Well I went and picked them up today, my pair of Porsche 924, both W-reg 2litre versions. Between them I hope to make one good car! Car 1 - Red'n'cracked Picked up in Cambridge and towed 50 miles home. Has a running engine (lacks fan belt) and no exhaust box, sounds ace! Sh1t alloys, spare is standard 924. OK condition interior (some splits need looking at) and the full size lift out fibre glass roof (a bit cracked and manky might need to find a replacement). Car was originally a dark red, been resprayed a slightly lighter colour on outside and it's cracked and gone textured like leather! Had a bump at front and needs wing, headlight and front panel. Oh and it has stupid racing stickers all over it! Has the sunroof, rear spoiler and both door mirrors so think it's a fair spec. Car 2 - Red'n'blue (registered 1st Jan 1981 - cool!) Picked up a couple of miles from home, and has all the bits I need! Engine doesn't run yet (not been started for 2 years) but turns over. Has an exhaust that might be OK. Has the original alloys (hand painted black centres) that I want, with a matching spare (so 6 in total). Has an aftermarket glass sunroof. Panels are straight so will take the ones I need. The interior is stripped. Guy started a rebuilt and lost interest due to health issues. No seats or door cards but everything else is there just loose! The wiring is a mess and hence why I'm not bothering with this one. Car was originally a nice light blue but was resprayed red badly, the paint is lifting and really thick! Car is a basic spec I think as no spoiler, no standard sunroof and one door mirror. Does have a non standard rear bumper trim as well. So plan this weekend is to strip the red'n'blue one of anything I might need or of value and get it taken away asap. Few Qs: Do scrap collectors need wheels etc to pick a car up or do some have a HIAB to just lift up the shell, meaning I can take off the complete struts for spares and just leave a shell on bricks? Anyone want a 924 engine before I scrap it? Fibre glass roof - anyone know if someone makes replacements or is just hunt around? Spoiler or not? Classic part, but like the smooth look without as well. Any thoughts? Colours? Back to original Red or summat else? Until I sort the mechanicals it might just all end up red primer for time being!

Well started to empty the red'n'blue one: Seat is out the Scirocco so I could give my dad something to sit on and steer it with! Interior has such items as: Two centre consoles 4 Door grab handles Two carpet sets! It does have the roller parcel sheld as well which the other lacks, bonus!

Nice work sir! Should be able to make a good 'un from the two. Yours, being an earlier car wouldn't have had a rear spoiler as standard. Personally I think they look better with one, but thats just me. There are doubtless those that would disagree. Not sure the sunroof should be glassfibre TBH, but I'm no expert. Give Glen at Franklin Hill a call, 07736 351278, he will be able to put you right. PH Sportscars are quite good for spares as well 01332 799298. As for colour, I tend to try and stick with the original, but again thats just me. Makes the job easier as well as no interior paint to worry about. There is no better colour than Gaurds Red IMHO, but then I'm probably biased there! What state are your dashes in? Relatively crack free ones are like poor quality wobbly children's play pony droppings. And I am loving that Pascha interior! ;D Good luck with it dude and make sure you keep us up to date with it. BTW. I don't suppose you have a spare cassette holder/cubby hole amongst all those bits do you, the one that sits behind the main centre console? ;D

The go kart type one is a slightly dark red - almost a hint of brown, must dig out the paint code - and it's growing on me, plus very close to red primer as a stop gap! Might keep the spoiler less boot just in case. The dash in the car I'm keeping is quite cracked, the one in the scapper is much better, the previous bloke found a good nick one fitted it, did his back in and gave up! So I'll be taking out and storing in the loft until I can swap it as stuff like that is way down my list of to-do's!
Random question, the centre consoles out of the scrapper have carpet on the sides, and the one in the keeper doesn't and never has bu the look of it. Were they carpetted on later models?
The lift out sunroof is so cool - popped it yesterday and it's most of the roof, really retro! Will need to look at sorting the cracks but looking forward to when it's on the road in the summer of 200X.
Shall have a look for the cubby thing, not sure what I've got so far!

They did tend to be quite basic, so I wouldn't be surprised if didn't have them. If you really get stuck you can get a "dash cap" to go over the dash. Not the perfect solution, but they can look very effective with a little work. And the best bit is, Porsche say any 924 after '76 will happily run on unleaded. TBH I run mine on V-Power and it is happier, but 95 RON will do and you don't need octane boosters or lead replacements.

Tux - had a look any only have the one cubby / cassette thing, and it's a bit busted anyway! So will be after one myself in the fullness of time.
Glad about the unleaded thing, just wish the government had kept that rolling 25 years tax exemption going as that would save a few quid!
Stupid question, not had a car with positive earth before, am I going to need a special stereo (thinking ahead a bit I know)!
Found someone down the road from me selling the sunroof I need so should have sorted that, at the moment it's artfully duct taped up which I'm glad of given the 8 hours of solid rain last night!
How much do you know about taking them apart? I've ordered a Haynes manual which should arrive soon put was planning on taking lights, bumper, wings and front panel off this weekend. Any hints!?
Also can't get the seats to slide, any hints on that? Can't get to the bolts to take them out and service them so a bit stuck!
I've seen them dash caps on ebay, not cheap! Will make do with cracked for time being.

Cheers matey. Not to worry, they are a bit thin on the ground and thanks for checking. Good news on the sun roof. Yeah, the tax thing is a bit of a bummer, but Uncle Gordon isn't daft! Err, positive ground? Are you sure? News to me! I couldn't swear to it but I thought they were all negative earth, I know mine certainly is, but it is slightly later at 1985. The panels mostly bolt off, they are fairly self explanatory with the fixings fairly obvious. There is one bolt for the wings which is hidden in the pop up headlight apperture though and its a bit of a curse word to get at so watch out for that one. The lights in the bumpers are mostly held on with spire clips and self tappers if memory serves and the bumpers themselves have one bolt on either side that goes straight up into the hangers from underneath. Just have a look at the bottom edge of the bumper and you will see them. Its the same front and back. Front panel has a row of self tappers on the inside lip of the engine bay and TBH not sure what holds the front on as I have yet to take mine off. I would suspect the seats are just stiff/seized through damp/corrosion/years of cack and lack of use. I can only suggest giving them a dose of PlusGas/WD40 and judicious use of force. I'm not aware of any known problems with them. There should just be one 10mm headed bolt front and rear on each runner. When you do get them out, there may (or may not! its the luck of the draw!) be some spacers under the mountings. You can happily discard these and gain a little leg room if you need to. A lot of people have legroom issues with the 924, I know I do! Good luck matey, and don't forget your camera!!! ;D

Ta for advice, both wings off, suprising little rust underneath. You were right about the bolt in the headlight, hard to find and hard to get to!
My front panel seem to be welded on, so will try and repair the one I have to save hassle.
Taken off exhaust and found new fuel lines front to back that are coming off tomorrow.
Now moved on the dashboard, undone bolt in middle behind speaker and at both a-pillars, now it's free at the ends but seems tight in the middle, where else is it fixed? Haynes manual arrived but is less than useful on this.

Good news on the fuel lines, another area of dodginess on the 924. Not sure what year they started, but most of the 924s were galvanised, so major rust should never be a problem. Keep this in mind if you need to do any welding though as it gives off a poisonous vapour! Make sure you clean it up properly with a grinder etc first. Not sure what holds the dash in TBH, not had to have mine out yet, but I'll have a look when I get 5 minutes. I understand it is quite simple, so there shouldn't be much, if anything holding it in now.

It would seem there is just the one bolt in the middle to hold it, so it should now be free. Haynes seems to agree too. The centre console seems to do a fairly good job of holding things in place too, so it might be worth removing this if you haven't already. Failing that, start looking for "aftermarket" fixings!

They're definitely negative earth! - as is the LT35 van on which it's based As for galvanising - early examples were only part galvanised - bottom half only, so you can still get a bit of rot on the top half of the shell. Not that galvanising is any guarantee - even galvanised cars will eventually rust through, especially early examples of galvanised shells. To solve the cracked dash problem, I'd be very tempted to get some stretchy alcantara and impact glue - that'll not only make it look neat, but it'll also get rid of glare from the top of the dash.

i used to work on these in the early 90,s. nice cars but pray you don't ever have to change the heater unit, all the dash out and then some Taking the whole heater unit out the scrapper, hoping it'll be one of those "if you have a spare you'll never need it" talismans! Few random pics: The OK exhaust and new fuel lines. Need to get back box welded or replaced. The fairly crack free dash now in the loft, was bolted to the heater in two places, needed to lay on the broken glass and other floor cr&p to find them though! The pretty much rust free inner wing, not bad for 25 years old: The b7stard bolt for the wing, hidden under headlamp wiper rubber: The bent sill on both sides, needed to straighten out to get off, will need to do a careful job on the one I'm keeping: This weekend I plan to drop the engine out, and nick anything else off ready for it to go to the garage in the sky on Tuesday, to be made into some cr&ppy Hyundai I expect. Wonder if you can specify what your car can be made into, like with body organs? Oh and it is negative earth like you all said! Mentioned it to father in law who came to help work on it, and he politely pointed out the previous owner was a doughnut and had put the terminals on the wrong leads so it looked positive earth!

Had a good day today, chopped the front end off: Dropped the engine out: And stripped boot and door, dumped back down on the blocks: And wrapped up the dead body for collection: Hopefully going Tuesday, then I can start work on the keeper next weekend.

Done this so quick the DVLA haven't given me the log book yet, do I need it to scrap it or would the new keepers supplement and a signed note from scrap man do?
