the vacuum pipe on and it's running sweet as anything! I'm off to the Motorist Discount Centre now to see about the wheel bearing Adam

You might also want to check the gasket between the Carb and inlet manifold these are notorious for splitting and causing bad idiling etc.

What engine has that got in it ? 1.3 ? What code ? > You'll find the code just above the alternator mount, stamped onto the block, note - this will probably need cleaning if the rocker cover gasket has been leaking ...... ;D PS - I'm breaking a polo ranger in a couple weeks if you need anything, struts for slammage perhaps ?? PM me.

PM me. It's an HZ 1043cc. I'll give you a PM with the stuff I would like off the Polo sometime! I believe the carb gasket is fine as it is idling fine but there is still a hissing coming from somewhere! It's driving me mad, I've spent about an hour trying to locate it with no luck My dad will find it in 30 seconds on the weekend ;D

no brake servo on a UK mk2 polo.
several vac pipes though, the lil bits of rubber hose used for connections between these can perish though, unseen, may hiss and deffo effect the running, worth checking/replacing these.

I've so far found two perished rubber connector things. I'm going to get a load of the stuff and replace all of them systematically. Adam

Cool car! I've got a good condition Haynes manual for the '82 to '90 Polo if it's any use to you? Might help with the fixing if you don't already have one?
