if it comes out looking like treacle its fooked. mine came out like this, and the joints were that bad that no matter how hard we tried to get them pushed in for the clearance, they wouldnt budge.so out came the angle grinder. that shifted the barsteward.new one went in a treat. what sort of shape is the self levelling system in? any odd behavior, leaks or strange psssssssss noises?

Bit of an update: Chassis rail is now plated and primed with antirust for now. Once I get back from my holiday (off to Stockholm next week) I will get back under there and take off all the old underseal and schultz (or similar) the chassis again. More for my peace of mind than anything else. While I'm under there I will order and fit a new front box. A slammed black estate draw enough attention on it's on with looks, let alone the fact that it burbles quite hoarsely when running. Also, not forgetting the main reason for being under the car, the diff will be inspected more closely and the cv housing with be removed and replaced along with a couple of boots. That should see me into the red easily enough..... Pics and updates to follow tony - oil was very runny, still had the consistencey of oil rather than treacle and it wasn't a bad colour either. The rear suspension has been disconnected so the rear leveller doesn't work.

Whole shaft is easy to change though,my old 280e used to munch the steel sleeves. Haynes manual will lie and tell you you have to split the propshaft and drop the whole diff and subframe off. Piffle. Jack car up,remove wheels, drop subframe down, undo diff hanger bolts and remove hanger, and undo trailing arm bolts (two at front),undo 10mm head bolt inside hub and remove. Drain diff, remove cover, locate circlip and remove. Wiggle trailing arm about and pull driveshaft out. Insert fresh driveshaft and follow steps. Pretty sure thats how it goes! Good luck.

Right. Bit of an update here. I've been ill, on holiday and then catching up with work but now, all is in sight. The plans so far... Go rat-tastic! This is what I'm thinking:
Satin Black Some red basic pin striping All chrome polished Wheels polished White band tyres Coupe style lights (cheers for the idea Russell!) Loose the rear arch trim (thanks again Russell!) A new Grill! AND....
I'm going to loose the tints... I think.... I'm not sure... won't be ratty with them... but then...

Yeah I agree keep it gloss and polish all the chrome up and what about losing the roof bars? How they attatched? You'd probably have to weld up holes I would imagine. Would look ace though.

O.k. then.. maybe gloss black with the roofbars gone (will definitely need welding up.. any good local bodyshops Keefy/Pog/Russell??) Still undecided on the tints though... New front box fitted today. I had to farm the work out so I feel like a bit of a cheat there I've got no space over the pits here at work and can't be arsed to do it in the rain/wind and on cold concrete. Then, some point this weekend I'm going to do a basic service and fit the new rocker cover gasket just to see the old engine through. I'll also be feeling particulary brave and ordering a drive shaft and associated odds. Never done one before but, thanks to Keefy and Dave (TonyCC) I have had some top advice and should have it done quick enough. Tints or not... tints or not.... tints or not....

Privacy Glass........ Idiot glass ! Take th etints off. Looks cool on your car, but I am instantly curse word off on the road when I cannot see through a car with "Privacy glass" at an intersection, or when you cannot see whats going on inside. PS: Still love your car.

O.k. then.. maybe gloss black with the roofbars gone (will definitely need welding up.. any good local bodyshops Keefy/Pog/Russell??) What needs welding? Tony Ransome at Henlow is pretty nifty for that. Strange bloke, but cheap and good at what he does. PM me for his number.
