Right, couple of months on and I haven't driven it that much, had some small problems and a lack of space in the barn to fix it. Last week I fixed it and to celebrate that it worked again, I took it to Zandvoort for a trackday. Dutch trackdays work a little different then UK ones, our system is more like a go-karting system, pay 25 euro's, drive for 20 minutes. Did 2 heats in the end, had a LOT of fun and did a reasonable laptime of 2.22, which isn't half bad and I was very pleased with that. It behaved very good, better then I expected. Swapped to some Ronal Kleeblatt wheels with worn Yokohama A048R tires. So proud of the little thing now, I finally used it in anger and it felt GREAT

thanks for the comment there are no updates, because I haven't done anything to the car other then driving the hell out of it and breaking it (well, I can blame hairnet for that, just after he drove it, it broke down! ). Right now it sits like this: Engine out to fix some oil leaks, finally fix the clutch line bodge I did at RRG11 and fix the broken brake pipe which stopped me driving the car in the first time.

Since wednesday the engine is back in the hole, i need to finish this, because i need the car to go to Denmark in a few weeks. Went quite smooth, so that's great! The reason i had the engine out was this: Brake pipe vs. gearbox fight, in the end the gearbox won and i had no brakes... ooops Now some jobs left, like making longer studs for the diff, so it'll stop leaking like a sieve and reconnecting everything. I need this up and running and MoT'd around the 14th of July to be able to give it a quick shake down before i set off on a week trip to Denmark.

Going through the last pages of this topic i saw a trend. Breaking it Fixing it Trackdaying it Breaking it.. etc. etc. Since i had just fixed it, i needed to go on the track, and so i did yesterday A group of friends gathered at the paddock of Zandvoort (Hairnet flew over as well) to test their old cars at the track: I took it out on track: And i broke it Bottom radiator hose chafed through on the alternator, so after 1 heat of 20 minutes ragging the Corolla round the track, the day was over for me. Bodged it with loads of ducttape and zipties to bring me home. So now i'm fixing it, to get it out on track again! Kinda boring vid Hairnet made with his cam. It's much more intense from the live seats! It was a busy day, and because of my rollcage, i had to go in the Sport class, which means i was surrounded by proper (quick) race cars and had to get out of the way quite often. Had loads of fun though, that's what counts. Next time i'll do more then 20minutes of driving!

To keep the momentum going, i had fixed the last problem with the coolant hose. Took it to a rally.. and.... I broke it... Quite spectaculair this time. Last year i had a little problem when i hadn't noticed that all the oil in the rear axle had leaked out, after refilling it, it was fine, all be it a bit noisy. This stayed like this for a whole year, and then i entered a Rally with berendd in Belgium. During the day, it got louder and louder, so what do you do with an allready dying diff.. Take it to the timed trial course, ofcourse! After 1/2 a lap of the 2 i was supposed to do, there was a bang, and allthough i didn't loose drive, it didn't sound happy at all. Big yellow taxi home and today i investigated: That's half of the teeth on the pinion wheel missing, no wonder it was so loud and banging! I drove it about a kilometer away from the track, before i called in the recovevery, surprised it managed that!

Impressed by the fact your breakages are getting well more impressive...... Evolution not revolution - needs a stronger diff :-)

A reply by markbognor in an other topic, reminded me i didn't put up my latest breakage here.. I didn't even manage to fix the previous one this time round! I needed to test if the temporary diff i put in the car was working, so i needed to start the engine. Starter engaged and heard a terrifying noise from the engine, and i couldn't turn it by hand. When i removed the head, my fears appeared to be true, a bolt from the carbs managed to rattle itsself loose and found it's way to cil no 2 Result: 2 bent valves, big scores in the headchamber and a piston with craters I've got a spare engine which is locked solid, with some decent pistons in, need to dig it out from our 'enginedepartment' (read: corner in the workshop where all the old-oily metal is stored ) and try to get a decent piston out of it as well as 2 valves. Luckily it looks like the block itsself has survived, as it only happend when trying to start the engine. Really need to get on to it, because the car is in the barn for almost a year allready. Allthough this is a perfect good time to fit my uprated oil pump, which has only been in the making for 5 years!

So, in the previous update i told about the, quite spectaculair, new ways i'd found to break my car! Nearly a year on, and nothing really happened. I lost interest in the car, it stood in the barn, looking dusty and very sorry for itsself. Then the event season of 2016 rolled in, and i nearly bought another classic, as i really mis driving in old cars. Instead of spending money on a new car, why not fix the old car, i thought.. So 2 weeks ago i boshed in the spare engine, which should be the new block donor for my new engine, in the car, just as a stop gap engine to get me on the road again and tried to get a dutch MoT on it. I really boshed it in, as i didn't even change the oil which was still in the engine, after a couple of goes, it fired up and immediatly ran great. Passed the test first time as well, how that happened i'll never know.... i must've done something right then! ;D 3 days after i used it in a 300km roundtrip to another event from our Dutch Toyota club, as a shake down run/test run to see what needs improving Also the first run on my newly, fresh from Japan arrived wheels. They look great, but are in a terrible state, not shure if i can refurb them, or just going to use them as track wheels. Next months i'm going to try and iron out the little niggles and then take it to RRG again this year One of them is the carb heating system, as it drives like a pig now in low-ish temps. But it runs!

Really glad you got this little Gladiator back out on the road.
Funny that, I have driven company cars the last 25 years, but the best times are with a retro.
They do really rock !!

They really do! I get so much more enjoyment out of this car, running like a pig, requiring all the 3 pedals to keep it running the first 5 minutes then i do with my 'modern' 1987 Starlet (it has a brake booster and a 3 speed heater!!! )

Finally made a choice about the future of the Corolla! Despite buying/gathering all the parts needed for a rebuild of the engine i had in the car, i won't be rebuilding it anymore. I found my mates old car for sale for a price i couldn't say no to! 4A-GE it is then! After the show season the car goes in for it's transformation. More power, more valves, more/better noise and less weight!

So.... this saturday i started working on the donorcar, removing it's engine. Pretty sad, this was my mates car back in 2006-2012ish, it's been through a couple of phases, taught us a lot about working on cars, and now i'm taking it apart. Sad end, BUT it's the new heart for my car, so it's spirit kinda lives on. With me taking apart this car, i've had a hand in parting 3 out of 6 original Celica GTS sold in the Netherlands... ooops Started on cleaning it a bit, 300.000km of abuse leave behind some trails, also started on refreshing the valvecovers, as they where not really in great condition anymore. Need to buy some paint for the letters, but that's for another time.
