Boring news update: serviced it, no issues I suppose. The oil filter is enormous mind. Bit of fiddling with the points has solved the spluttery idle from cold. Running really smooth now!
Fender mirrors have arrived and they look quality! Impressed. Going to fit them sometime I suppose.
That's it!

Now with added safe and comfortable drivings, changed the fuel filter. Amazing what £4.99 does to transform the car really! Minus all the fuel I spilled out of the old one. Oops.

As much as I love the (pretty horrid in a lovable way) standard wheel: I have got hold of this used Nardi which has come out of a Pajero: Now I just need the correct boss for it! Lovely stuff. Next week on CHARMANT SQUAD (in color): We optimistically wait and see if Daihatsu UK can actually source new rear clusters and the wing mount aerial, then sulk if they can because that means I have to drive to Morley and I hate driving to Morley. The week after on CHARMANT SQUAD (in color): "Oh God, it's that bloke who keeps ordering in obscure Daihatsu parts, he's come to collect some bits, please please please don't let him order anything else in" "Thanks for that, now can you get me one wing mirror from a 1967 Daihatsu P-5 race car" "ARRGGH"

I'm completely ignorant of great J cars like this. What would something like this cost you in the UK? Mmm indeed I love Hayashis, if I was importing I suppose I might as well go for Hayashis. HMMMMM.

I'm completely ignorant of great J cars like this. What would something like this cost you in the UK? That's a B110 Sunny, answer would be a minimum of £770 'cos that's what the very nice one currently eBay is up to right now, but I think it'll go higher. Good to hear the Charmant's getting a bit of TLC lavished on it Hirst. Isn't your Daihatsu dealer even vaguely interested that an old thing like this survives and is in enthusiastic hands? Shame.

My local Mitsubishi and Mazda dealers are growing to hate me!! Keep up the good work Hirst, you're doing the old girl proud

Good to hear the Charmant's getting a bit of TLC lavished on it Hirst. Isn't your Daihatsu dealer even vaguely interested that an old thing like this survives and is in enthusiastic hands? Shame. Probably will be interested in some way, asked me a few questions about the Mira and the Avanzato when I've ordered in parts for them. Haven't really talked to them about the Charmant yet but I have a feeling this one might baffle them a bit with its traditional navy blue suit wearing Japanese businessman looks. The Charmant has had odd response with people, I expected it to be pretty ignored but it actually gets a fair amount of attention. People either seem to like it from the start and say things like "they don't make em like this anymore" or they're initally unreceptive to it but warm to it when you explain the rear wheel drive, light weight etc. and see the potential. But you do seem to get the impression that you're causing the dealer a lot of bother! I imagine it involves looking at really dusty old microfiche and ringing head office etc. all to get some daft bit of trim like a parcel shelf. I think most of the problems are caused at the dealer side as they're not 100% up on what the correct parts are unless it's for a really obvious model so it can take them over a week just to get you a part number and price. I might beg Daihatsu UK to give me all the Charmant part numbers to save me bother. I'm trying my best with this car anyway, I've wanted one for ages!

I might beg Daihatsu UK to give me all the Charmant part numbers to save me bother. Keep your eye out for either an old parts book or set of fiches. Even if you haven't got a fiche reader (I picked mine up for £5 recently, think they're a bit out of fashion nowadays as most stuff is on CD or whatever) then your local library may well have a machine you can use. I used to do that, but suspect I was the only person needing to. Sniff round at local autojumbles/auctions - J-stuff (especially Daihatsu) is usually reasonably priced. I'll try to do this for you at my next local one (late Jan).

Hirst, courtesy of Baz I got this update on the blue one he's seen several times in Norwich.....
"Just to let You know, I happened across the Asda car-park Charmant again today....This time it contained it's owner, a woman her sixties I'd say....Turns out her late husband bought the car new, so it has considerable sentimental value to her and she's not currently contemplating getting rid!"
He did leave a number with her so hopefully when she does come to find a new home for it one day we may get a phone call.

Excellent news, to be fair that one is in lovely condition so it should last for years to come if the owner intends to keep driving it. Someone should get that one too, imagine that! A club with three Charmants!

Fantastic, Daihatsu UK no longer supply any of the parts I would like and couldn't care less by the sound of it. So at least I don't have to go to Morley. If you want barely any parts support, new or old car (apparently some people with 1997 Cuore Avanzatos have been told they can't have a new gearbox ordered in if they break), buy a Daihatsu today!
Now I get the fun of trying to get hold of them from Japan where there's probably even less still on the road and likely the same answer awaiting me. There's not a single worthwhile part for sale on Japan Auctions too (some old manuals and HT leads though).
Still I had a steak pie and that was pretty nice.

Fantastic, Daihatsu UK no longer supply any of the parts I would like and couldn't care less by the sound of it.......... That's bad. In that case isn't a bit hypocritical of them having that old Compagno? Why bother promoting how long they've been around if they couldn't care about keeping newer stuff going?

The funny thing is I did read about that Compagno and they said that they had to redesign the brake assembly as they no longer stocked the parts. Another dealer has got back to me and said that Daihatsu no longer stock any Charmant parts at all! Even service items by the sound of it.
Time to write to Daihatsu Japan?
