There goes the neighbourhood Anyone who actually knows me, knows that I'm into the retro/hot rod thing more than any other car clique. So, after spotting this on ebay and severeal different inspections by various folk... I've got this gothic estate type bad ass monkey shafting mofo of a Merc.. and a MASSIVE thanks to pogweasel for recognising the car and enabling me to do some detective work on her previous owners Currently a 2ltr Auto but it's not as bad as I thought it would be! She's a little rough around the edges (she's 4yrs from being as old as me lol) and needs some tinkering but she's so unique and individual it's cool ;D

Top grammar tips! Bought = purchased. Brought = relocated Lose = misplace/opposite of win. Loose = your mum

Thanks for the comments guys. Expect her to stay on here for a very long time. She's a long term WIP but I really do need to sort the drivers seat first. It's springs have sprung and having one forced into my butt cheek isn't what I call a pleasurable driving experience

And the wip starts earlier than expected! Day 4 of Ownership - Sunday 27th August at 9.55pm on the A1. Came off the slip road on to the A1 Southbound at Peterborough to be greeted by an ever increasingly loud clattering noise coming from the drivers side rear wheel. Get home eventually on the back of a recovery truck at 12.20am... Welcome to retro ownership.

There is a great look black 200T estate slammed on shiny BBS split rims,.. sadly I've never got a picture handy,. someone usually pops up with it when I comment on it though Should provide some inspiration.

thats a cool w123 dude! fill the boot with hydraulics...you know you want to lol, clattering will be driveshaft, ive gone through 2 sets so far due to abusing my juiced 123! usually if you let the shafts cool down a few minutes you can get where youre going lol

usually if you let the shafts cool down a few minutes you can get where youre going lol i did a 1300 mile round trip in my old 200t with a bust cv joint, and it would have still kept on going. ive been through 3 in a year on my 230 since i dropped it 5 inches. easy enough to change, but a bit messy when you have to start poking around in the diff for the circlip though.

Hmmm interesting find when you have a pit to use...
Blown front box... that would explain the exhaust smell and the green pixies.. Chassis rail near bulkhead badly corroded.. must weld in a thick plate asap... Rear axle.... o/s/r inner driveshaft boot perished, cv housing corroded/falling apart and serious amounts of play (side to side) on both drive shafts. Still unable to determine loud banging noise as I can't get it to replicate it...
PLUS... are the inner driveshaft housings fed oil from the diff? I thought they were generally packed with grease? :S

banging noise is defo a knackered cv joint, try as hard as you can, you'll never make it do it by hand. cut the boot off and have a look at the missing ball bearings. yes they are packed with grease, not fed from the diff. the side to side play you mention, shouldnt really be a problem, but with the cv joint being trashed will accentuate the movement. this play helps you when it comes to removing the driveshafts. i hope you get all of the probs sorted soon, and when you do, may i suggest binning the 2 litre in favour of a 2.3. miles better, and you'll use less fuel.

Hmm interesting... when we prised away the inner boot (diff side of the d/shaft) oil began to leak out Oh yeah and on the engine front.. my step-dad actually offered me his 2.3 engine.. rebuilt by MB less than 10k ago... no price was discussed ;D
